Whether due to the recent legal wranglings over the rights to Superman, or whether due to the lackluster box office results of Superman Returns, DC Entertainment appears to be giving up on making another Superman movie.

MTV spoke with DC Entertainment head honcho Diane Nelson and she said:

"We actually don't have any current plans for Superman.

"We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."

But, aren't they going to lose the Superman rights in a couple of years?

Superman Returns killed the franchise.

so if they lose the rights to make superman movies, are we going to see a justice league movie without supes?? lol, that would be funny. especially since nolan's batman will never be in a justice league movie. oh man, no one will ever see a justice league movie, lol.

@TheUnknown: That's right! If they don't make a new Superman movie by 2012, they lose the rights to do so! Considering how long it takes to make an FX-driven superhero movie, it's unlikely we'll ever see another Superman from DC!

I reckon they will change their mind before 2012! ; )

@ LEEE

they would have to START making a superman movie, like tomorrow, for it to be out in 2012. they probably just know that the world is going to end by then, so they want to spend their money on something better...like hookers and fire trucks

That sucks. But maybe by the time they get around to a JLA movie, the bad taste of Superman Returns will be out of everyone's mouth and people will be excited to see him on the big screen again. I'm actually one of the few people that liked Superman Returns but we don't necessarily need another stand-alone Superman movie before they do a Justice League movie. I mean, it's not like anyone over 3 yrs old is unaware of who Superman is.

The scary thing is, what if they do lose the rights and the owners make a deal with Fox or some other studio? Just imagine a Brett Ratner-directed Superman...

@ matches

if they don't make a superman movie, they lose the rights, therefore, superman won't be able to be in a JLA movie...

This translates into "We want to do a Superman movie but we just don't have a clue on how to carry on with him".

Personally, there is nothing beyond repair from Superman Returns. Kill off the kid, this will please fans and provide a massively emotional story for Supes to deal with.

Carry on or reboot? I don't care! Just make a choice and make it quick! Then do the movie! It's that simple! Half the people on this site have come up with great story lines for both continuing and rebooting so you can't tell me a group of professionals can't come up with something!

@ sirprize

for sure man, i thought that was horrible too. but the stalking and using his powers to spy on lois just goes against everything superman's character stands for.

but your right, and it was stupid that he just flew into space for like 30 seconds and all of a sudden he's juicin' again. and correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't it weaken him to even be AROUND it, much less to be touching it??

Yes, everyone we are all disapointed about this, but the best thing to do is forget Superman Returns, pretend it never happend and say to yourself: "Superman 2(christopher Reeve) was the last Superman film, no more exist." It helps deal with the pain and sadness, it helped me with last Indy film which was awful.

Sorry sirprize, but that sort of thing happens in movies all the time. Its just a last ditch act of heroism that defies all the odds to save the world and i actually liked it. First off, we see Supes supercharge himself with the sun to his maximum strength and second..it did kill him! Yeah he comes back to life but whadayya want its a Superhero movie, Supes always comes back to life in the comics too. I am also one of the few(there seems to be a lot of people saying this so maybe we are not so few!) that liked Supes Returns. Could it have used more action? Sure, and maybe no Krypto kid would have been nice but nothings perfect.

And CDM, he was not "stalking" Lois, he was jealous. That scene was to show him wrestling with his human side which he tries to keep in check, but even he is not above petty jealousy. It actually happens in the comics quite a few times!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

NO MORE WEAK, BONY, PASSIVE, SUPERMAN MOVIES!

THANK YOU!!!

The Cartoons portray him BETTER anyway.

That movie was an Embarrassment to SuperMan.
(And he isn't even one of my favorites.)

Now the NEXT TIME they finally decide to do a SuperMan Move...GET A REAL, STRONG, MAN!!!!

That last guy looked like Micheal Phelps Half Brother.
(from San Francisco)

Get a REAL MANLY MAN and have him actually FIGHT A VILLAN.... (Glad I didn't watch that Crap)

Hey guys, Im with ya! That was my major problem with the movie too. But people pick apart all of the other emotional and phychological aspects of the movie which, while there was too much of, was still done very well. If Singer had of even taken a quarter of the talky stuff out and replaced it with more action it would have been great. But even as it is there is quite a bit of action in the movie. Well, theres the plane scene, the bullet in the eye bit and the ending when hes flying around stopping all the fires and shit, i thought that was all cool. The main problem is that because Lex was the only villain(again!) it meant no punch ups. I really think Singer could make another movie with a super villain and more action and the fans would love it. Maybe recast Lois though...

They JUST formed this new DC section of entertainment to compete with Marvel, and will likely have a Clark Kent cameo in GL. They are just trying to figure out their next move and don't have anything concrete to give out. This is fine.

Bamf7 - 9/15/2009, 11:49 AM
Ror - I agree. Recast Lois! I didn't think SR was that bad, and by typical movie standards it was a success. Us fans just geek out a little too much, and Superman started the whole freakin' superhero genre...so we have high standards. Mark my words...they will do something with the franchise.

Axl@ I agree 100%. I've said that exact thing a million times on here. Only in Hollywood could a movie make 400 million and be considered lackluster box office. Yet gijoe or terminator make 300 million and they get sequels greenlit immediately. Superman definitely made more of a profit than others that get sequels so it makes no sense.
