Just saw the Amazing Spider-man... here's my ten cents: WARNING Minor Spoilers below
Here's what I wrote down in my notes right after I saw the movie. What's good or better than previous films:
1. The actors Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are much better actors as Spider-man and his love interest. Tobey Maguire does a terrible job crying in Spider-Man 3 and I couldn't help but laugh. Here at the death scene at end of movie, Andrews tears put a lump in my throat. While we all probably loved the upside down kiss in the rain in Spiderman 1,the passion and chemistry between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are believable.. No wonder they became a real couple.
2. Web slinging more real and fun and iconic.
3. The Lizard in half man half Lizard state where you can see the actor Rhys Ifans was great.
4. Dennis Leary as captain Stacy and Sally Struthers as Aunt May were fantastic.
5. While the suit looked pretty crappy before the film came out in behind the scenes stills, it's color and use in movement actually was ok.. The first suit was cooler but this one was ok too...actually my favorite suit is from spiderman turn off the dark broadway play.. Google that.
What's not so good about the film:
1. The plot line reminded me of something that has been done a million times.. I think in a few of the old batman films.. Mad scientist or crazy villain unleashes something terrible over city. Good guy can't see girlfriend at daddy's funeral reminds me of the daredevil Electra scene in daredevil movie.
2. Some parts still appeared too polished and animated even when director said he intended more gritty realistic feel.. It couldn't make up its mind whether it was polished unrealistic Hollywood blockbuster or 500 days of summer superhero term angst flick.
3. I didn't like the sequence much related to Uncle Bens death.. Original was a little better.
4. The lizard in full cgi mode was artificial and sucked and his cheesy smile reminded me of the gorn from star trek or those lizard minster dudes from the 70s tv show land of the lost. What was Webb the director thinking?? I'm sure people on his team would have seen the similarities.. The mouth ESP was disconcerting and almost funny.
Here's my thoughts today, after a day of thinking about my film experience and my opinion especially after re reviewing the old clips and trailers showing stuff that wasn't in the final film:
A message to the producers and corporate big wigs who mercilessly hacked and cut the Amazing Spiderman so it had no coherence....you brag how great it was going to be and how profound the ending would be, then you cut out all the footage that ties the story together regarding Peter Parker's parents etc...take The Dark Knight Rises as inspiration you don't need to do a hack job, you CAN create a commercial success with great plot, drama etc...and be incredibly successful, but no, you took the easy way out, you losers!
