A few years ago, Marvel's characters were split into three different camps on screen. Marvel Studios held the rights to The Avengers and various associated heroes and villains, the Fantastic Four and X-Men were under the purview of 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures held the rights to Spider-Man.
Now, though, the lines are blurred. Marvel Studios and Sony now share Spidey (but not his rogues gallery and supporting cast, unfortunately), while the Disney/Fox merger now means the MCU has full control over all but the wall-crawler.
The Direct recently got to take a look at new book, With Great Power, and it reportedly confirms that there are two characters who can be used by both movie studios. Those are Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman.
This makes sense because The Kingpin first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #50 but is primarily a Daredevil villain. Spider-Woman, meanwhile, has obvious ties to Peter Parker, but is actually more closely associated with The Avengers rather than the webbed wonder.
Fisk's role in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse now makes more sense, and we're assuming this means we can look forward to Jessica showing up in the MCU after her appearance in next year's animated sequel, Across the Spider-Verse. There have been rumblings about Sony doing something with the character, though we have to believe Marvel Studios would like to use her too.
However, even if they do, we wouldn't be shocked if her "Spider-Woman" persona is off-limits to the MCU. That might require the two sides to come to a deal of some sort, something we're sure isn't outside the realm of possibility presuming they continue sharing Spider-Man.
As for The Kingpin, he's set to take centre stage in Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, and is already rumoured to be the big bad in Spider-Man 4.
What do you hope the future holds in store for these two characters?
