When it was first announced that Idris Elba would be joining the cast of The Suicide Squad, there was a lot of speculation (to be fair, not even the trades seemed to be sure one way or the other) that the Avengers: Infinity War actor would be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot. It later came to light that he was actually playing Bloodsport, but the similarities between both characters were undeniable, and many believe the original idea must have been for Elba to step into the Deadshot role.
Elba and director James Gunn have always maintained that there was never any discussion about recasting Floyd Lawton in case Smith ever decided to return to the franchise, but this Tweet from Warner Bros. UK - which has, believe it or not, yet to be deleted - is certain to reignite the debate.
Gunn recently debunked a rumor that a Bloodsport spinoff was in the works, but added that there is a "possibility of seeing more Bloodsport in the near future."
The Suicide Squad underperformed at the box office, but it is currently the most-watched DC Comics movie on HBO Max, and if the upcoming Peacemaker show proves to be a hit, there's every chance WB will decide to revisit some of the other members of Task Force X down the line. Plus, Elba has expressed interest in exploring his character's history with Superman.
