EDITORIAL - MAN OF STEEL: A Tale of Two Trailers

As virtually everyone who has seen The Dark Knight Rises is aware, Warner Bros. preceded the film with a teaser trailer for next summer's Man of Steel. Question is, did the studio do the film a disservice?

At the outset, it should be emphasized that I'm a DC guy. Particularly Superman. I probably discovered the character way back at the ripe old age of five (which happened to coincide with the fifth year of the '60s) via reruns of the George Reeves series and my newfound love for the character in comic books. Growing up I had hundreds of Man of Steel-related comics and thrilled to each new incarnation, whether it was via the Filmation cartoons, the Christopher Reeve films, Lois & Clark (at least the first year), Smallville and so on. I was DC all the way.

But, damn, if Marvel hasn't worked its way into my heart, probably starting with The X-Men, continuing with Sam Raimi's first two Spider-Man films and on to such recent efforts as Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America and, of course, The Avengers. And, truthfully, as I've watched Marvel soar, I've been waiting for DC/Warners to strut their stuff and at the very least match them.

Still waiting.

Yes, there's no question that Christopher Nolan has placed the studio on the box office map again in a major way with his Batman trilogy, but, with the exception of the always excellent various animated series, the DC Universe remains virtually untapped. Green Lantern? Hopes were high, but the film failed to deliver by proving itself unable to adapt the way Marvl's heroes have and reach a mainstream audience; laden with visual effects it proved itself to be a film without genuine heart.

Along the way there have been announcements that have gone nowhere - Supermax, Superman vs. Batman, Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, Shazam and Justice League. And oftentimes announcements have been met with a collective roll of the eyes. Remember George Miller's Justice League that was in active development? Essentially everyone involved said ignore the fact that there was a Batman film series and a proposed Superman one with Brandon Routh, and have DIFFERENT actors play the characters in the JL film -- a film that would have essentially cast 20 year olds in all the key roles. More recently the studio has announced a new Justice League film, seemingly designed to tap into the audience that cheered for The Avengers, but there aren't a lot of people who think that's a good idea either. If anything, Warners/DC should go for a World's Finest film, giving themselves a team-up along the lines that Marvel simply doesn't have.

All of which has led us to next summer's Man of Steel. To be fair, this film seems to have done everything right along the way, from getting Watchmen's Zack Snyder to direct, Henry Cavill to star and featuring a phenomenal cast in the form of Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Michael Shannon (Zod), Russell Crowe (Jor-El) and so on. It also has, by all reports, gone back to the roots of the character and will be giving us a version unlike any we've seen before.

And when Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the film while previewing a special trailer, it certainly looked like they were achieving their goals.

But THEN came the teaser trailer attached to Dark Knight Rises... and a more lackluster response from the audience you couldn't imagine. In its efforts to show what appears to be a more human Man of Steel, the trailer focuses almost exclusively on Clark Kent as a man on a journey to his destiny, with some words of encouragment from (depending on whether you were in America or abroad) Jonathan Kent or Jor-El. And ONE shot of him as Superman, soaring - from a distance - into the stratosphere. This was followed by the title "Man of Steel", the "S" logo and, at least at the midnght screening I attended, NOTHING. Virtually no reaction.

It was disheartening to say the least. As we've all been taught growing up, you have one opportunity to make a first impression, and for a studio trying to get the audience excited about Superman again, this was NOT the impression they needed to make.

The real question is why WOULDN'T they issue the trailer that was shown at Comic-Con? It was maybe 30 or 40 seconds longer, but those precious few seconds -- all of which gave us quick glimpses of Superman as... well, Superman -- make all the difference. They draw you into this new interpretation, tease moments of action that already set this film aparts and shows both the majesty and humanity that Superman represents. THAT trailer would have had midnight audiences and those that followed them cheering.

But now, instead, it's as though they have to start from scratch with the NEXT trailer (which one would assume will be attached to The Hobbit). So rather than have people excited now and anticipating the next glimpse into the film to come, the studio is once again going to be battling audience apathy.

Sometimes it ain't easy being a DC fan.

Take a comparative look at the two trailers - first the theatrical teaser and then a fan-edited version that combines the teaser with the Comic-Con footage - and sound off below on what you think.

I liked both trailers. That Con footage is where it's at though!

It's called a teaser........

They're not going to show a lot of cool stuff now. There's gotta be some build up in each trailer. If you start big and get bigger in each trailer you're going to end up showing too much footage in the trailers by the time the movie gets here.

It was fine for a teaser. Would it have been cooler to see the comic con footage in HD? Of course, but that's the special privilege people get for going to comic con.

Trust me, when we get full length trailers with all kinds of Superman action people are going to go nuts. There won't be a problem getting people excited when they see that stuff.

That's why it was called a teaser man....they'll probably (as you mentioned) add the comic-con trailer or theatrical trailer to the Hobbit. LOOONNGG time yet before the film is released, so they'll keep as much footage as possible away from the public eyes so they don't get tired of it or forget.

Think about it...they have a whole year to keep people interested in their film. Most interest sparks when a full theatrical trailer is released...makes sense to release that closer to the release date so it's still on their minds. Yes you could excite me with a trailer now, but when it finally comes out, that interest and excitement would of died down. You'd have to release yet another trailer with different footage then....that's when you start treading on ground that could spoil the film. A teaser (one shot of superman) is all we need for now this far off!

I certainly understand the teaser aspect, but virtually everyone I've spoken to about it were not impressed. My kids - who had not seen the Comic-Con footage at that point - were not impressed at all, and they LOVE this stuff. Those seconds from the Comic-Con footage didn't reveal much at all, but they did give us glimpses of what was to come.

This article is just incredibly dumb. IT IS CALLED A TEASER PEOPLE! God all we got for batman was a fake city falling apart and a shape of a bat at the end. This is actually my favorite teaser yet. My cousin and friends in the theater who had no idea about the movie can't stop talking about it. Showed how great the dialog and effects are going to be and the tone of the movie. All you need in a teaser and more really.

There were 7,000 people in Hall H who got to see that footage before anyone else (which was the benefit of attending SDCC), but there are literally millions of people who will be seeing the teaser trailer attached to Dark Knight Rises. Many will disagree with me, but this was a tremendous opportunity (ultimately missed) to get people talking excitedly about Superman.

The teaser told you everything a teaser needed to tell you. Have you seen the OLD James Bond trailers from the 80s back? They would tell you the entire PLOT, not just show you spoilerific footage, but they would OUTLINE the spoilers for you. All this had to do was show Superman's "S"

"To be fair, this film seems to have done everything right along the way, from getting Watchmen's Zack Snyder to direct,"
I'm wondering if this should read...
"To be fair, this film seems to have done everything right along the way, except getting Sucker Punch's Zack Snyder to direct,"

Are people forgetting that he not only directed but wrote and produced Sucker Punch? A movie that looked so great, but was the bottom of the barrel in story telling...

To CBM and Hitman: you have only succeeded in annoying the [frick] out of me with that ad. Ads, like trailers, are meant to pique interest. The Hitman ad that plays before every video on here has not piqued my interest, but inspired ire and scorn. Die, Hitman, die.

The Man of Steel trailer/trailer was boring and I see exactly what you mean. Instead of this mundane footage, a better teaser would have been simply the S shield and the release date. Then in a few months, release a kick ass trailer. Simple formula, WB.

I agree with JDuke. Also, the film is almost a year away from being released. They are obviously still working on the post-production, CGI, sound effects etc. What do you expect from an unfinished movie still requiring lots of CGI and other post-production affects? How do you expect them to show-off this new Superman movie without all the action bits that require CG and other post-production work? Look at the Green Lantern trailer - it always looked unfinished and rushed. All this teaser trailer said is that this is a new Superman movie. I loved both the Jonathan Kent and Jor-El trailers.

It's only a teaser and it did was it was supposed to do. There is still a full year before this movie comes out and there is plenty of time to show him fighting in the follow up trailers. I thought the teaser was good. I've always found Superman the most interesting when he is brought down to the human level. Looks like a good portion of this movie will be about him finding his place in the world. Similar to Birthright. I'm really looking forward to this movie. Both versions of the voice over were great. Everyone likes to see more action in their Superman movies, but the fighting isn't what makes him Superman. It would be so easy to make a shitty action filled movie with Superman smashing things, but it's more difficult and interesting to tell a human story.

I meant to add earlier that Dark Knight Rise's teaser didn't need to show much of anything -- there was a billion dollar audience waiting for this film based on the previous two. The audience's last memory of Superman is Superman Returns.... excitement needs to build from the outset and get bigger from there. This if far from a slam-dunk, unfortunately. At least that's my opinion.

Ed @ Great Write up dude! I got a different reaction at my midnight screening people were clapping for it. If you remember the BATMAN BEGINS teaser was really similar to the MAN OF STEEL one. And that movie turned out amazing. I think seeing the Comic Con footage got peoples expectations up and to me the teaser served it purpose.

100% agree with BarnaclePete.

@Tea Exactly, I found it very compelling. It's like the scene where he is hitchhiking. Why would he need to hitchhike? Simply, because he is trying to be like a normal person.

@churchofcomics You are right about first impressions - if they went the opppsite route a showed a lot of action and stuff being destroyed then the first impression there is style over substance where they are adding action just for the sake of action without it supporting the plot. However, I love what Snyder did in the teasers. IMO, it shows alot of substance. The teasers work for me and I was incredibly impressed and excited from what I saw. Therefore, it comes down to opinion whether a person was impressed or not.

For a teaser-trailer it was underwhelming. I didn't even realise it was a trailer for MoS until the kid had the cape on in his garden. Most people must have thought they were watching a trailer for The Biggest Catch!

Still think they boobed casting Amy Adams as Lois Lane, she's 38 now, by the time they get around to doing a sequel she'll be in her 40's. Not quite genius casting for a franchise, especially if they need to use Lois in a Justice League film as well.

If it's one thing DC does right, they don't show every single god forsaken scene before the movie comes out (cough Marvel).

And I agree. It's a teaser, dude. Still got 11 months to advertise. Chillax.

I showed the teaser to some of my friends via youtube, and it took me a disturbingly large amount of time and energy to convince them this was a genuine teaser for the upcoming film and not some fan made thing. :/

Personally I'm sold on the movie, and quite sure it will be my favourite real life Superman of all time. Which actually isn't that hard, because I've never been much of a fan of the old movies (don't hit me). For me the best Superman so far is the one from the Animated Series and Justice League.
