In the comics, Gwen preceded Mary Jane as Peter Parker's love interest, beginning in high school. Peter's rival for Gwen's affections was football captain Flash Thompson. Her father was a police captain who alternately worked with or clashed with Spidey. In a classic story, the Green Goblin threw her off a bridge and Spider-Man was unable to save her life.
Director Sam Raimi started filming last month.
