Russell Crowe Hints At A Jor-El/General Zod Scrap In Man Of Steel

It seems this version of Jor-El might have a more physical role than some other incarnations of the character we have seen, as Russell Crowe Tweets about a prolonged battle with Michael Shannon's villainous General Zod..

Any previous screen versions of Superman's Daddy Jor-El have always taken a more passive, mentor type role and pretty much served the plot by doling out advice to Supes and some exposition to the audience. Well that may change with Zack Snyder's upcoming take on the mythology. Russell Crowe, who will play Jor-El, certainly suggests that we will see some fisticuffs from the character as he goes toe to toe with Michael Sheen's General Zod..

Here are the Tweets from Crowe..

15km bike ride, umpteen hours fighting Michael Shannon. He's very hard to put down.

Hard to tell who wins, we are still fighting tomorrow

In most versions of Superman's origin story Jor-El sends his infant son off to Earth and then dies along with the rest of the Kryptonians when their planet is destroyed. Judging by this I'm guessing Snyder will be tweaking that slightly and have Jor-El go down swinging. But who knows. There have been some very strange developments with Man Of Steel recently with a bearded, aproned Clark Kent along with most of the cast snapped on set in Vancouver-doubling for Alaska. One thing is for sure, I can't wait to see how all of this pans out.

I was trying to find a picture of Jor-El and Zod fighting for the article, there isn't one! Snyder is certainly making this movie his own.

Gotta be on Krypton, so no superpowers then, right?

Hey have the comics ever done a play on words in the comics and featured the planet CRYPTon? Shouldn't they have done that for Blackest Night? If not, there you go DC. You can have that one for free. Don't say I never gave ya' noth'n.

Goddamn, yes, obviously Goyer too..but the director does have some control over what stays and what doesn't in the script. Snyder will be bringing that vision to the screen.

@Superguy Im against changing the whole [frick]ing background of the character.

Why make a Superman movie if you gonna change everything? Come up with your own character ifthat's the case.

so um, this is basically going to be a fight between two humans, no? They have no powers on krypton.

So this does not excite me. Zod is just going to whoop dat ass

@Superguy Returns was a rehash on Donner's take. I'm not talking about the movies. I'm talking about the character.

@MrEko I just think they arechanging everything about Superman. So Jor-El is an armyman now? CHange for the sake of changing, to be his take. Than come up with a character of your own...

@intruder.....a rape scene would definitely get Superman a R rated film....i doubt WB is feeling would be the smartest move since Watchmen.

I'm going to say this with full expectation of getting flamed for it but since they are changing things about the character, one thing that always made me scratch my head is that all of a sudden a yellow sun gives Kal-el all of these new powers that were not inherent in his alien physiology. It would be interesting to see these abilities present on krypton on a much SMALLER scale.

So under the red sun you could pretty much heat up your dinner with your heat vision instead of the intensity of Superman's normal optical blasts on earth. Perhaps instead of the freeze breath on earth the Krypton equivalent would be a fan blowing on the high setting, Kryptonians having the ability to hover for short periods instead of flying, having increased strength and durability but not be impervious to injury (kinda like kryptonians being at captain america strength level compared to humans) and so on.

While not impervious to extinction as their planet explodes, I would like to see an advanced civilization not only with intelligence but also in regards to how much more they are physically advanced on the evolutionary scale compared to mortal humans.

Jorel fighting Zod. Bring it on. I am ready for a reboot of Superman that brings it. The main problem with Superman Returns was that it was not very original and more of a tribute to Donner/Reeves. Hell, Routh even looked like Reeves as Clark Kent.

I am really looking forward to this flick and not second guessing every plot twist they insert. My only wish is respect for the original source material be kept in context. Superman is Kalel, he comes to Earth due to the destruction of Krypton, grew up in Smallville, and moved on to Metropolis as an adult. Costume alterations, whether Martha and or Jonathan are still around, or Lois has red or black hair are minor issues. I am looking for a great story with plenty of action and Superman delivering some knock out blows instead of the wimpy stuff we saw in Superman Returns.

Actually, in some incarnations, Krypton was a very hostile planet embroiled in wars, so it's no great surprise to me that Jor-El would fight. In fact, Kal-El is always said to have very Kryptonian instincts, so he'd have to have the mantle of hero passed down. Jor-El died trying to save Krypton just as Superman would die saving Earth.

@Shaman & MrEko - glad to hear that others would be open to it, I will be sure to send Snyder a memo detailing my idea!

@Scorpion - I wasn't thinking along the lines of making scientific sense just more logical. The yellow sun would certainly be the reason why he becomes so powerful as it amplifies his kryptonian physiology, I just think it would make a better story with a more solid background is all.

I respect those who prefer the traditional approach to the powers manifesting under the yellow sun and at the day I have never had a real problem with it...just throwing this alternative out there for discussion.

This makes total sense and will still remain in canon.. From the comments, Jor el discovered/created the phantom zone. Meaning he would have to have had a big part in putting Zod in there.. And this time, a physical part at that. Why would Zod hate his heirs if all the guy did was build the prison that the council put Zod in ? I think that at the end of the fight Jor el locks Zod up in the Zone hence his vendetta against Jor el.. And since Jor el is dead Zod goes after the next best thing.. His son Kal El
