SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director Shares Art Depicting Isabela Merced As Hawkgirl & Nathan Fillion As Green Lantern

Superman: Legacy director James Gunn recently took to Instagram to share some artwork depicting Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mr. Terrific, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 filmmaker has now followed suit with two of the other DC Characters that'll be making their big-screen debut in the upcoming DCU reboot.

This artwork spotlights Hawkgirl, who will be played by Dora the Explorer and Transformers: The Last Knight actress Isabela Merced, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner, who will be played by Serenity and The Suicide Squad actor Nathan Fillion.

There was speculation that the Mr. Terrific art might be an official concept design, but we now know that these are actually fan-made pieces from Davi Alves (you'll also find his take on Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho below). Still, if Gunn is highlighting these images, they may give us some idea of the looks he has in mind for these characters.

We're still not sure exactly how these heroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman's dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these four characters will be his "super friends." Whether they'll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Superman: Legacy will also star David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Casting is currently underway for Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, and now that the WGA strikes has come to an end, announcements may be forthcoming.

The Righteous Gemstones actor Skyler Gisondo was recently rumored to be a "top choice" to play Jimmy, while brothers Alexander and Bill Skarsgård are said to have tested for Luthor along with one-time Superman candidate Nicholas Hoult. Gunn has yet to weigh in on any of these reports, however.

Barring any delays, production is scheduled to commence next January.

Is the DCU Argentina even an official account or just an account that posts stuff without zero oversight? Either way, I wouldn't really consider it as Gunn posting it.

Anyway, as castings I like these a lot. Really don't mind it that the DCU, even if it's new, is already populated by superheroes before Superman makes his debut.

@bkmeijer1 - Gunn has said this isn’t an origin story so I can see it being akin to the Batman recently where Clark is still figuring himself out as a hero and it is still the early years.

@TheVisionary25 - I honestly like that a lot more than an origin story. I for one am actually excited to see him interact with other superheroes and how that affects his journey

Awesome! But I thought this film was about Superman?

@Forthas - No no no, it's "with Superman" not "about Superman". A slight change in prepositions can make all the difference in the world so you gotta watch those sneaky bastards.

@StSteven - I see...kind of like - we are rebooting the DC films...but not really if you add the words "in some instances!"
I get it now. Never thought I would need a law degree to understand the direction of the DCU...but here we are.

@Forthas - Yep. And like "Legal-eze" I believe the proper term here that we should all use moving forward is "DC-eze". Example:

English: "We're rebooting the DCU with a fresh start."
DC-eze: "Well, it's actually going to be more of a soft reboot mixed with a "kinda-boot", a "pre-boot", and a "side-boot". We're not entirely sure what those last three terms mean at this point, but we're pretty sure it's how you describe completely recasting and restarting some of the main characters that we feel we completely f**ked up while carrying over the characters and their actors that we're pretty sure we didn't f**k up and possibly carrying over characters and actors that we might have f**ked up. Oh, and recasting previous actors into new roles in the new-ish universe."

Got it? Someone needs to start a translation guide here. That'll help clear up any confusion in the future. Maybe. Probably not.

This is super underwhelming! I feel like this Superman Legacy is going to have the same tone as James Gunn’s Suicide Squad.

I thought part of the excitement for the next Superman movie (with or without Cavill) was him not having to share the spotlight with other heroes. With Bvs, Snyder had to sort of take a shortcut, by having Gotham and Metropolis be next to each other, so Batman could be included. Even Diana showing up, was a bit underwritten. It's a weird way to reboot Superman. "Hey audience, look at all the help he has. Superfriends unite!"

Isabela Merced seems a bit too young imo for Hawkgirl but she’s still good…

So far , so good with the cast!!.

Fillion always came off as more Hal Jordan than anything.

@ModHaterSLADE - agreed, while he didn’t get much to do in the animated new 52 movies, he did a solid job as Hal Jordan.
