Zack Snyder On Whether Or Not He'll Film Superman In 3D!

In an interview with Digital Spy, the director and his wife talk about whether they'll film the movie in 3D, working with Chrisopher Nolan and Snyder also shares his thoughts on the Richard Donner version...

"I don't know for sure, I can't say for sure," Snyder told Digital Spy when asked whether he plans on shooting the Superman reboot in 3D. "But I will say that the experience of the 3D in Guardians was so successful for what I wanted it to do. I think that 3D is pretty awesome if it's done as part of the cinematic language as opposed to being a gimmick."

His wife and co-producer Deborah Snyder also said that it was "really just too early to tell" if it will be if the superhero movie will be filmed in the increasingly popular format but added: "We have such enormous respect for Chris and Emma and their work. We've been such fans and we're just thrilled to be working with them."

"I like the Donner version," Snyder finished by saying. "It's hard not to like it, it's so awesome but I don't think this will have anything to do with any of those."

@Shaman- WHY SHOULDN'T IT??? Everyone wants to see o'l Supes flying in 3D finally. It's a Superman-fan's wet dream to see that on the big screen.

o_0 ?

@Ajax- Again no offense, I just need to address this issue of whether or not Bryan Singer's Superman film was a mimic-It copied everything- the rooftop-scene, their lex luthor real-estate scam, Lois Lane passing out (copy of Margot Kidder's lois passing out) Routh's bumbling Clark Kent (the bumbling Clark Kent was originated by Chris Reeve and Donner) everything was a mimic in that film.

""I like the Donner version," Snyder finished by saying. "It's hard not to like it, it's so awesome but I don't think this will have anything to do with any of those."

that is absolutely the most hopeful quote yet!!!.........Superman is my #1 favorite character. no question. and while I love the Donner version dearly, i want to see something fresh and new, something that stands on its own. That's why the only true Superman since Donner (in media other than comics) is the Timm version. it feels 'right' but unique at the same time...oh man, fingers crossed here!!

LP4- Uh... no. It is NOT nor will it EVER be every "Superman-fan's wet dream to see o'l Supes flying in 3D". It IS however, every 3D/SUPERMAN FANS' "wet dream" to ever get to see that. And my comment wasn't only fueled by my hatred of 3D or even only directed at the use of that gimmick but also to the reference of Donner's Superman films. They SHOULDN'T be referenced unless as a "what NOT to do" guideline, period. They WERE awesome for their time, but not nearly as awesome in our day and age.

nice one JoshW

Superman in 3D could work only if its filmed in 3D but then again Superman dont have to be in 3D.

@Everyone- You guys DO realize you don't HAVE to see it in 3D right? Even if Snyder filmed in 3D there is always the option to either- pay more money and see it in 3D or pay regular price for regular format (non-3D) in my opinion it's always good to have at least the OPTION to see it in 3D or not. So I don't get why you are all so uppity and opposed to it.

@The4thWall- Batman it makes sense not to film in 3D cause he is BATMAN he is realistic. Superman is anything but realistic. He is purely fantasy so filming him in 3D could work just like it will with Green Lantern.

@Shaman- I've been a Supes-fan since I was a kid (during the Donner age) i'm not some kid so I'm not part of that group- "every 3D/Superman Fans"

I just think it would be cool to see Supes flying in 3D and punching someone in 3D/slow motion.

As for the Donner reference I am not sure what you are referring to...

Shaman - 10/18/2010, 10:20 AM
LP4- Well, i have the right to not only be against 3D but also voice my opinions as much as you are. So i really don't see your point of being so uppity and opposed to our opinions.

Where in my comment did i ever say you were "some kid" and not "a Supes-fan"??? You very clearly ARE a Supes-fan but ALSO a 3D fan so yes, that makes you a "3D/Superman Fan". So don't speak on behalf of every other Superman fan that actually doesn't like 3D. Because you're just not one of them.

I don't like 3D cause it gives me a splitting headache and makes everything that moves on screen all fuzzy. Nothing you will ever say will change my perception of 3D. That's is MY opinion, as a Superman fan.

And my point about Donner's films is that they are dated and shouldn't be used as a blueprint for the next film, as that approach made "Superman Returns" fail miserably.

I know most of you guys are sick of lex luthor on film, as am I. But I think the villain in the first movie should be lex metallo and intergang should be hired as henchmen for lex. You have to start somewhere. And metal should make everything fit, since in the comics metallo was supermans first encounter with kryptonite in the modern continuity.

What Zack Snyder really means to say is

Zack: "No, WB has not yet told me when they'll remove my balls and DEMAND that I convert this movie to 3D. Those execs will sure love the extra $$$ at the expense of my film!"

There, I fixed it up for you Zack.

@Shaman- Well...I haven't seen too many 3D films so I'm not exactly a fan of it. I'm just curious as to how Supes would look in 3D. That is all. But in general, I love Supes. I don't care if it's in 3D or not...I will see the film regardless. But yeah, I just also think if GL, Cap America and Thor can all be done in 3D why not our hero too? Just a thought.

LP4- Surely fans of 3D should get a 3D Superman film. It would suck for them only to see it in regular format. So in that sense, i agree with you. But what some people don't understand is that to make a 3D film, scenes must be filmed in certain angles so that things come at you where as in regular format, they'd be free to shoot the angles how they feel would better suit the story. That means that certain films that are actually shot in 3D, wouldn't be as nicely rendered for people that prefer watching films in a regular format. Certain scenes could appear out of place or awkwardly shot. Best example i've seen was in Alice in Wonderland. The scenes where she fought the Jabberwocky were ridiculously shot for people watching it in regular format. It looked as tacky as a first person videogame. That method of filming doesn't fit well on a big screen that doesn't show a 3D film. It looks even worse on a home theater system, let alone a simple tv/dvd player.

I'm one of the most anti-3D people there is, but I like the way he thinks about it. The reason I'm against it is because it's mostly used as a gimic since it's popular right now. I don't think it's necessary, but if he can figure out a way to do it well, then I'm fine with it.

@Shazam, yeah just a thought. Heck maybe with certain dvd releases...you can get the 3D glasses and just have the 3D experience at home. That could be a way to release it in regular format for the big screen while appeasing people who really want 3D. It could be a good money-maker. :)

I, for one, am glad that 'this will NOT have anything to do' with Donner's version. That version is done to death. Let it go already. If you can't, then go watch it over and over again.

This generation desperately needs a new version of Superman. Not some re-hashed character from beyond the grave. We neither need nor want another Superman Returns.

3D? No thanks. If they do film it in 3D, I'll watch the 2D version as they usually have both in the theaters. 3D isn't for me, I get nauseated. Whether they have Welling, Routh, or someone else as the Man of Steel, I'll be there to watch.
