POLL/DISCUSSION: First TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Teaser

We got our first glimpse of the rebooted heroes in a half-shell in action yesterday when the teaser trailer for Jonathan Liebsman's TMNT hit. The reaction from both casual fans and die-hard Turtles purists was...mixed. But are we being too harsh? Click on to have your say.

We had seen the action figures, we'd heard about the changes to certain major characters, and we'd even had a full breakdown of the trailer before we saw it yesterday morning -- but still, that first teaser for the Michael Bay produced TMNT reboot seemed to leave many fans a bit shell-shocked.

Of course a brief teaser isn't much to judge anything on, but here are the things that seem to have irked fans the most: Shredder (a white dude named Erich Sachs) infers that he, along with April O'Neil's father, was responsible for the creation of the Turtles. Honestly, we don't know for certain that's what he meant. We know that previous incarnations of the Shredder (with the help of some mutagen) created various mutant henchmen such as Bebop and Rocksteady -- perhaps this is what he was referring to? We know those characters aren't in the movie but what I'm saying is he needn't have been talking about the Turtles specifically. But IF he is, then yeah that's a pretty major alteration. I mean where does Splinter come in? We know he's in the movie, but all of this points to a cigar chomping Brooklyn sewer rat comic relief sidekick type...can you imagine?

The other big gripe is the designs of the turtles themselves. To be blunt, they're [frick]ing huge. Raph, Donny, Mikey and Leo are usually portrayed as being slightly shorter than a human, and definitely less bulky and imposing looking. This does help when you're, ya know, a ninja! Also, their faces are just...weird looking. I'm not sure if it's the nostrils or the too-human eyes, but something looks off.

Now obviously if you're not too bothered about changes to canon then none of that will phase you; so let's look at some of the positives that can be taken from the trailer. Tonally, it's not bad. The '80s cartoon was pretty light and fluffy, but don't forget that the original comics were considerable more serious and a whole lot darker so it's only right that we should see a bit of that reflected here. Plus as corny as the mask gag at the end is, well, that IS pure Michelangelo! Can we assume that they've at least nailed the distinct personalities of the awesome foursome?

Like I said, a brief teaser isn't much to go on but based on that alone, what do you think? Vote away, then leave your thoughts in the usual place.

I thought about it last night and you know what

I don't mind a new origin story and having something new

As long as they go down the road of making as many characters as they had toys :)

I liked it, for a first trailer it isn't bad. You should probably move this to features, because it isn't news.

Overall I had mixed feelings about the trailer. On one hand I don't particularly like the way the turtles look (especially Michelangelo) on the other I really like who they got to play Shredder I think people will be surprised with his interpretation of Shredder. I don't know how to feel about this movie.

My only real gripe is the look of the turtles and that there is no Oroku Saki.

The turtles are too big. And they oddly look like a live action Shrek. The turtles were always smaller in the 5-5.5 ft range, so seeing them at 7ft and 300lbs is odd.

I don't like the background that Shredder created them and that all of the turtles, splinter, April and Shredder are that closely connected, but I understand the want for the tweaks in back story.

I voted meh because it didn't show much. The action looks like it will be good, but the look is a bummer and so is white Shredder. Plus the end is a pretty good representation of Michaelangelo

thoughts:

1) where the f*ck is Splinter?
2) I'd rather have an Utrom Shredder than a "white guy" shredder
3) "Ninja" implies stealth. These behemoths seem the opposite of stealth. Humvees ae turned into kindling in their wake, how are any human sized opponents supposed to pose a threat????
4) No way am I ever gonna like these new designs

still, that last bit was Mikey gold!

I actually keep thinking about it and having oroku saki being splinter could make a lot of sense

then if shredder created the turtles it would make sense in creating a feud between splinter and shredder

now I am kinda hoping that oroku saki is splinter

ahaha I sold myself on that idea :)

Never understand when people who weren't fans of something comment on something they weren't or aren't a fan of, but, I digress.

NOTHING will be better than TMNT I or II, NONE!

However, from the trailer alone so far, I will say this does already look better than the abomination that was TMNT III & the 2007 CGI movie (Which was an OK movie).

Whilst I didn't like the sound of the change in story upon hearing it & didn't like how they tried to give each individual Turtle their own look by adding what I felt at the time were unnecessary things to them...... Not gonna lie, the Trailer actually looks pretty good.

However, I Still really don't like & despise the Foot Soldiers look & hate that they use Guns instead of traditional martial artist weapons, also, the Turtles are a tad too big IMO & the less said about their Noses the better, but other than those negative factors, I now feel pretty confident this is actually going to be an OK to Good movie. It doesn't have to be Avengers, Dark Knight or Cap, it just needs to be entertaining & so far it looks like it could be an entertaining Turtles flick besides the aesthetics.

Now I'm interested to know why William / Shredder is going to go from
being against crime to end up fighting the Turtles seeing as he is now their creator in this origin & they are some what what you can label crime fighters.

Also, will be interesting how Splinter's origin / creation will be explained in this movie & who is in charge of the Foot Soldiers in the first place if not by Shredder to begin with.

Some aspects now are all quite intriguing.

Actually looking forward to seeing this movie more now after that, but still think some changes made weren't necessary & think that some changes in look / appearance of the Turtles & Foot Soldiers could be tweaked / improved upon. Turtles definitely don't need the Human or Semi Human looking Noses, that's what seems to be giving them the Shrek look. The Turtles heads would be far better without those Noses. Also, the Turtles are a tad too Big & the Shells raised a little higher than they should be. The Foot need to have the cartoon look (either 80's or 2003 version) or something similar to TMNT I & II. Those 300 looking masks & clothing they're in now just don't say Foot Soldiers to me.

I still think practical suits with people inside are better than motion capture & CGI when it comes to making Turtles movies, that's just my opinion.

Some people act like the 80s and 90s versions were written by Kurt Vonnegut. This franchise has always been garbage, it just appeals when you're 10 years old. This version will be stupid, and still probably the best yet. Why is that surprising?
