MORBIUS Limps Past $150 Million Worldwide - Has A Stake Been Driven Through The Marvel Franchise's Heart?

While Morbius has finally hit another significant benchmark at the worldwide box office, it's likely too little, too late for the Living Vampire's big screen debut. Find more details after the jump...

The Bad Guys topped the box office this weekend (you can read our review by clicking here), and with the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Northman, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent vying for the attention of moviegoers, Morbius has continued to slip down the charts.

Sony Pictures' Marvel Comics adaptation is on track to earn $2.25 million (via Forbes) this weekend, taking its domestic total to $69 million. Globally, Morbius has earned $156 million, a disappointing result even for a movie that only cost $75 million to produce (not including marketing costs).

Will we get a sequel? It's hard to imagine the studio committing to one. After all, convincing moviegoers to return for a second round is always a challenge, never mind when it's a follow-up to a movie that's received widespread negative reviews from fans and critics alike since being released. We could see the Living Vampire in another Sony movie, though, likely as a supporting character

When we interviewed Jared Leto earlier this year, we asked if he'd be interested in donning Morbius' comic-accurate costume down the line. "We talked about it, and decided for the first film it probably wasn’t gonna happen. There are some pretty great examples in the early comics and ideas of where we could go in the future if we suited up. That could be a lot of fun actually."

Did you decide to watch Morbius on the big screen?

Let this horror show of a franchise die and stop dragging the MCU into this sh*t.

@dragon316 - correct! Yet somehow nothing stops people from running to cinemas to watch the MCU movies..

Even Thor, which is one of the character you cant stop whining about being "destroyed" by Marvel, is gearing up to be another smashing hit for Marvel.

It really sucks for you that you cant find joy in these movies and keel trying to spit venom on them.
But to be fair... nobody here actually cares what the dragon has to say

@Razorface1 - out of curiosity which marvel movies do you consider to be bad? For me, the closest would be IM3 or Thor2. Not great but still not bad movies though.

@BigPhilbowski - Eternals is the only one I haven't seen thrice. I almost walked out of the theater and I'm an MCU obsessor.

@AmazingFILMporg - "There are some pretty great examples in the early comics and ideas," we just chose not to use any of them in this film.

At the very least, it is less of a commercial failure than Fantastic Beasts 3 whose box-office numbers might not even cover its own production costs (200 millions, not including marketing costs).

@Amuro - And less of a failure than Fan4stic too, as that one cost 120M (200M with Marketing) and only made 167M

They better not try to use Madame web to connect this schlock to the MCU or Spider verse.

That $75M budget is absolute BS, this movie was A LOT more expensive, so making $150M is a bomb. A big one.
We also keep getting more and more confirmation that movies now are making over 70% of their final BO numbers on their first weekend, after that, massive 60% drops each week, aside from the movie's quality.

Anyway, I wonder what will happen with MoM, a lot of people are pointing out at Marevl maybe not being the juggernaut it once was, especially without China (and in MoM case, pretty much half the Middle East), Black Widow, Shang Chi, and The Eternals underperformed, and now Morbius, and general audiences dont know the difference between MCU, FMU, or SMU, is all "Marvel".
And before the obligatory "NWH, though", that was a very especific case, with a very specific character, in a very especific event, we are talking about a character so popular that made Venom 2 the biggest Marvel hit of the pandemic era just behind, well, NWH.

Dr Strange 2 will obviously make money, a lot of money, but will it make "Marvel money"? I think is the first real test for the MCU in the pandemic era, and probably the whole industry is watching, because if Marvel cant pull $1B anymore, maybe is time to start making cheaper movies, and movies that actually have something to say and are more than just lazy fanservice and brand recognition, because general audiences seem to have grew tired of that.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Shang-Chi underperformed so badly it led to more studios pushing for theatrical exclusivity and less delays and has a sequel already in the works.

@WakandanQueen - $430M WW on a $250M budget.

@WakandanQueen - By the way, Shang-Chi was the number 2 movie in the US in 2021 (only behind No Way Home) and made over 400 million WW (without China) in a time where a lot of theaters were closed because of Covid. What a failure!!!!!

@TheHumanSpider2 -

Shang chi was a huge hit. It was number 2 in the US in 2021.💁

And that was when the pandemic was still going on with alot of restrictions.

Are you high?🥲

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/24/2022, 2:24 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - $430M on a $250M is not a hit, especially as part of a franchise that used to make $1B on its sleep.

@TheHumanSpider2 - you just don't get it do you? Shang Chi was during the pandemic. Not Marvel's fault that theaters were closed and not everyone was going out to movies. They will be fine.
