James Gunn is only bringing back a handful of actors from
Suicide Squad for
The Suicide Squad and among them is Joel Kinnaman. He played Colonel Rick Flag in the first movie and was definitely a character comic book fans wanted to see more of. Now, he's shed some light on working on the sequel and it definitely sounds like the film will take Task Force X in a vastly different direction.
"He’s an incredible guy," the actor said in an interview with
Variety, referring to Gunn.
"He’s written a fantastic script. It’s so funny, [and] I feel like I’m shooting my first comedy. There are a lot of really funny people there. It’s like a learning experience. I’m around a lot of incredible funny people."
Gunn taking the franchise in a comedic direction is hardly a surprise but it was to be expected and could be a smart move on Warner Bros.' part, especially after the mixed reaction to David Ayer's darker take on the characters. Someone who won't return is Jared Leto's Joker and it really doesn't appear as if that's something Kinnaman is losing any sleep over.
"No. Who?" he responded when asked if he feels like he's "cheating" on Leto. "Joaquin [Phoenix] just crushed. I mean, wow. He's incredible. He's such an actor. It's surprising to see something have that kind of performance that has a DC wraparound because it's a real art film."
"I have a sister who's a schizophrenic and I've drawn on some of her behavioral things in some of the things I've done earlier and I was really struck by how accurate his performance was," Kinnaman continued. "I think he's really one of the best of all time."
We've heard that Leto's bizarre actions on the set of Suicide Squad didn't make him any friends and considering how close the cast ended up growing, it's no wonder they won't miss the guy who reportedly sent them a pig's head, condoms, and bullets.
