"Smallville" Defies the Odds

"Smallville" Defies the Odds

When the CW moved Smallville to Friday nights, pretty much everyone wrote the show off, believing that the ninth season of the show would be the series' last. And for many, this may not have been such a bad thing because in so many ways season eight was a disappointment.

Well, in the overnight ratings for last night's episode, "Crossfire," holds up, then Smallville has risen in the ratings AGAIN, this time to 2.6 million viewers. This represents a continuing increase in viewers, which doesn't even count the number of people watching the show on DVR. As a result, a 10th season is looking more and more likely.
Overall this season, while some of the plotting has been a bit lackluster and there are still continuity and credibility stretches, as far as the characters are concerned, things have been vastly improved, especially with the Lois & Clark dynamic. Almost every scene that Erica Durance and Tom Welling is in together positively crackles.
So what is the feeling about season nine in particular? Feel free to sound off below.

I didn't write it off for Friday nights, but i did for crappy season 8 lol!

Cool news @ ED! Smallville's going from strength to strength!!

Lets hope it keeps that way after all i reckon for the good turn around is because of the response CW got for last season, they knew they messed up with the crappy watered down DOOMSDAY tv version an stuff!!

Their making it up to us! ; D

I say bring it on, and bring on spin offs too!!!

This show is a decent television interpretation of a great character mythology. Things are different and yet, they are the same. Clark Kent is taking an awful long time to get through his training, but his character is developing. The budget will always limit the imagination of the writing crew, but they are showing things on television that no-one has ever seen in Superman outside of the direct to DVD releases by DC. The Justice Society, the Legion, Metallo, The Justice League, the Toymaker, Lex Luther, Lois Lane, Zor-el, Zod...... All we have ever seen in the movies is Zod, who rocked.... Lex Luther... PUHLEESE.... and some atomic nuclear moon man.... so .. yeah.

this is the best season yet! last night's episode was great! the kiss was surprising for sure, speedy was hot,
(and is it just me or is "tess" getting hotter with each episode?) also oliver was shirt-less for almost the whole episode so im sure that was great for the ladies. absolutly NO complaints for this season.( now all we need is to see lex re-appear, and this season will be perfect), not to mention the justice society episode coming up and next week we finally get to see JOR-EL in person! nothing but good things to come!

I wanna see it make it to ten. Plus seeing the two of them kiss last night, without it being some kind of deux a machina crap, was awesome. I just hope they dont dick around with the two of them like they did with him and Lame-a I mean...Lana!

Season 9 has been pretty good so far although this Zod thing feels like its going the same was as the Doomsday storyline did...disappointment! :(

Still, at least we've had a costume of sorts and some decent cameos here and there - but when the [frick] is he finally going to fly!?!

I am kind of suprised that Supernatural is now beating Smallville in the ratings though! The latest episode pulled in 2.9 million viewers! (sorry LEE, lol!)

At least Lois doesn't get hit over the head every week like Lana did. Lana should be a vegetable by now.

I watched a few shows this season trying to determine whether I wanted to see more, usually I wait for the last few episodes leading to the finale. But I've been pleasantly surprise so far. I think now that the Clark and Lois relationship thing is starting to happen, it added a little life to the show.

joshw24, the real reason Supernatural is beating Smallville is that it remains in its Thursday timeslot. The fact that Smallville is airing on Fridays at 8 -- oftentimes considered a deathslot -- is impressive, espcially since the numbers seem to tick up with every episode. Whatever the feelings about the show, it definitely has a large audience that continues to support it.

brianj22: I agree with a lot of your points but im not 100% convinced that they've fixed the show completely...its a lot better but theres a lot that still needs to be improved on IMO! Your finale idea sounds awesome though! :)
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/31/2009, 1:26 PM
EdGross: I didnt know that about the whole timeslot thing - I live in the UK and as neither show is normally on until months after you guys see it, I watch both online (though i also watch them on TV when they do finally come here!)

I guess by this point both shows are relying on their respective fan bases, as I read somewhere that Supernatural's ratings have dropped since last season as well!

Also, the competition on Thursday night has gotten pretty fierce.

I think Supernatural lost ratings because of the constant bickering between Sam and Dean. They lost the sense of family they shared in the few two seasons. But slowly they're getting back on track and working well together again. I think this will eventually mean a spike in ratings once old fans get wind of this.

Wow.....it's good to see all the love for SMALLVILLE! They have done a better job in every aspect of the show so far this year which is, quite frankly, VERY suprising. I had all but written off the new producers, but it seems they are finally getting their head out of their @sses!

Last nights ep was AWESOME. They way CLARK saved LOIS & OLIVER was sick, and I loved how he paused in front of OLIVER so he would know just how lucky he was to be saved........SICK!!!!

@BRIANJ22-

They did indeed say that the LEGION ep would be a 2-part episode, don't think it's the finale tho. I wonder what they are saving for that....???
TheTruth
TheTruth - 10/31/2009, 1:41 PM
The scene in the last episode, where Clark stops the machine gun bullets and than catches that last bullet centimeters before it hit Ollie's eye was vintage hero stuff.

stopdropandroll: Yeah, that actually ruined Season 4 for me...still, as you said things are back on track now so it can hopefully only get better from here! The lates episode with old Dean was hilarious!

EdGross - 10/31/2009, 2:46 PM
Earlier somebody mentioned that were expecting him to be in the full costume. I read an interview with Kelly Souders (executive producer) in which she said the costume would not be making an appearance -- whether or not it's on Clark -- until the very end of the series because as far as they're concerned, it's that moment when he becomes Superman and the show is no longer solely about Clark Kent.

honestly with how messy the series was before the new poroducers got on board, its not surprising that season 8 was such a mess. Smallville is a completely different show since the good ol days of Jeph "Red Hulk" Loeb was a consulting producer. and it honestly gets better every season. Season 8 was looking like that and then Lana showed up and Doomsday sucked. But It was all neccesary so the show could become a much better "Superman" show. This is a great show, if only we could get some of the people who watch Boob Whisperer, I mean Ghost Whisperer to watch Smallville.

All the episodes of Smallville have rocked so far! I really really hope they bring back Brian Autin Green as Metallo cause as everyone saw...HE WAS METALLO. Keeping Toyman around as a part of Tess's plans was very cool I just hope they use him more later in the season. Not sure what to think of the gossip girl reject that is Tess's sidekick, doesn't seem to fit in, I get the feeling that something may start brewing between him and Chloe, YUCK, not needed. Great to see Lois and Clark kiss and finally Zod shows up for something useful. This season has been a vast improvement over all the previous 8 and lets hope we see at least season 10.

Yeah, Smallville has improved so much it's a shock to
me too! I don't know what the producers did during the
break but somehow they've pulled their heads so far out
of their butts they can actually see clearly again! :D

The stuff with Clark saving Lois and Ollie and showing
Ollie he did it was big time movie stuff! Wow, that
really rocked my socks! The FX was simply amazing! And
the story was highly propelled along with some of the
strongest acting and scripting I've ever seen on this show!

As for Supernatural they are back on track too and
thursday night's epi was so funny it made my sides ache!
Chad Everett did a wonderful job playing the old Dean!

Nine seasons is enough. The show is on DVD and I'm losing my mind that they both cost too much money. They should lower the prices because it's ridiculous to spend $60 per season.
