Alan Ritchson (Raphael) Talks NINJA TURTLES

THR caught up with the former Smallville actor at the MTV awards last night and quizzed him about his role in the upcoming TMNT reboot. Ritchson defends the movie's "reputation", and discusses working with Megan Fox, who plays April O'Neil.

Let's be honest, there probably isn't a single person -- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan or otherwise -- that's too crazy about what they've heard so far about the upcoming Michael Bay produced reboot, and I can't say I blame them. But we can be very fond of writing off movies before we've so much as seen any footage from them around these parts -- is it possible we're being too harsh? Former Aquaman Alan Ritchson certainly thinks so.

"The frustrating thing for me since I've signed on is that you hear that it's already got a reputation. I think people assume they know what it's going to be about, and those people are wrong. The assumptions, everything you read online is wrong. You want to tell everybody how great it is, and you can't really say why, but it is."

The Jonathan Liebesman directed movie recently began shooting in New York, and Ritchson describes a little of what the experience has been like for him so far, while hinting that there will be scenes involving only Raphael and April. "We're running around Manhattan, me and Megan Fox, her looking wonderful and me looking like some kind of ant with cameras all over my face, he tells THR. "We're learning a lot of the fight choreography. We've got these unbelievable stunt trainers that work us every day to the bone. It's been a great process."

i am actually looking forward to what they are working on. In my opinion action movies and the tech involved has just gotten progressively better.

I was a HUGE tmnt fan growing up. Had all the toys, games and loved the cartoon series and old live action movies.

People need to chill and give this a fair chance before they just write it off

I have seen two of Liebesman's films (Darknes Falls and Battle:LA) and they were both awful. I have no hope he will turn out a good product.

As for Bay, well, I've already spoken about my dislike for his as a director and human being.

I know this a TMNT thread but when people bring up Transformers movie franchise I have a question: What was it that you didnt get out of those movies? Not talkin sh!t but for the people who dont like Bay, what is that you expected that u didnt get?!? I admit T2 was lacking a bit but 1 and 3?! Got way more quality in Rise of the Fallen than both GI Joe movies put together. Please someone let me know if you have a hate for these movies. Im curious to hear.

I love the first movie! This version was darker and gritty but still kiddish. The shredder was on point, even before fighting he had an on-screen presence that was just beast mode. It just carries over really well. The second not as much, loved Kino's foot initiation scene with Raph and the bells.

If the new movie is not that good ill be cool because Ill always have the the original movie. Probably what people said about Burton's Batman when Schumacher plotted the Dark Knight's cinematic demise!! muhaha muhaha

This has me psyched. I loved TMNT as a kid. And the latest cartoon is fantastic...I watch it with my kid regularly. I hope the movie rocks. If you've never been into the turtles and want to know what's up, catch the cartoon. It's still on it's first season.

Once again.......How can Alan Ritchinson say everything we read online was "wrong" when Michael Bay and Paramount admitted that the crappy leaked script was real? Also it was dated only as far back as 2012 when Applebaum and Nemec wrote the draft. The latest writers to work on it.

Clearly they have done an overhaul on the script? I too am sick of peoples overreaction to this film. All we know so far is some of the casting and we have a leaked script from a year and a half ago. I am keeping positive until trailers come out, then I will make my mind up.

@BboiBlack

Because the Turtle franchise is totally not viable as is?

The show had a successful run from the 80's into the 90's, another successful cartoon series in the early 2000's and the Nickelodeon show hasn't been renewed for 3 seasons minimal because of it's incredible success?

The Turtle figures from the new series were one of the top selling toys this past year, with very few acting as peg warmers. The newest comic series gets rave reviews...

Yup...the Turtle franchise is TOTALLY not viable on it's own without Michael Bay's help...

Fox should take a brief Euro-trip to London. Perhaps a bit of training by master thespians would help revamp her rep.

I haven't seen much of Megan Fox granted, but I haven't seen a movie with her in it where she brought anything special to the story other than eye candy. Did she sell her soul to Bay or something?

@Welmanshire: I have a feeling that the script changes are marginal at best...
Welmanshire
Welmanshire - 4/15/2013, 10:37 PM
@sweetre15 I don't know. It has been a year and a half since that draft was finished. Bay has said that script has since been changed. Having Alan Richardson state that "The assumptions, everything you read online is wrong." sort of makes me think that there have been more than marginal changes. Clearly, due to some of the locations they have shot on there are still elements\scenes of that leaked draft in the final product though. We can only wait and see.
