Lindsay Blackett, Alberta’s minister of culture and community spirit, confirmed on Monday that Alberta will not be used as a setting in Zack Snyder’s
Superman: Man of Steel. Instead, Chicago will be the area where filming will take place. It was reported a few days ago that filming of Warner Bros. Pictures' next Superman movie will take place in the Chicago area starting in August. Production will also be centered in far west suburban Plano.
Said Blackett:
"It was us or them," he said of the film that was one of two feature films worth $100 million and $200 million that had looked to land in Alberta. From what I understand (the production) needed aircraft carriers and the Canadian military doesn't have those. They needed attack helicopters and things like that and we just don't have them and the U.S. was willing to give them whatever they wanted. It's logistics and equipment. Not competitiveness, not our crews, not location, not the amount of money or anything like that - it was just down to the hard assets.
Lindsay also mentions that the province of Alberta is in talks for a Disney movie. Also, filming for the Superman reboot is still expected to take place in Vancouver later this year.
However, most important thing that can be gleamed from this report (in regards to the Superman reboot) is that it indeed implies that this movie will involve the US Military and might therefore pack one heck of a punch - the need for such an arsenal of military hardware certainly creates images of profuse adrenalin packed action. What do you think of the use of such a strong military involvement?
Superman: Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Amy Adams is slated for a December 2012 release.
