First Full TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Review Reveals New Origins

The Wrap have posted their review of the upcoming TMNT movie, and given away the rebooted origins of the heroes in a half-shell and their rodent Sensei Splinter in the process. With the film coming out very soon you may not want to click on, but if you do, SPOILER WARNING obviously.

Fans have known (and made it very clear that they were not best pleased) about a new origin story for the awesome foursome since very early on in the movie's production. First it was rumored that they were going to be aliens, but even after that was shot down the first trailer made it very clear that we were in for a different telling. In that trailer, Eric Sachs (William Fichtner) seems to suggest that it was he and April O'Neil's (Megan Fox) father that were responsible for the creation of the four turtles, and in their review of the movie, The Wrap confirm as much..with a few extra revelations.

"In this telling, it turns out they were once April's pets, part of an experiment being conducted by her scientist father alongside industry mogul Eric Sachs (William Fichtner). During the mysterious fire that cost her father his life, young April set the four turtles and a rat free in the sewers, where they grew up into bi-pedal mutant creatures who studied the ways of the ninja."

Hmmm. So they bought a copy of "Teach Yourself Ninjitsu" then? Or, will they go with the IDW comic series' reincarnation angle? I haven't seen the movie yet so my concerns might be unfounded, but I'm not sure I like the sounds of that. Anyway, in the rest of their review (link below) The Wrap make mention of a few laughs and thrilling action sequences, but overall don't sound very positive about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at all. But it also doesn't sound like they were fans to begin with, so let's wait and see what Nate has to say about it a bit later on! more reviews should start coming in soon too, so we'll get a better idea of the general consensus.

Don't really care about new origins or not...because, I'm still buzzed by a triple viewing of GotG this past weekend!

...and please, no 'raped' my childhood comments ;)

I work in the media, & I was told by Paramount that the embargo lifts on the 8th. However, the above statement of the origin is true, but...

April's dad's death has two different stories...at least in the press screening I went to. One is where Eric kills him & the other is where be burns in a fire. Don't even let me get started on the horrible ending.

I could live with the turtles part because it still maintains their basic origin story of pets lost in the sewer who were mutated. It's the Splinter part that bothers me if it means he has no backstory/personal vendetta with Shredder and is not from Japan.

INB4 every one starts complaining that it doesn't match their precious childhood. Inb4 "bay raped my childhood" comments from people who have never picked up a TMNT Comic book in their lives.

Instead of only watching the TMNT live action trilogy from the late 80s, try reading some of the comic books or watching some of the other TV series that wasn't the 80s series.

So tired of nostalgia hags ruining everything for modern audiences.

It's true that April naming the turtles etc has been used in some tellings, but I was never a fan. Give me the Oruku Saki/Hamato Yoshi classic any day..and I;d much prefer if Splinter was actually Yoshi and not his pet rat. But hey, I'm not gonna dismiss the movie over those things. We'll see.

This sounds fine. Gives them a better connection to April.
NYCGEEK
NYCGEEK - 8/4/2014, 5:39 AM
By the way, April basically made the turtles what they are.

1. She fed them pizza when they were ordinary turtles.
2. She named them.
3. She named Splinter.

Well, with that "Legend of the Yokai" trailer, it's safe to assume that they're might be using the reincarnation aspect of the IDW origin.

I don't really care if the origin is different. Every new incarnation of TMNT has done that. Frankly they should do that. The only thing that makes or breaks their origin is whether or not they wsy they learned martial arts makes sense. And please don't come at me with "'makes sense' lol in a movie about mutated talking turtles smh". If you're asking the audience to accept the premise of giant bipedal taking turtles then it behooves you to make the other stuff somewhat believable otherwise you may as well say its all magic and we're not explaining it. For example, Splinter being a former martial arts master made a little more sense to me than Splinter being the former pet of a martial arts master. So if the manner in which they learn martial arts is at least somewhat believable then where they came from doesn't really matter to me - I'd even be ok with aliens.

@Buggy89 Yea what's wrong with change these so called fans claim they know a lot about the the turtles origins but frankly they don't know jack shit people still think they're aliens like wtf read more comic books people I love they went this route also for people complaining about Splinters origin Read idw then watch the 2003 cartoon boom there you go

It's hardly a big deal, but I never care for the Hollywood idea of how small the narrative world of a story should be... Everyone important has to be tied together in their backstory. I honestly don't think it strengthens concepts, I think it makes then insular. Kids can't imagine that they could have been the one to be bitten by the radioactive spider and become a hero, or discover the existence of mutant ninjas living in the city and become their closest confidant and ally, all because they themselves don't have the elaborate backstory (and mad scientist father) necessary for it to happen to them.

In any event, if they really are trying to hold an embargo on reviews until the 8th, then they must think this film is a real stinker.

A buddy of mine says he saw an early screening of it. He loved Transformers and is an Amazing Spider-Man fan. He liked the new TMNT, but told me I probably won't.

It's a second run dollar matinee at best.

oh god, this is just a meaningless and lazy way to connect April to the turtles. No good storytelling here.

For those who've never read any of the older or newer comics, THIS origin story isn't too far removed from that of the comics.

I much prefer the newer origin they use in the cartoon and IDW series where they are lab animals for TCRI. It just makes a ton of sense and makes it original instead of a satire of Daredevil.

Now, I like some of Bay's movies. Bad Boys 1 & 2, The Rock, Pain & Gain... Even Mystery Men:

The thing is, he shouldn't be allowed to do films based on things. Pearl Harbor. The Transformers series. Based on his track record in this regard and on the footage I have seen from this film, I will be skipping it in theaters. Things are coming up Guardians again this weekend for me!
