Zack Snyder On Superman: Film Won't Follow Any Particular Comic Storyline

While speaking to French movie site Filmsactu.com, the recently announced director of the upcoming Superman reboot spoke about the direction his movie would take..

Since Snyder was announced as the man who would helm the latest Superman movie the net has been abuzz with speculation as to what story it would follow. Rumors of Zod as the villain seem to have been debunked, but the news that the movie will focus on the early life of The Man Of Steel have been confirmed. While talking to Filmactu Snyder reiterated this, and also stated that the script won't follow any specific comic arc..

"As I have already explained, the film will focus on the early days of Superman, so there will be no links with the other films. This is not a remake then. Similarly, although I still cannot talk about the script, I can assure you that this new Superman will not be based on any comic book in particular."

If the French translation is accurate I guess we are in for yet another origin story. But hopefully Snyder will pull something unexpected out of the bag. Its also not really surprising that the film won't be following any particular comic storylines, its always the way unless its a direct adaptation like Watchmen. Lets just hope it doesn't deviate TOO far away either. Maybe leave the kid out of this one!

I think not basing it on any particular comic book/graphic novel is ideal. Also, I think the case of primacy should be adhered to in that the movie makers should not go off on a tangeant like they did with Catwoman. In other words, keep Superman in the form we all love, don't change the character's origins and personality in order to modernise it. Plot, scene settings and temporal aligning can be modernised.

excellent news,i was worried it was gonna be based on "birthright".

lets hope he doesn't base it on a certain tv show that i love as well. :D

Deadpool: I was also not keen on the reboot being based on "Birthright", so yeah this is great news.

Also I have to say that with Snyder as director, the studio and Nolans better not treat him like a puppet. He should do what he thinks will work.

IGNORING the style "underwear over spandex" would be quite commendable.

Open letter to Zack Snyder:
This is Dr. Fate. I have seen the future. While I cannot divulge what happens in the future of this project, I can tell you that if you focus on the "origin" story, you will end up sharing a room with M. Night Shyamalan at Happy Acres Retirement home.

Conversely, if you put your attention to action, explosions, dramatic chases, a battered Superman( w/o being weakened by, oh, say, kryptonite!), getting the hot girl (Lois), and a formidable threat to the planet from an opponent whose name could rhyme with Park Ride, you will reap treasures, pleasures beyond your fathoming, hotties from now till you die (in old age, they will even wipe your butt and rub oatmeal all over your bald head - don't knock it) and you will be known as the Godfather of CBM's.

Heed the words of Fate.

I think if Snyder really is doing a 'Superman the Early Years' thing, then he is making a massive mistake. Ignoring the fact Smallville pretty much has the monopoly on it I have to say, I think people are bored with seeing Superman's origin story.

And I don't think Snyder can offer anything more to the story - unless he tries some Batman Begins thing of 'Superboy' wandering the globe, which sounds awful.

The story WILL have to borrow elements from a few novels and comics...Most cmbs do. I heard Goyer loves the new Superman Earth One Novel..... I don't think we need more "early days" stories. Start the movie w him already Superman Snyder! No young teen looking Supes either....

We just cant seem to get pass
origin and just plain ole boring
SUPERMAN movies.

Im hoping this will be a success
but not following any comicbook
arch has me a little worried.

Sounds like the guy may be coming
up with yet another failed version
of the man of steel.

I guess we'll just have to wait and
see with fingers crossed and expections

He said the early years of Superman, so maybe they'll briefly touch on Clark living on a farm etc, (hopefully in opening credit form) and then focus on Supes in his early years as a hero. That could work.

Unless Welling is going to play Superman... that might not be bad.

I don't see origin story mentioned by Snyder. I see early years of Superman, meaning he is discovering his role in Metropolis and what kind of hero he may become. Besides, I didn't think they had the rights to work with the Krypton origin story, but I haven't followed that close enough to know one way or the other.

As long as it's a big, bad, super throw down, worthy of an actual comic book (that doesn't peg Lex as the main villain) I'll be happy.

And True Blood's Joe Manganiello as Super Man/Clark Kent:

I didn't mean the exodus from Krypton specifically when I said origin, but his early life IS part of his origin! At any rate it certainly won't be dealing with events past anything we have seen in previous movies.

Guys we have to reestablish some type of beginning for sequels and such. But I don't think he should dwell on it

I think a movie showing why he becomes Superman would be something new and something good to see, that's what this is looking like being.

FoxForce5 - never seen that guy act but he looks very good for the role! When I think of Superman casting I always try to think of someone who looks like the man other heroes would turn to in trouble, that last image gives me that vibe!

It's not following any particular storyline? But it's got to be based on something right?

Like maybe a current tv series that is ending soon and just happens to have the greatest Lois n Clark since Reeves n Kidder....and arguably the greatest Lex Luthor ever portrayed on screen.

"The fan out cry for Tom Welling and Erica Durance to continue on in the roles of Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane is deafening. There is no indication that Zack Snyder is interested in either actor at this point, or that he would even consider turning Superman into a big screen version of Smallville. But he hasn't stated anything contrary to that fact, either."

I wouldn't be surprised if this happens.

Eye on the prize!

Got his early years in Smallville.

haha, "he hasn't stated anything contrary to that fact either". Yeah, and he hasn't said that Superman WON'T be wearing a frakkin pink tutu as his new costumer, but I think its a safe bet!
YourMomNaked
YourMomNaked - 10/16/2010, 1:20 PM
@RorMachine...Apples to oranges, my friend. I'd say Welling's popularity makes him a safe bet. In fact, I'd say it's highly likely he gets offered the role. The studios are short on time and far too many see Welling as Superman, already. Give me one good reason why they wouldn't consider him. If you're gonna use the Smallville movie argument, I'd say that's exactly why so many see him as this generations Superman and exactly why there is so much fan support for him getting the role. You and some others may not like the idea, but it is a reality. I wouldn't be surprised if he lands it. Makes sense to me (and so many others). But I strongly disagree that having Welling or Durance cast in MOS would make it a Smallville movie (unless they use the theme or reference The Blur). It's already setup. He's Clark Kent and she's Lois Lane. We'll see, though.
DCfan89
DCfan89 - 10/16/2010, 1:33 PM
Using the smallville actors for this movie is very ignorant.. Why would you do that. You'll have continuity issues and never-ending questions it would KILL this movie.... Is that not clear? Does that not make sense?
jazzman
jazzman - 10/16/2010, 1:36 PM
sorry but Welling is good for Smallville tv series but he aint good of a actor on film.

@DCfan89

i so agree with u

the same people who want Tom Welling and Erica Durance in the movie would also want Allison Mack, Michael Rosenbaum and even Justin Hartley. that would kill MOS to be honest we need fresh new actors to star in MOS.
Polygame
Polygame - 10/16/2010, 1:45 PM
Maybe it will pick up right after the end of Samllville IMHO that would be epic.

Even if some despise the show, truth is, it made enough money to pay a lot of salaries for 10 years. Even if some "real superman fans" want it a certain way and hate Wellings, the studio will go for the mainstream audience route. Ask your 10 years old niece who is superman..

They will not start over with an unknown or another 'guess' like Routh.

We will all have to wait and see anyway. Myself, I totaly give my vote to Wellings.

YourMomNaked
YourMomNaked - 10/16/2010, 1:49 PM
@DCfan89...because the general movie going audience doesn't give a flying [frick] about continuity. Ugh, the infamous RETCON non issue, again? Seriously?! They just want a good [frick]ing superhero flick. Comic book readers are only a very small percentage of the movie going public. Superman comic book readers are trumped by Smallville's viewers, too. The recent super hero movies aren't aimed at the narrow comic book reading audience, they're directed at the teenaged summer movie going population that is more likely to recognize Welling over Routh as Superman (whether they are avid Smallville or Superman fans).

@jazzman...wanting Welling and Durance (or even Rosenbaum) isn't the same as having the entire Smallville cast involved. Don't be idiotic.

@Polygame...seems both the most logical thing to do and the most financially sound thing to do. The studios will acknowledge the popular opinion over the narrow non RETCON understanding folks.
jazzman
jazzman - 10/16/2010, 1:58 PM
@YourMomNaked

its not been idiotic people who want these actors would also want the other actors also. u talk about how popular Smallville is well these same people who love smallville would also want Michael Rosenbaum as Lex and some of the other actors.

Superman MOS need fresh new actors
