The script for the next Superman film has been written, and there is talk that Jonathan Nolan is on top of a list to direct it. But who is playing Superman is the question that has not been answered yet.

During a round-table interview for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Brandon Routh, the actor who played the Man of Steel in Superman Returns, said that he has not yet heard anything about the Christopher Nolan-David Goyer written reboot, but would love to play the character again.

“I certainly would love to play Superman again. As much as I say I’m working to shake that off or shake it up, I certainly don’t want to extinguish or get rid of it because it was a great honor and I would love to be able to return as that character.”

When told about an internet groundswell supporting his return, Routh said that he wants it to “turn into a tsunami,” adding “I think the brothers Nolan are both very talented and so that makes it a different kind of film that would be than Bryan’s vision, which I think was a very nice film that I’m very proud of."

I wouldn't mind if he came back. He played a good Superman.

the thing that sucked about the movie was not his acting or portrayal of superman

@Erickz That would miss the entire point of the character. If you want a tragic hero you could always watch Batman. Superman is about hope and adventure. And the underwear should stay, way too iconic to change.

routh's acting was not an issue, but i wouldn't want to see him back. there are people that look like boys and people that look like men, and he's a boy. he's like tom cruise—he'll look young until he's 60. hamm would do, although i see him as more of an alan scott. that joe whatsisname from true blood... he's prolly no older than routh, maybe even younger—but he LOOKS like a man, not a kid.

superman needs to look harder, tougher, and more weathered. he needs the authority that comes with a little wear and tear and maybe even a few crows feet. oh, and that means no tom welling either!

@Erickz I'm sure if you put it on screen no one's gonna look at the flying man and go "why's he wearing red underwear". I've seen manips of the costume on forums, believe it could work. All it takes is to make the tights and suit in general have a texture like the FF4 costumes and it'll look great.
As for tragedy. We don't need it to connect with Clark or Superman. Despite his powers he is just a man. A hard working man who thinks he's not doing enough to help people, surely everyone can connect with that.
He doesn't feel left out like some people suggest and he's not a god. He's just a man struggling to do his best.
So push him to his limits, have a worth foe against him. Have a scene where a bystander is about to be shot with a hail of bullets and him stand in front of it. He's faster than a speeding bullet, but he can't stop all of them. That's what's Superman's about, hope. Doing your best.

@AlternateNo4: Seriously no Homo about the look's, but in my opinion I think Bryan Singer purposely went for a younger looking guy to fill into the role over sequels. Honestly who wants an older looking superman? Who says Brandon Routh doesn't look manly enough? Talk about perception...

Look,no matter how bad the written story and plot was for superman returns, I feel that they chose a young new actor to serve a continuity for a series of films. In which Superman will look like superman age not really being a factor. Routh looks like superman to me he did great! I guess he will need to act tougher and harder that's what actors are for right!?

Routh reboot!

haha yeah trust me i dont think routh supporters are all gay any more than i think people like me are, that want guys that are "tougher and more weathered." (although you should be aware that this site has a number of gay members, so be nice.)

anyway i guess i'm not thinking sequels are an issue because i'm not saying to cast a guy that's 40 or 50, only that IMO they should cast a different physical TYPE. part of it is continuity—routh just doesn't look like he's the same generation as christian bale or even ryan reynolds. i never said he couldn't ACT the part; i just think he looks like he's never even shaved. sorry, that's why they're called opinions.

(i know they're rebooting so this next comment is moot, but according to "returns," brandon routh went to high school with kevin spacey. whaaa??? he looks like his grandson.)

Tom Welling is the best Superman of this time. He is perfect for the role! So its like this photo is offical but then again, its not because its fan-made and they using the Superman Returns type

@KIDDSOUL—also, i'm not trying to be rude or anything but a LOT of people agree with my assessment that routh looks like a "young man" and not a "man." it's been discussed all over the place on this site, which is why people are endorsing guys like manganiello and hamm. even clive owen has gotten a little support—the accent might be tough and he's probably TOO old, but you see my point. not like i'm gonna boycott the thing if pretty boy's back, you know... just my take on it ok?

I don't want Routh back. He went along with Bryan Singer's destructive vision for Superman. Routh's face was plastered on everything that represented that screwed up film. Bryan Singer destroyed everything Superman represents...and Routh went along with it. And for Routh to say he was proud of Superman Returns...give me a [frick]en break. Routh needs to stay the [frick] away from the next Superman film. I want a fresh, new actor. Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh- STAY AWAY from the reboot. It's called a "reboot" for a reason people...they are changing EVERYTHING from the last film and so it'd make no sense to keep the lead-actor the same. We're starting from scratch with Superman here...so NO to brandon routh.

And to all the routh-fans out there...you all do realize the very film he starred in, nearly RE-KILLED the Superman-franchise. Because of "Superman Returns" Supes was nearly going to be put back into "development hell" for another decade. I'm not blaming it all on Routh solely, I put more blame on Bryan Singer and the writers. But still...Routh represents Superman Returns. If he's back for the reboot, people will assume it's a sequel and they won't wanna see it because the last film was boring trash. Same thing happened to "The Incredible Hulk" people didn't wanna see it because they thought it was a sequel to the last hulk film that flopped. And those movies had different lead-actors. So imagine how catastrophic it will be if ROUTH was Superman for the reboot...most likely it won't make money or sales. Routh needs to be left in the past with "Superman Returns" DO NOT BRING HIM BACK.

I never even heard of dude you [frick]ing posted and I could give a shit less if he is some top notch actor. Im one of these Smallville lovers you shouldn't [frick] with. I loved Brandon Routh as Superman also but who the [frick] are you to tell me what the [frick] I can post. I always see people like you intimidating Smallville lovers and making them kinda scared to say the littlest bit of good about the show. Never has a person threw bullets at me for loving the show and I dont like when u guys throw bullets at Smallville lovers but mostly Chloe lovers. I never say shit about you guys liking shit I dont like. I neither say shit to people that dont say shit to me. I stick for for my favorite shows but I don't say shit to people who give their opinions about not liking it. I do it barely (barely) to trolls. I think Im going to far so im about to stop but Dont you ever in yo Damn life FuuCK wit me!!!

Routh is the f**king man! I don't give half a f**k if Nolans involved or not, Routh is the "it" factor for the reboot. WB needs to listen to the fans here, not the retards who just recast things for no good reason. Much as I love Marvel they are leaving a bad taste in many mouths with the casting bullshit. One would think that some idiot in a suit at WB would read some of these sites to see what the f**k is going on with the fans who really care.

Yeah, I believe Routh is the best right now. His acting was on key for the character, who is innocent, caring, sincere, and just plain charming. Superman is the embodiment of the good guy. He is the perfect superhero. The only thing that sucked about Returns is that it was too toned down and just focused on Clark's character and not him as Supes. The sequel should have Doomsday make an appearance so we can see the true superman we know. The one who kicks ass yet for the good of people, not just some nice guy who wears tights and keeps saving random citizens. Darkseid would be badass as well. Give superman a challenge hollywood, I'm getting tired of Lex or if Lex should return, give him his armor that he wears and his egotistic ambitions.

Routh is without doubt the best one to continue. Tom Welling?? Get your head out of the sand for gods sake!!!
Shodowman, when did you become so cynical? He made an emotional/phsycological commitment to portraying the man of steel. He originally signed up for sequels. He took that step. Remeber that superman didnt excist on the screen for over 20 years!! failed attempts. Nicholas Cage anyone?? People didnt want anyone to replace Christopher Reeve. Now we have someone who embraces aspects and looks similar to reeve, but can make the part his own now. Superman Returns didnt kill the franchise! What nonsense. It was a nice film. It could have been better, but forgive its faults, keep in mind what it took to get it up there, with the world wwho loves this character, and be positive, not cynical. If you love the character so much you will inherit some characteristics by being positive, hopeful and non cynical.

Reboot nonsense. Its not the matrix. Starting with a clean slate is nonsense. ts not a mcdonalds happy meal that can just be disposed and consumed again. Superman exists and we need to continue on from here! With Brandon.

you know when Returns first came out i was so overjoyed to have a new Superman film out that the details of its flaws didnt seriously bother me. i was just excited to have my favorite superhero back on the silver screen. I thought ROUTH made an amazing Superman and also still currently believe he would serve the character in way that would benefit even his current haters. In Returns he was given a script to follow. This new movie coming out has been called a SEMI-reboot not a FULL BLOWN reboot...and even the haters dont want a FB reboot...to ask for that would be to get another origin story and too many out there dont want another one of those. Returns wasnt a origin story...it did recap it briefly tho...which was fine in my opinion. Routh shouldnt be replaced so quickly...he should be given another shot at it. I dont want another take on superman...another reboot....another origin story....dc is already messing with WW's origin story....by having her come from the streets instead of maintaining her greek mythology....thats messed up. I dont want a different twist on the MOS origins.... not acceptable. I see several people here that would be happy if the ROUTH reprised his roll as SUPERMAN...very few haters...and its always the same few haters....its irritating.

So much for language and decorum...

I agree with AlternateNo4's assessment that a LOT of actors nowadays that seem to get all the sweet roles are nothing more than overblown baby-faced 'Calvin Klein'-ish underwear models! In fact, I even wrote an article about it (complete with MY thoughts on who should play the Big Blue Schoolboy)...

Routh is not good enough, acts like crap and looks really really gay plus he made the worse superman in friggin history, reprise his role? What role? Superman was James Mardsen in the movie for Christ's sake, he saved the day without superpowers.
Once again remeber the movie:
Terrible Lois, oh so terrible and a mom too = cero hotness.
Lame Superman
SUPER KID AKA JASON KENT (tears of anger here)
LEX LUTHOR wants to destroy the planet to make....ugly as s.hit land
JAMES MARDSEN AKA FAILED CYCLOPS saved the day (instead of doing so in XMEN where he was supposed to (Brina Singers Masterpiece gentelmen.

I really feel bad for people who are still in denial, specially LEE.

PS:TOM WELLING IS SUPERMAN.....FOR 10 YEARS.
