Suicide Squad has come under fire for the way Harley Quinn was portrayed in the film, particularly in regards to her relationship with the Joker. Widely perceived as an abusive back and forth by fans, there was a lot of unhappiness surrounding the decision to have Harley reunite with the Clown Prince of Crime in the closing few minutes.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was dedicated to undoing that, but director David Ayer has once again used Twitter to clarify a few things about his "Ayer Cut."

Indicating that Harley once had a greater level of consent in this relationship, Ayer would go on to explain that "Harley chose toxicity until she didn't." He also used the classic Mad Love storyline as a hint of what fans were originally in store for during the filmmaker's original cut of the film.

As of now, there's still no sign that the Suicide Squad "Ayer Cut" will be released on HBO Max.

People really should stop asking Ayer about Suicide Squad

I want to apologize to Snyder. Ayer is a billion times more annoying and he's just getting started.

@WakandanQueen - I mean at least Snyder has some class. This guy seems like an ass

Huh. I thought his Joker being the most irritating character in decades was to blame. Not to mention how [frick]ing bad the acting was. Did they not screen test Leto? Just because he won an oscar? Obviously doesn’t make him a great actor because DAMN. I believed his Leto was insane or dangerous as much as I believe Ayer is a great director.

@connorblaze - also his trans character just reminded me of Walter Goggins character in Sons of Anarchy, who did it much better, though similar. Both expressed a certain sadness well though.

The [frick]? Did he just reduce Joker's abuse of Harley to BDSM??

@Necropolitan - There is no hope. David should move on.

.....

So I suppose his inspiration was from Mad Love?? The Animated Series? The comics? Cause I don't recall there being safe words.......or Dominant/Submissive type shit.

Next thing you know, that "Cut footage" is gonna show her addressing Leto as "Daddy".

Foh.

Harley chose toxicity until she didn’t.

At what point in the movie did she until she didn't choose Joker?

@Reeds2Much - In the Ayer Cut, apparently towards the end, when Harley elects to stay with the Squad, instead of run off with Joker.

You know this is probably his way of acting out similar to Leto.

Leto didn't want Phoenix's JOKER coming out.
Now Ayer sees Gunn's The Suicide Squad coming out, and he is saltier than Mickey D fries, because his film was trash and is probably going to get outdone too by Gunn's.

And me personally, if I was a director and my "VISION" of a story I wanted to tell was being cut and changed by production execs, I would have just walked away.

Its not that difficult if you feel so strongly about your convictions. I see it as, he allowed the movie to get cut, got his paycheck, and now wants to bitch about how he didn't get to show off HIS movie.
Come on man!
If you valued your work as bad as you say and think you would have BLOWN US AWAY with your fake BDSM BS, you would have walked away instead of taking the check.

Say what you want about Zack Snyder's Justice League.
I strongly believe it won't make any difference in terms of overall perception by comic book fans.
HOWEVER, due to his circumstances of WHY he had to leave the production and filming in the hands of Whedon, is definitely cause for why he should have the opportunity to show his cut.

Ayer is just a whiny, real-life version of South Park's John Edwards who constantly begs people to see that he has something to contribute to society, when in reality......well you know where I am going with this.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Yeah, that's what makes it weird. Both Snyder & Ayer should've been able to pickup on the hints earlier on, that WB didn't agree with what they were creating. You gotta be able to read people, so that they won't stab in the back, when you're basically into post-production. I think they both just had to learn that lesson the hard way. But unfortunately fans had to kinda suffer through it with them.😂

I think David Ayer broke the ENTIRE movie.

In summary, Ayer doesn't understand these characters at all.

With DC's movie division touting itself as a director-focused studio nowadays (especially considering the success of Joker), Ayer calling the cut "complete," and the immense excitement of the Snyder cut -- odds are, the Ayer cut going to happen. The good news is that none of you guys have to watch it when it does.
