The new trailer for The Suicide Squad is now officially online following this afternoon's leak (to be fair, what did Warner Bros. expect?), and director James Gunn has now taken to Twitter to address one of the most talked-about moments.
Right after the trailer gets underway, we hear Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) reveal that Bloodsport (Idris Elba) is actually in prison for shooting Superman with a Kryptonite bullet. While the Man of Steel survived, he did end up in the ICU, so the attack clearly left him in a pretty bad way.
When a fan asked Gunn if Supes recovered from the encounter, he responded by (jokingly) suggesting that he might now be missing his spleen.
While there is precedent for this in the comic books, the notion that Superman was critically wounded in this manner doesn't seem to have gone over particularly well with certain fans. We have no idea why, exactly, but some seem to have taken it as further slight against Henry Cavill (yes, really), who is not expected to reprise the role in the DCEU.
Gunn also had some fun with the cast members who "leaked" the trailer early.
We recently found out that the movie was officially rated R for "strong violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual references, drug use and brief graphic nudity."
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere on HBO Max and in theaters on August 6.
