"We're creating a world of our own devising, but we take cues from the comics," director Webb Webb told MTV News in a recent interview. "In terms of the CIA-secret-agent thing, we're not really going down that road in particular/ Not in this movie."

"There is a lot of stuff to explore and design, and that was part of the fun in creating this universe in a new and different way. There's a relationship with Oscorp that's deeper and more interesting. There's a lot to explore with Peter Parker as a character that I think is really fascinating. The trickster component and punk-rock instinct he has I'm really excited to get out there."

"We had many discussions about how to create a universe that could sustain over a few films."

"There are also those moments that are teased,"
added producer Matthew Tolmach. "But there are emotional questions to be resolved within Peter and within other characters in the movie. I think that's also what's going to make for subsequent movies."

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: July 3rd, 2012.

sounds promising, green goblin for the sequel but this time don't make him look like a power ranger.

I could give a holy hell about Peter's parents. And for that matter some big mystery in the Parker's past. That is not what Spidey is about and it cheapens his character.

@itbegins2005

You are only thinking of the stereotypical punk rock. Today, a sterotypical nerd too looks perfectly normal. He means that when Peter dons the costume as Spidey, he has that attitude that is somewhat punk-rock-ish. Rebellious, annoying to the villain, etc.

I understand that Peter's parents have played a role in the comics, and I have always disliked that as well.

What I meant was, Spidey is a normal kid. There's no destiny, no mystery, no conspiracy, just a kid who gets thrown into something.

Ben and May are for all intents and purposes his parents.

You can expand on those kinds of things in the comics, because the comics have different rules to storytelling. For a movie, I think a plot concerning Peter's parents is useless.

Sounds like the same route that was taken with X-Men First Class. Take some of the characters from the comics and create their own story. I don't want overly emotional Parker. I want the smart-ass Parker, villains and action.
ScionStorm
ScionStorm - 8/9/2011, 3:41 PM
I'm sure all his general villains in the early days thought he was a punk with the kind of mocking jokes he webbed at them.

You might as well not have killed his parents in the first place if your never going to touch the topic.

@Ranger- He described the character as trickster and punk-rock. Does that not translate in anyway way, even vaguely to "smart-ass"?

Why does Hollyweird feels the need to try and improve this characters? "new relationship with Oscarp that's deeper and more interesting", "Parker's... punk-rock instinct"???????

if you don't like the character enough to respect it's origins. Go do another movie...

Yes lets keep judging movies before they are even in the same summer they are released......(Makes fart noise with mouth).....Dude spidey is a punk to adults. Thats just what he is! The guy maybe didn't describe it the right way But from a HUGE spiderman fan trust me sounds like this guy is about to do for spiderman what Marvel studios did for Iron Man........Bring the character right out of the comics and change the origins accordingly that fits in modern times

I don't understand the majority of comic book fans, seeing a comic translated into a movie is just like getting a new artist and writer on a series, they have the liberty to tweak what they want in order to get their story across.

[frick] yes. So much of this movie has been (updated) ASM, which is great, except I call BS (and so would most moviegoers). It seems they are going the USM route with the parents, scientists killed because they piss off powerful people (Norman Osbourne).

I'm not really feeling it with this movie. I hate the costume, hate several of the casting choices and Spidey is supposed to be funny! not some emo-teenager who mopes around all the time. Jay Baruchel shoulda been Spider-Man.

@JidiRob- I don't know what you mean. May and Ben are his Aunt and Uncle. Tough. They have never been represented as his actual parents. Nor should they be. It is entirely natural for Peter's parents to matter to him. And if they matter to him, that should be all the reason needed to explore the topic.
ScionStorm
ScionStorm - 8/9/2011, 4:29 PM
@RunDTC- now tricktster and punk-rock translate to moping emo-teenager?
rbfn04
rbfn04 - 8/9/2011, 4:30 PM
@ScionStorm i think what @JidiRob meant was, may and Ben always raised him from a small kid. His biological weren't around, hence, he thinks of them as his de facto parents...
