Upon Further Review

Hello CBMers!!!
After watching a film in multiple viewings, my opinions on them become more defined and clear. These reviews entail three parts: the good, the bad, and the questionable. After the compilation will come the final grade for the film.

"I WILL FIND HIM!!!"
-General Zod

Man of Steel

What's it about?

This is the latest attempt to get Superman up, up, and away within the world of film. Superman's origin is retold in episodic method, as you see how certain events framed his character. The story focuses on a dissonant Clark Kent in search of purpose in his life. He discovers his true origin and powers, and then must put it all together and become Superman. As Superman he must defeat enemies from his destroyed home world, who have come to Earth in search of creating a new home for themselves.

The Good

• Acting. Everyone is simply at their best. Crowe, Shannon, Adams, Costner, and yes Cavil were all incredible.

• Action. Everything you could of ever dreamed of for a Superman film is here. This Superman IS Superman, not a yet a symbol but someone who makes incredibly difficult choices that will no doubt shape his character.

• Settings. A spectacular Krypton, still an alien world but very worn here. Smallville is familiar and intimate, while Metropolis is sprawling and massive.

• Music. Not the traditional theme everyone is more accustomed to, but Hans Zimmer crafts a powerful and rousing score throughout the film.

• Characters. Memorable and enjoyable characters, from Col. Hardy to the determined Faora. I liked Shannon's General Zod, easily one of the best comic book villains of recent memory.

The Bad

• Pacing. Granted this film moves very well, but many elements could be fatiguing, lots of action back to back. Some characters are conveniently put into certain aspects of the film.

• Product Placement. Many joke about the amount of product placement, with good reason.

The Questionable

• Will Lombard have success trolling the intern pool?

• Is Zod a job creator? That's alot of damage to repair.

• Is Martha a good refrigerator salesman?

• Wonder what Zod's emblem stands for?

In the end

This movie seemed to divide audiences like few can, which I find confusing. The movie is a far departure from the previous Superman film entry, Superman Returns. This is the Superman film that we don't deserve, but the one we need. Cavil is outstanding as Superman, and Zod was a terrific and memorable screen villain. Superman was punching, PUNCHING finally. My favorite scene of course is when Zod threatens Martha, just incredible Superman's reaction. The greatest thing this film accomplished, lies in its universe creating. An indelible groundwork is laid, leaving untold enthusiasm for all future entries, reminiscent of Batman Begins.

Grade

A+

Good review. I enjoyed reading through your review. I really loved Man of Steel and for me personally it's up there with Superman and Superman 2.

THE GOOD = Henry Cavill

ZOD

and the Effects.

THE BAD =

Forgettable Superman score I still cant remember (like making a Star Wars film without the Star Wars music)

Lost the magic of what a Superman movie really is

Lois knowing who Superman is before he even is Superman officially to the public

Lana Lang who's playing Lois Lane

So many plot holes in the entire movie its not even funny

The Daily Planet crew no one even cared about

All the BAY Explosions and not caring for human life

I'm sure I can think of more later lol

Yeah it should have been awesome, even up there with AVENGERS, WATCHMEN, etc but no, just an average superhero flick which it shouldn't have been - ITS THE GRANDADDY OF SUPEHEROES FFS!!!

Anyway nice read, was a complete letdown and should have been the top superhero movie of last year easy.

Grade C

Good review, I still enjoy the film after watching it a few times. My favorite superhero movie and possibly overall film.
I know Zod gets a bad wrap for not fighting better considering he is a bred soldier. I wonder if all the citizens had to go through some type of military training considering Jor-El had an armored suit but he was a bred scientist, Just a thought and also how much fighting would Zod even come across as a general?

Decent movie, better than Marvel's 2013 output but I have a feeling 2014 will be Marvel's year (& 2015 too).

@leee777 The score wasn't as good as the Williams theme but what score is? Williams is king. Hans Zimmer produced an amazing score which I can hum right now. Its not forgettable...

@KalKent - exactly. Zimmer did such an amazing job for having to follow Williams I believe. I put on the scene were Supes is in the light of the world engine just to hear the score sometimes.

Loved the film. It ain't perfect, but this was the Superman I
imagined to be on screen?

Thanks to Snyder. Who else would have thought to make Superman
fight in that speed and intensity. Wouldn't really make sense
if Superman moves and fights just like an ordinary human.

However, if assuming that we get a Superman-Batman fight scene,
I think Batman wouldn't even see the punches coming. Unless ofcourse,
if Superman does not fight him seriously. Especially when MOS just
killed his previous enemy.

This get's me excited on how they will pull off a decent fight scene
on the two heroes.
