SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Says His Director's Cut Of 2016 Movie "Will Change The Course Of History"

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has shared his support for James Gunn and his DCU plans, all while hyping up the original cut of Suicide Squad which he insists "will change the course of History."

2023 will mark the end of the DCEU, but one of its first noteworthy critical flops - 2016's Suicide Squad - simply will not die.

Despite not boasting a fanbase quite as passionate as those who demanded Warner Bros. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut of Justice League, there are plenty of people who would love to see the studio #ReleaseTheAyerCut.

Worried about the response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it's no secret Warner Bros. butchered filmmaker David Ayer's vision. A series of catchy songs were inserted, the ending was completely changed, and a trailer editing company were among those who changed Suicide Squad's look and feel. The filmmaker even had to contend with losing Steppenwolf during pre-production.

Ayer continues to spread the word about his version of Suicide Squad on social media and has all but confirmed that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has promised he'll eventually help him #ReleaseTheAyerCut.

Now, the director has taken to Twitter/X to once again share his support for Gunn's DCU and asked fans attacking the Superman: Legacy helmer to calm down. He later followed that up with a post tagged with #ReleaseTheAyerCut suggesting his Suicide Squad movie "will change the course of History."

At this stage, it's hard to say how releasing the movie in its original form would benefit anyone. There's no chance it will be incorporated into the new DCU's continuity and, while it could be placed under the "Elseworlds" banner, it feels like a lot of money will need to be spent for minimal returns.

In fairness, the movie did earn $727 million at the worldwide box office, but if The Suicide Squad's commercial performance proved anything, it's that people aren't overly interested in Task Force X (that admittedly had to contend with a day-and-date release on Max, a movie which killed its chances of box office success).

What do you think? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Feloni - “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways,” he said. “In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”

@bobevanz - That’s great for Filoni.

John Woo has no room to talk.

@philinterrupted - yes he does, you're a clown for thinking otherwise. I bet you like John Wick, never would have happened without Woo making the best action movies

@bobevanz - I Filoni I trust. He might lean into fan service a bit too much at times, but I'm willing to cut him some slack as he is an obvious fan himself too. In the sequels it just felt forced.

Also, ain't nobody stopping you from writing articles. I say go for it

@bobevanz - John woo has made some good action movies. Yes, all bow down to Hard Boiled. He’s also made some shit. He made the only bad Mission Impossible, Broken Arrow, Paycheck. Same with Marvel. They’ve made some legitimate great movies and some also some shit. It’s the pot calling the kettle black.

You people and your high horses.

Why do you have to be such an kunt all the time?

Don’t let his doves hit your ass on the way out.

@bobevanz - I struggle to name a single John Woo movie that's a genuily classic and not just a "fun straightforward action movie"

@Goldboink - true. Think Filoni is able to find the balance between all of that really well

We already know what his cut was from discussions at the time.

We are introduced to Harley as she is doing her patient stuff at Arkham, introducing us to Joker. She ends up psycho analyzing him a while until he convinces her to supply weapons to his goons. He gets free, she ends up chasing him down and proving she's crazy enough to be with him.

Joker tries to ditch Harley and then ends up saving her from the vat of chemicals. Joker and Harley team-up to do the chaos around town resulting in Batman chasing them down. Joker ditches Harley after the car crashes in the river and Harley is arrested. Then most the movie plays out the same, Harley and company are recruited and end up being sent on the mission while Joker is trying to get her.

Then the Helicopter scene happens, Joker gets Harley but at this point Harley because of conversations with the 'Squad' is starting to realize Joker does not love her. Instead he just wants to own her, which is why every time he ditches her he regrets it after. He wants the power/control from owning her.

The helicopter gets hit and Harley falls out, Joker is presumed dead for a while. Harley gets depressed and we have the bar scene. During the final battle Harley ends up being confronted by the 'what if' dream of her and Joker, however she's shown resisting the dream saying he'd never do that for her.

After the final battle, rather than being confronted by Amanda Waller immediately the Squad believe they are free and end up leaving through a tunnel system. They ends up being confronted by Joker, whose now half burned due to the crash. Harley with the support of the team ends up breaking up with Joker.

Joker ends up trying to taunt Harley for this and eventually ends up trying to kill her, however Deadshot shoots him in the leg with a bullet he's been saving for Batman the entire film. Joker uses a grenade he had on him and blows up the tunnel, presumably surviving to return in another film.

With the tunnel blocked, the Squad are rounded up by law enforcement and given the rewards by Amanda Waller. The film ends with Harley happy in prison - now free from the Jokers influence.

In the movie as soon as the helicopter is hit he checks to see what is beneath and he pushes her out so she lands on the rooftop before falling over and just kinda deciding to stay in the helicopter and shout rather than jump with her.

In the Ayer cut when the helicopter is hit Harley was just going to fall out, landing on the roof by chance. Joker meanwhile would have fallen backwards not seeing where Harley fell to, shouts at the presumed loss of Harley and then is consumed by the fire/explosion as the Helicopter crashes.

It's a minor difference but it's more tragic that way in that both think the other is dead so when we get to the reunion later it adds another layer to showing that Joker does not actually love Harley, as he does not care that she's back, just that she's with the 'squad' rather than him.

The idea of the Ayer cut was that it demonstrates the toxic nature of the relationship more, Joker's actions are entirely to manipulate or control Harley rather than saving her or freeing her to be with him as the other version implies. The final cut of Suicide Squad treated it more as a twisted romance and a weird 'happy ending' of sorts when Joker frees her at the end.
