Original THE CROW Director Denounces Remake As Trailer Reaches 88,000 Dislikes On YouTube

Lionsgste released the first trailer for its upcoming re-adaptation of The Crow last week, and the response was decidedly... mixed.

Though some were more willing than others to give an updated take on the material a chance, it's fair to say that the majority of fans took issue with the decision to pretty much ignore the moody, Gothic tone of the '90s film (that song choice was just flat out bizarre) in favor of what basically came across as a generic supernatural action movie.

Alex Proyas, who helmed the original film, has previously shared his not-so enthusiastic thoughts on the remake, and has now returned to social media to comment on the trailer receiving over 50,000 dislikes on YouTube after being online for one day (that number has since risen to 88,000).

"I really don't get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker's work," the director began. "And I'm certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan's response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That's how it should remain. The sheer amount of dislikes on The Crow remake's trailer might be a bad sign for how the movie will perform."

Have another look at the trailer below.

Rochelle Davis, who played a young girl named Sarah who was cared for by Draven (Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) before they were murdered in the original film, recently spoke with TMZ about the first promo images, and her initial reaction was, "Yuck."

Davis made it clear that she has no issues with Skarsgård's casting or acting ability, but feels his look fails to "capture the essence of Eric Draven, who's supposed to be a good man with a good soul." Davis described this version as "dingy, dirty, and grungy," suggesting that he looks more like the "villains he should be fighting than the titular character."

The actress also took issue with the new movie's lack of diversity, and feels that "anyone other than a straight white male" would have been a better casting choice, adding that Lionsgate maybe should have gone out of their way to cast someone who more closely resembles Lee out of respect.

The synopsis reads: "Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right."

The movie will also star Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. Zach Baylin and Will Schneider penned the script.

The new take on The Crow will hit theaters on June 7, 2024.

Cant believe they didnt learn anything from Leto Joker. They really hate fandoms in hollywood. Remember the slick diss towards snyder fans in the Barbie movie? They pay attention

I understand all the about the 'look' but the original movie and it's sequels weren't that great either, it's more just that it's tied to Lee's legacy.

This new one for what it's worth may be an entertaining watch, not one i'll be paying for, but a watch none the less.

@UniqNo - I respectfully disagree.
It's not just about Lee.

This was a comic film that took a HUGE chance in it's time and it worked all around. Yes, the sequels sucked. The original is a good, but very brutal story.

@lazlodaytona - The director makes it about Lee and his legacy. It's not a bad movie, but it's not great. Ok i understand about the cult following etc, but i'd imagine if Lee survived it would not have had such reverence. Kind of the same thing for TDK with Ledger's performance, as good as it was.

The face tattoos aside, this looks good. I think the idea that you cant make more movies because an actor died is ridiculous. I loved both heath Ledger as Joker and Chadwick as Black Panther, but the characters transcend the actors people.

Everyone seems so interested in what the director of the ‘94 film thinks. If you read the comic, even the ‘94 film wasn’t that faithful. How about let’s ask James O’Barr what HE thinks of the trailer. I loved the comic. I loved the Lee version. Didn’t care for the sequels/interpretations. This one looks pretty good. I wasn’t expecting a shot for shot remake of the comic. It’s been 35 years. It’s ok to update the source material. Bill Skarsgard goes all in on everything he does. I’m going to go see it. No one ever seems to like any trailer or ‘first look’ of anything anymore. What does it really matter at this point? People talked so much shit when they heard Heath Ledger would be the Joker and that was before even a single frame of the film had been shot. SMH

The sad thing here is that all they had to do was continue the line of Crow follow ups by letting this be it's own thing instead of recycling/trashing the original film. Simple and effective. Or even use a new motivation for revenge as a new plot driven directive other than the soulmate route. Simple solution. The sequels did it.

But NOPE.

Hollywood today is on a bender for remaking favorites just to groom and manipulate people into accepting their awful decisions just to trick the audience back into theaters.

@TheLight - If they could just ADR the surnames, this could be a legacy sequel. And it would probably be better received.

It will fail because it's remaking the beloved original. One fatal mistake.

Can't they ugly sonic this thing?
