Zach Snyder's Superman to be shot in Vancouver

According to Peter Leitch, chair of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of BC and president of North Shore Studios and Mammoth Studios, Zach Snyder's next major feature film is headed to Vancouver.

It looks as if the city of Vancouver may indeed be the site of the Superman reboot. Vancouver seems to be a popular choice because it serves as the fictional Metropolis in Smallville.

A Globe and Mail article states that a source has stated that the next Superman movie will be shot in Vancouver and that shooting is likely to commence in summer next year.

The following is Leitch's quote from The Globe and Mail website:
“It’s good news,” said Leitch, who says the local production industry has been on fire thanks in part to the HST, but also because of the experienced film crews in Vancouver, the quality of life here and the city’s proximity to Los Angeles.

“I think it’s a great signal that we’re doing very well here and that we’ve got the quality technicians. ... We’ve got a reputation now that we turn out quality product here and I think that’s made the difference.”

Vancouver, British Columbia has a large film and television production industry, which earned it the nickname "Hollywood North." It usually serves as a substitute location for other cities and locales (from wikipedia).

Smallville is filmed there already....might Warner Brothers use some of the same locations? I think they own or lease an entire road next to the train rail line, if memory serves.

Sod it. Brandon Routh for Superman!!!

@ cobracleveland - I don't like the thought of a darker Superman. You've got Batman for dark :)

Zack Snyder, if on the unlikely event you read this; Seeing as we're stuck with you in the director's chair, do us one small favour for this Superman film, keep it fast paced and energetic like you did with Dawn of the Dead. Don't turn it into another slo-mo fest like the rest of your films. And make it more gripping then Watchmen. Otherwise, give up the job in favour of Neil Blomkamp or Matt Reeves.

Why must people quote wikipedia as a source for some information though. *face palm*

@superguy- your disdain for Routh always makes my day. I am very excited about this movie with or without Routh but he is still the best choice IMO. He has the required acting chops to play Superman (which I don't think says much), the look, and let's not forget the voice. He does have a voice that sounds like Superman to me. NEW SCRIPT, NEW DIRECTOR, SAME GREAT ROUTH!!!

ROUTH OR BUST!!!

MY VOTE FOR AN UNKNOWN...THAT CAN ACT AND TRULY HAS THE BUILD, MUSCLE AND LOOK OF SUPERMAN...AND NO DAMN LIGHT BRIGHT COSTUME.

ALEX ROSS SUPERMAN LOOK?..

They should make a period piece out of Superman. The reason there seems to be so much difficulty in making him relevant to today's audiences is that he's NOT relevant to today's audiences. Every comic book hero is a product of the time in which they were originally created, and feel most relevant and whole when their stories take place in that era from which they came.

A Superman movie should be a nostalgia piece, like Indiana Jones or Simon Wincer's take on The Phantom.

People should feel sentimental and impossibly idealistic and hopeful when they watch a Superman movie. And his costume should stay the same, as ridiculous as it may look.

It just somehow makes him seem all the more altruistic and selfless that he would fly around doing his amazing feats dressed like some corny old-time circus strongman.

Of course, I am not holding my breath for any such thing where Zack Snyder is concerned. His film vocabulary seems to be pretty much limited to "dark" and "badass". I'm sure his film will be really shiny and absolutely thrilling for the all of the misanthropic sociopath fanboys who think every comic/superhero movie should have the grim tone of TDK.

Remember, the essence of Superman is that he could crush all of humanity if he wanted to, but he chooses to cradle it.

He IS the world's greatest boyscout in the truest sense. Like that rare cop who actually pursued that career because he wants to SERVE AND PROTECT. Superman is entirely selfless and unwaveringly principled.

There are far too few characters like that in any entertainment media these days.

BruceWayneNewton@ You used the terms "Routh" and "required acting chops" in the same thought. That I find highly amusing. Thanks for the good chuckle. :-p Sorry to disappoint you, but Routh is out of the loop on the new film. Completely. Take it to the bank. ;-)

I'm with you GUNSMITH. Unknown who can act and has the build and look. No compromising. From all indications they are going more with a younger Birthright storyline type of Superman, so I don't think the Alex Ross look will work.

I still think if Conway puts on some more muscle, he could work as an unknown playing the part. He has a good athletic build on him. Solid theater background.

This is tongue in cheek, so don't be judging his delivery here as anything but being so, but at the end I think he hits the serious note. Definitely has the look. I find it highly amusing and this Lois nails it! :-P

@UncleBuck

Beresford street studios where Smallville is shot own pretty much all of the property around the area and the train runs right across the property, also, the street you see them use all the time that's right below the train is a public street, in fact all the streets around and trough there property are public. you can stand in the street and really the only thing keeping you from walking down dowtown Metropolis is a fence.

Once again Lee...please show where I have ever endorsed Welling for the part of Superman. You won't be able to. I want an unknown and Routh isn't getting the part, so give it a rest. No matter how much you post Routhboot it will never...ever...happen.

@brucewaynenewton- Routh has the required acting chops??? So ur saying they need a guy who has ZERO dialogue, ZERO talent and ZERO screen-presence?? [frick] that. U routh-bootists already had ur routh-superman film. Time to quit being so damb greedy, routh is GONE thank god

LEEE777 I honestly have no idea how someone as cool as you could like routh :P We agree on the spiderman reboot, yet we couldn't disagree more on this. Routh literally put me to sleep the two times I tried to watch Superman Returns, this is not a joke at all, he literally put me to sleep both times and it was only 4 pm.
