Could Jim Sturgess Be Our Superman?

Could Jim Sturgess Be Our Superman?

Now, just hear me out on this...

Ok, so most of you are probably ready to type in WTF before even reading this article. I understand, but hear me out. Since the Superman reboot has been announced, everyone's been choosing people to be Clark. Names like Jon Hamm and Daniel Cudmore. No one even thought to mention Sturgess. They all wanted him for Spidey. Well, that dream is gone. Now, Superman just hired Zack Snyder to direct what is tentativley known as The Man of Steel. Now where does Jim come into the picture?

Snyder and Sturgess just finished this movie. Now you must be saying "so?" Well, Nolan is known for working with actors he has worked with before (such as Michael Caine, Christian Bale, and Cillian Murphy). Well, so is Snyder (such as Gerard Butler, Carla Gugino, and Scott Glenn). So, this means that they like to "keep it in the family", so to speak. Now, alot of people think that since Jon Hamm is in Sucker Punch, he now has a better chance. While that would be awesome, we still have the problem of age. Hamm is getting pretty old and has even said that he doesn't plan on playing Superman due to his age. But, Jim is exactly what WB is looking for. He's young, he's a talented actor, and he has a great relationship with the director. It could happen.

Now, Jim isn't exactly who would first come to mind when you think of Supes. He is a pretty skinny kid and isn't American (as some people say Clark should only be played by an American) but that doesn't downgrade his talent. If you've seen 21 and Across the Universe, you can see that this kid has talent. And anybody could just go to the gym and get buff. Jason Momoa was really skinny before he became Conan and now you see how ripped he is? The same with Chris Hemsworth. He was a skinny guy before he became the monster he is now.

So, we just have to wait on Snyder to see if he'll give Jim a chance, go for a different choice, or even try to convince Jon Hamm to take it. Also, with Snyder as director, that makes the possibility of Gerard Butler as General Zod even bigger. So, what do you think: should Jim Sturgess be given a chance or not?

Tell me what you think in the comments below. ;)

you know people on this site are getting too damn speculative when they try to find signs that jim [frick]ing sturgess could be superman.

you say the main reason is because snyder, like nolan, like to use the same people in their movies. i dont think leo di caprio was ever in a nolan movie before inception, but nolan chose him.

i also think your thoughts fail to acknowledge the fact that sturgess is 5'11". you cant go to the gym and grow 5 inches.

i have no problem with people fan casting, or even being speculative for that matter, but when you speculate jim sturgess is superman just because he was in a snyder movie, i think youre just praying to god that this is true so you can look back and say haha i told you all.

with that said, if jim sturgess is indeed cast as superman, i will never comment on this site again.

@Anil Rickly I'm not a big superman fan but that Earth One comic looks really cool, are they going to do that for all of DC's icons?

"So, what do you think: should Jim Sturgess be given a chance or not?

I think you are [frick]ing retarded, and if you ever become a superman casting director you need to be shot on sight. The fact you would even use Across the Universe, as a reason for casting this Beatles looking pansy from Britain, as America's premier super hero is a huge sign of how pea brained your brain is.

Hell no to Sturgess. HELL NO.

No to Jim Caviezel.

No to Tom Hardy.

No to every single Brit and Australian under the sun.

Its American or bust. The only other country I'd possibly entertain the idea of having an actor play Superman is Canada, due to Superman's history with Canda, but that's it. THAT'S IT!

Boy was that a stupid choice. I cant get over how stupid it was. How stupid YOU are. Stupid, stupid, stupid. You did that to get a rise from people, you cant possibly be serious. And it worked.

What a twat.

Sturgess will never, ever be Superman. If Nolan even looks at a Brit for Superman, he deserves to be run over.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I would support Jim Sturgess, but people need to stop downgrading Jon Hamm just based solely on his age. If RDJ has proven anything- it's that age is JUST a number. I would support either actor being Superman, just so long as it aint Routh and since we know he's not being allowed anywhere within the vicinity of this film, it gives the director the chance to bring in some REAL talent this time around. So I'm excited.

Amil Rickly,
Masterdisater was harsh for sure, although I had a very similar reaction.

I know he didn't say it the right way, but I for one do think that Superman should be played by an American. He is an American hero. I surely wouldn't object to a Brit playing a known world wide icon of British culture. Superman is for "truth justice and the AMERICAN way" so I really think it is fitting that an American play him.

If you want to test the boundries of your own tolerance, why not support a Japanese man for the role.

The British dont allow any whose not British to direct James Bond or star as James Bond PERIOD. They dont allow anyone whose not British to play James Bond PERIOD.

As Americans, we should not allow anyone whose not American to play Superman PERIOD. Superman is THE symbol of America in films. It would be like having someone from Scotland playing John Wayne in a biopic. The duke would turn over in his grave.

If loving your country, makes you a bigot then hopefully we're all bigots. But technically the word is xenophobe.

@Anil Rickly. You spelled my name wrong lol jk thanks man. I love the art and it's 'fresh' look. I've kinda always disliked how bland and straightfoward comic book art used to be until the 90's and it looks like it just keeps getting better and better!

@some people, I dont want to start a fight but I don't see why superman shouldn't played by an American? He's not even from our world, he's an alien among us. Just because someone is British or what not doesn't mean they can't play the man of steel. I say whoever has the best look, feel, and talent deserves to play superman

LP4 - 10/12/2010, 9:36 AM
@ThreeBigTacos- Because Superman has always been a strictly- AMERICAN icon. It doesn't matter that he's an immigrant. And when you think about it...Supes represents a portion of American history- the immigrant struggle to fit in.

Superman and Captain America are two superheroes whom in my opinion MUST be portrayed by an American.

Without immigrants...you wouldn't have America. I also don't believe that Superman is JUST an American icon.

I could care less if the actor portraying Superman is American or not. As long as he plays the role well and looks the part. Of course...no hint of an accent (*cough* Sam Worthington *cough*)
ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 10/12/2010, 10:53 AM
LP4- I agree with Captian America being an American icon, it's in his name, but as for superman, well he's also a world icon, not jus America's. I don't think superman represents a portion of history where immigrants had to fit in, always thought he stood for hope and freedom. But hey that's just my opinion, everyone has one lol. which actor should you hope to see play as superman?
LP4
LP4 - 10/12/2010, 11:15 AM
@ThreeBigTacos- Well...he does want to fit in with humans and does so by conforming to their ways and culture. Just like immigrants who come here to America try to fit in and adapt to the culture...that's what my own mother had to do anyway =)

Plus Superman has been shown many times through his history waving the American flag in both comics and past films. He also has the classic pose of him holding a perched American Bald Eagle and of course his iconic saying- "I stand for truth, justice and the American way" I understand not all of his colors are American- ie- no white but his red/blue is meant to be sort of a bright and patriotic outword symbol of hope.

For me personally, Supes is the ultimate immigrant and represents a very important part of American history. And yes he is a world icon...but he was created FOR America originally...created to inspire Americans during the Great Depression. Much like how Captain America was meant to inspire Americans during WWII, Supes was created to inspire Americans during the Depression era.

So in all- Superman is more of an American symbol than people realize. =)

I wouldn't get pissed if a Brit or some other foreigner portrayed Superman...just so long as they at least look and act the part, then I'm happy.

For me personally- I mainly want- Jon Hamm to be Superman.

Who would you want to be Supes?
LP4
LP4 - 10/12/2010, 11:36 AM
Ok I know people are gonna rag on me for this, but I actually kinda agree with "masterdisaster" in terms of his James Bond example. If those freaken British won't allow anyone who isn't British to be James Bond...then why should we allow a Brit to be Superman?

Superman has always waved the AMERICAN flag and has always stood for- truth, justice and the AMERICAN way. He's an American icon in terms of the media. We must not forget that.

I'm all for fairness...but if the British want us to cast one of their own as Superman. Then they better be ready to allow an American to be James Bond for once. Fairness and acceptance should never be a one-way street.

ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 10/12/2010, 1:11 PM
LP4: honestly I wouldn't mind Jon Hamm to be superman so as long as he can fulfill the role, I also wouldnt mind someone completely underground and unknown for the role.
I see you're point of view now, and it's very interesting! I'm not exactly a huge Superman, but I do respect it when the films/comics have a bigger meaning not only to comic book readers but also to a person individually. :)

@ LP4....as much as we have disagreed in times past...i definatly agree with you and masterdisaster on this one. Its not about being a bigot or a xenophobe or a racist... its simply symbolic. No need for us to get rude about it but its definitely a no brainer. SUPERMAN is an AMERICAN icon....as is CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Martin Campbell isn't British you american idiots. And he was th director. Christian Bale is Welsh, and Batman. George Clooney, american and Batman. Even though I'm not British myself I recognise that in general non-american actors are less arrogant and play characters with more depth.

Oh and Hugh Jackman - Australian, Ryan Reynolds - Canadian.

Now one part I believe should be american is Captain America. Mostly becuase I could care less about him as a character.

Oh and Superman is a [frick]ing alien, not american.
