Superman: Legacy director James Gunn recently announced that early pre-production is officially underway on his DCU reboot, and while it will likely be another while before our new Man of Steel is introduced to the DC faithful, it sounds like the filmmaker might be zeroing in on a shortlist.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Gunn expressed his excitement about the "incredible choices" in contention to take over the iconic role.
Gunn didn't mention any names, of course, but he did previously give us some idea of the type of actor he's looking for. Reports suggest that this latest big-screen take on Supes is going to be quite a bit younger than previous iterations of the character (in the 22-26 age-range), and the GOTG Vol. 3 director has indicated that he'd prefer to cast an unknown (or at least, not a major star).
Right now, all we really know about the reboot is that it's set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and will focus on the early days of the character. Gunn has confirmed that Jimmy Olsen will feature, and we'd be very surprised if fellow Superman regulars Lois Lane and Lex Luthor didn't join him.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
