Singer Still Cryptic About His Superman Involvement

Singer Still Cryptic About His Superman Involvement

A new confrontation with Superman Returns director Bryan Singer yielded yet more non-information about the sequel to the last Superman movie...

By ComicBookMovie - Dec 05, 2008 12:12 AM EST
Filed Under: Superman
Source: UGO

this from intrepid UGO reporters...

Are you officially involved in this talk of the new (Superman) film?

Bryan Singer: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.

But when talk happens they’ll call you.

BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.

But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.

BS: No.

This is infuriating! What I believe is going on, from past reports and comments, is that Singer is NOT involved in the current talks with Warner Bros and DC where they are STILL discussing a complete Superman reboot. Once the direction of the new film is cemented, we will hear that this guy had indeed been dumped. That seems to be the consensus of the fans. They want a new director with a new direction. Am I right?

It was a great dissapointment seeing what he did with Superman after two successful X-Men movies. I'm totally agree with Ecksmanfan.

Hey guys, ever asked for a "wopper" at McDonald's???

Your kinda asking the wrong guy here. The only thing he knows for sure is that DC and HIM aren't talking to each other at all. They're on a BREAK!!! IMHO, when you're on a break, it's your human RIGHT to go see elsewhere! SCREW YOU RACHEL!!! (Tapping twice my fists together at her symbolically)

The only reason he's giving us these "Yea-No" answers is that the KID in him still prays at night that DC will ring his doorbell baring a script on a golden platter for him to direct. Ain't gonna happen, i don't care if he still DOES believe in Santa Claus.

LOLOLOLOL!!! Wow.. Shaman that was pretty harsh but I have to agree I think Singer slit his own throat with Superman Returns. His man love for Donner assured his doom. I don't think it's that difficult to come up with a script for a new Superman movie and I don't even think it would be hard to not ditch the last one and move forward. They just have to be sure what they are going for. I'm sorry a sappy love story is not what people want. Did he think he was directing Leonardo DiCaprio or something? I was waiting for Celine Dion voice during those super stalker scenes.. come on.. it isn't that difficult! And as I said before.. I REFUSE to believe they spent $250 million on that movie.. someone got paid off that debacle.. what the hell did each character get $20 million to do the movie? I don't think so.. I am a die hard Superman fan and I can't wait for the next installment but Superman being the last person on earth and blowing up isn't what I want to see in the end.. sorry..

I also think Marvel is just laughing hesterically as they keep hitting the Sweepstakes with every film.. I just don't get it how hard is it to get it together for god sakes.. Maybe if they had some true leadership in play instead of taking there queues from what the next guy is doing they'd be further down the road.. it's sad.. they are milking one property tryingt o figure out how to transfer that films success to Superman and others.. when they should be looking at them as individual projects and what works for batman might not work for the others..

They need to do like Marvel has...Take the producer of the successful franchise(whoever produced the Batfilms) and put them as exec producer of the whole shootin match. It would be aping of the highest order, but they could even follow the formula so much as to have a whole bunch of solo films leading up to a JLA movie....

It works for Marvel.

I think Singer is actually a great director, like said earlier, look at what he did for the first two X-men movies. I actually have no idea why he didn't stay for the third one...but...whetever. But as far as Superman Returns goes, It was more the writers' faults than his. They were the idiots who wrote him a son. I think that all the Superman franchise needs is a good, gritty script. Give superman a good story, which means no lex luthor, and things should be okay.

haha speaking of the devil,
I honestly think the superman franchise needs a fresh new take. Because how many times are we going to see Superman fight Lex.
If i am correct I read that Kevin Spacie( i spelled it wrong) might be sign on for the next superman.
and my point again about Singer to Superman was way to much for his plate. with x-men he had the job to introduce a new world of heroes to the masses, which he had trouble with the pressure as a director, and with superman waaaaayyy to much to handle especially since superman is a well know icon.
Here is the way the next superman should come out (DC people)
Invasion of earth
and guess who is leading the invasion
an actuall super powered villain.
(next move is yours DC people)

Superman returns should of been titled super-emotional-man.

Celine Dion's voice in Sups Returns, LOL!!

Singer didn't do X3 in order to do Sups, timing conflict.

I believe Singer is capable of doing the sequel. We should wait and see how Valkyrie turns out (although Cruise is SO tired).
Crusader
Crusader - 12/5/2008, 9:40 AM
The problem with superman returns is they focus so much on special affects and forgot about the action. Superman got into one fight through out the movie and lost. What DC should of did was look at matrix three with the last fight seen. Instead of Keanu Reeves its superman and instead of the agent is ....... ?

I dont know, who would be the best villian. Dark side or Dooms Day?

It's true, the two main reasons that Superman Returns sucked were Dougherty and Harris, the screenwriters. But Singer was so excited like a kid at christmas that he made that script his baby. So he is partly to blame however, like i've always said, the movie could've been a HELL of a lot worse than it was. Thanks to Singer's directing talents, the movie was still very well filmed and still an enjoyable special effects thrill ride. If it was done by UWE BOLL for example, the movie would've had to go directly to BETA for christ's sake.

Either way, we should move on to bigger and better talents, script and direction wise and make room for Mark Millar's trilogy. I believe we're in for a heck of a well deserved reboot!

HANDS DOWN DOOMSDAY!!! His death NEEDS to be on the big screen, i cannot stress this enough!!! But seeing how big of pussies DC/WB are, we might have to settle for DARKSEID which in my opinion, at the moment, is a fair compromise...nothing less!

Yea, Darkseid kicks ass. Awesome villain. Ummm, I think the majority of people have commented enough on how this new Super flick should go. It's just bantering now, over and over again. We all know what we as a collective comic book fan community want to see...UNFORTUNATELY, the suits are not giving it to us, and probably aren't going to. They're just going to continue to rape and pillage the EASIEST superhero to do. Apparently thinking that giving Kal-El a [frick]ing baby was somehow COOL. When it wasn't at all even remotely necessary. The baby should die in the next movie. Piss Supes off, let him go apeshit...Maim people...Do something other than cry like a little BITCH!

I agree DOOMSDAY would be the best villian in the next film they could actually do at least 4 films with Doomsday and Darkseide. I think Darkseide lends better for a trilogy.. there is just so much material. I'd like to see Superman fight Doomsday though.. I think the death of Superman would make a great movie! It might end up being 3 hours long or two movies but it would be awesome. The problem is whatever you do you have to make the movies feel like they can stand on there own. Not like in Matrix Revolutions where you felt like there was no absolution..

I think Singer is a good director but maybe the property was to big for him. Today people want to see hero's with flaws that's why Blade, Xmen, Batman Begins.. all these films are doing well.. I don't think Superman has to turn into an asshole but I do believe there is enough misery here to make him question what he's fighting for and become disenchanted. Superman Returns should have began there.. not I went to see if my Dad's house was still standing and to see if there were any survivors for 6 years and it wasn't so now I'm back.. that doesn't make sense. If he went all that way at least have him come back with something. Show us something other than him falling out after he get's back which made no sense.. I am still upset about the movie..

Bottom line.. Doomsday as the villain and Superman understanding humanity less and less wondering if we are worth saving and enough with Lex Luthor and the love story with Lois Lane. Who give a shit if he's getting laid..

Yea, I got on them about the whole [wiener] censoring things, it does make for some good entertainment sometimes, such as [wiener] Tracy, Game [wiener]s, [wiener]block, han[wiener], [wiener] your weapon, stop [wiener]ing around, poppy[wiener], [wiener]atoo, [wiener]ed and ready, [wiener]head, Emily [wiener]inson, Charles [wiener]ens, etc etc. ALL pretty funny.

One this has always been clear to anyone that has seen the tragedy that befalls our favorite heroes.
The F-king suits, execs, give the freaking directors and writers the freedom they need to bring us what we want.

That was funny scorpio "Superman Returns should have began there.. not I went to see if my Dad's house was still standing and to see if there were any survivors "

I don't know if i read this or if i heard but I think there was a series where superman kind of goes crazy from the presure of been superman. Unless it was the animated series from WB..... That might be interestng to watch but i guess not good for movie never mind...

i still maintain superman returns was a great movie..obviously not what all supes fans wanted to see..but great non the less. but i agree maybe its time for new blood..or at least a new direction. but does anyone else think it would be a shame to lose brandon routh? like the movie or not, he did a bang up job

LEX... president... DEFINITALLY but not the VILLAIN!!!

Brandon Rooth... weither people want to admit it or not... IS Superman! He picked up with EASE where Reeves left off. He pulled off the duality between Supes and Clark which is not that easy to do. Not only that but can you possibly find an actor that resembles Reeves more than ROOTH??? HEEEEELLLLLLL NOOOO!!!! He is like Reeves incarnate! He is perfect where he is and needs to co-star with Christian Bale next! I think most people's judgement about Rooth's performance got clouded by the shitty ass script.

Just get'em a decent costume next time guys, a'right?
Shaman

Here's something about Rooth that people seem to neglect! They say he's a bit of a wuss as Superman... SO WAS REEVES!!! Now imagine him getting royally PISSED!!! After seeing Lois and son dead in his arms(not being able to spin around the Earth once more cause this is a reboot a that idiot sac a shit panzy power never EVER existed as a freakin' possibility!!!). Now wouldn't that be cool? Isin't that what the masses want? To see this preppy wuss make a MAN of himself and mop the floor with the culprate in an all out FURY?

DAMN RIGHT!!!

FOR GOD SAKE!! Its not that hard to make a Superman movie. Keep Singer and just have him follow The Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend, Superman Returns comics. And have doomsday kill the superkid too. Superman is the most famous comic of all time and these jackoffs cant get a film off the ground. I feel like slappin warner bros

richunkleskeletun - 12/5/2008, 9:44 PM
While it seems to be the consensus that nobody liked Superman Returns, I still think Singer did an admirable job. It felt like it belonged in the same series as the original films. Despite the fan response, Singer has made many great films (Who didn't like Usual Suspects?) and I think he has it in him to redeem himself. Of course I doubt Warner Brothers will risk potential millions again so it's all kinda moot. I don't care what kind of ambiguous talk we hear, Singer probably won't be back.
HR
HR - 12/6/2008, 4:57 PM
I know there are alot of Singer fans in here, but I think that he should cut his losses and walk away from directing comic book movies, i will say he does have a good eye for visual effects and how to capture a frame.
That is the only positive thing i can say about a person that i have hated for a while but since my last run in with shaman. I have realized even though Im not a big fan I can say that visually it did get my attention.
and Valkery looks really good, and he should continue to make those types of films and who knows I might just become a fan of his work. But comic book sorry no.

Shaman, I hate to quibble with you, but Superman DID in fact possess the ability to both move planets and travel faster than the speed of light. Both of which would contradict your claim that these powers "...never EVER existed as a freakin' possibility!!!" In fact I'm pretty sure that his powers (in the comic books) weren't reduced to a more practical level until well after the first three Superman films were made. Practical of course being a relative term. I'd have to go through my comics to be sure, but If memory serves, Superman had these powers (and many more that have since been discarded) until John Byrne came on the scene in the late 80's. But I do agree, It would be nice to see a bit more action in some of the movies. however, I don't think Superman would necessarily "mop the floor" with someone as punishment. He'd probably just take them to jail. It's not really in his character to just beat people up.
MarkCassidy

SupermanReturns2
SupermanReturns2 - 12/7/2008, 10:34 AM
They should just do the DOOMSDAY story, kill the kid, kill Richard White, and disfigure Lois, (so a new Lois could be brought in), have Supes beaten to near death, (costume all tattered), leaving Earth in jeopardy, setting up a great cliffhanger for more sequels-and all would be well in the Superman Universe.

See Warner's? It ain't that hard. I'll start writting the script tomorrow.
richunkleskeletun
richunkleskeletun - 12/7/2008, 12:31 PM
The Doomsday story would be the best candidate for a new series if they're considering a reboot. I love the other films (even the bad ones) but the Lex Luthor thing has been done to death. If they want it to be dark like they keep saying, then killing Superman would do it. They can't make the character like Batman no matter what they do, but the villain not being a cheeeseball would be a big step in the right direction. Plus everyone would get all the action they said was lacking in the Superman Returns. How about it movie executives? Topher Grace could play Doomsday. And to even out the mix, Gary Coleman could play Mr. Mxyzptlk.
Inohaku
Inohaku - 12/7/2008, 4:53 PM
Gary Coleman as Mr. Mxyzptlk, that's hillarious! Actually, Coleman has a badboy side to him that might work for this, interesting.

The bad thing about starting from scratch is they have to deal with Lex all over again. With a sequel Lex can take a secondary role (like somehow find a way to bring back Zod and co.) But anyhow do that at a much later sequel, after dealing first with Doomsday or Darkseid or whoever, any Sups villain we haven't seen on the big screen yet will be very much welcomed.

this is killing me...the first superman movie since 1987 and everybody pisses and moans about what singer did and didn't do...whine and cry, piss and moan...as far as the lex overkill - who in the hell were they supposed to have as the bad guy in the first movie in almost 20 years? toyman? please. the death of superman with doomsday? who really wants to see superman get killed? ok, i'll agree the thing with the child was a little weird but hey, it's show business and you gotta have a twist. look, there is nothing like the original. the donner movies are going to be hard to beat. i think bryan singer did a great job. people are on the internet clamoring for a green lantern movie. green lantern is cool, but come on - a movie about the green lantern? we need another superman movie. in 3D. soon. have brandon come back with singer directing - combine lex and bizarro as the bad guys. put kate bosworth in short skirts. hire some blond chick with great big boobs to play miss teschmacher (sorry if that is not the correct spelling). this is superman - the greatest hero of all time. not spidey, not batman, but frickin superman.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/7/2008, 7:03 PM
but all that miss tesmacher stuff has been done to death! thats what we are saying, it needs achange of direction. i dont want to see lex in the next movie..what the hell are they gonna have him do this time? i guarantee you will never see bizarro in a live action movie, his origins are too "out there" ...certainly like the bosworth in a short skirt idea! but seriously, the death of superman is just a fantastic supes story, it needs the big screen treatment. i agree singer should direct, i loved superman returns..but i think he can combine the classic donner feel with some ..dare i say it!..darker themes

Well he can go faster than the speed of light and move planets all he wants, as basic physics and logic will tell you, by accelerating the rotation of the planet by a mere mile, you'd destroy everthing that actually stands on the planet including mountains. So the "Cher-turn back time" power he had in the first movie is idiotic. So DOOMSDAY kills LOIS and SON trying to provoke Superman in Fighting him to the death. Nuff said!

And BAREFOOT, As for your question "who really wants to see Superman die?"... man i hope for your own intelect that your being sarcastic... how'bout every single fan that bought the comic? How bout every single non-fan that bought the comic after hearing about it on the 6 o'clock news? THE FREAKIN 6 O'CLOCK NEWS... DUDE!!!!!! How many superheroes have made the prime time news, not for a movie, not for a tv series but A FREAKIN COMIC BOOK?!?!?!?!?! How'bout NONE!!!!!! DC made enough money with that single storyline to prove that the next Superman movie should be his death. You don't like DOOMSDAY but you like FREAKIN BIZZARRO?????? Are you even serious?!?!?! Shit, even NUCLEAR MAN in Superflop 4 was cooler then MF'ing BIZZARRO!!!!!

DUDE!?!?!?!?!?!?!

i too thought SR was a good solid movie, but like most i agree that it could have had more action similar to the aeroplane scene. the next film, superman should be up against and arch villain, who? i am not sure yet. Lex should be president (with one hand)and there should be a good quota of fighting preferrably all over the planet, in metropolis, in london, over the ice caps etc etc BUT a movie with all fighting and no story will still not make a good film, the back drop has to be a strong story line. The obvious one is that as his earth parents are both now dead his moral guidance is becoming diluted until it slowly dawns on him that he could be living God to people of the earth. this will bring an inner fight to supermans psyche which should make a cracking movie.

I didn't say I didn't like Doomsday. To me, it would just be disappointing to come out with a new Superman movie and well, immediately kill the main character. The Doomsday story was a great one - have it at home myself. My opinion is to first come back with a killer movie. One where Superman kicks someone's ass, throws stuff around, and uses all his superpowers in some shape or form - I don't think Superman even threw a punch in SR. Then do a take on the Doomsday thing the next time. Shit, give us a movie first to to walk out of and say, "Superman is bad-ass" instead of "Well, he's dead." And for the record, Nuclear Man was not cool at all. I was 15 when that came out and thought he was the lamest bad guy I'd ever seen, from the press-on nails to his little short-shorts.
Lex, Bizarro, Doomsday, Darkseid, whoever. Give Superman someone to FIGHT.

I'm getting up there in age myself, bro. I'm tired of waiting too.
The Dark Knight is like the #2 movie of all time. I want a Superman picture that has the success of the Dark Knight, but I don't think making Superman "dark" is going to accomplish that. Having said that, I don't want a "Batman and Robin" cheese - type Superman movie either.
I hope whatever happens, it is successful and brings Superman back to the forefront of comics and the media. Not many people fight for "truth, justice, and the American way" anymore. I loved Superman Returns, but I'll be the first to admit it could have been so much more.
My little girl is 8 years old. She loves Smallville, Superman Returns, and all 4 of the Christopher Reeve movies. I hope someone gives us a new Superman movie before she hits high school!
