Original THE CROW Director Denounces Remake As Trailer Reaches 88,000 Dislikes On YouTube

As the first trailer for Lionsgate's remake of The Crow reaches 88,000 dislikes on YouTube, the director of the original '90s adaptation has once again shared his thoughts on social media...

Lionsgste released the first trailer for its upcoming re-adaptation of The Crow last week, and the response was decidedly... mixed.

Though some were more willing than others to give an updated take on the material a chance, it's fair to say that the majority of fans took issue with the decision to pretty much ignore the moody, Gothic tone of the '90s film (that song choice was just flat out bizarre) in favor of what basically came across as a generic supernatural action movie.

Alex Proyas, who helmed the original film, has previously shared his not-so enthusiastic thoughts on the remake, and has now returned to social media to comment on the trailer receiving over 50,000 dislikes on YouTube after being online for one day (that number has since risen to 88,000).

"I really don't get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker's work," the director began. "And I'm certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan's response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That's how it should remain. The sheer amount of dislikes on The Crow remake's trailer might be a bad sign for how the movie will perform."

Have another look at the trailer below.

Rochelle Davis, who played a young girl named Sarah who was cared for by Draven (Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) before they were murdered in the original film, recently spoke with TMZ about the first promo images, and her initial reaction was, "Yuck."

Davis made it clear that she has no issues with Skarsgård's casting or acting ability, but feels his look fails to "capture the essence of Eric Draven, who's supposed to be a good man with a good soul." Davis described this version as "dingy, dirty, and grungy," suggesting that he looks more like the "villains he should be fighting than the titular character."

The actress also took issue with the new movie's lack of diversity, and feels that "anyone other than a straight white male" would have been a better casting choice, adding that Lionsgate maybe should have gone out of their way to cast someone who more closely resembles Lee out of respect.

The synopsis reads: "Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right."

The movie will also star Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. Zach Baylin and Will Schneider penned the script.

The new take on The Crow will hit theaters on June 7, 2024.

I also don't like the new design of the character. I tried to go back and watch the original couple nights ago. I made about 45 minutes in. It's really not a very good movie.

@Izaizaiza - It's a cult classic.

@marvel72 - I mean, it has its own bad movie charm. I saw it in the theater when it was new, and enjoyed it well enough... But it was pretty forgettable. Not to sound like a cynical dick (too late), but if Lee hadn't died on set, I doubt we'd still be talking about that film

@Izaizaiza - I think the hate on this remake is exceptional, cause the original is no masterpiece by any means. But because it's a beloved movie there is next to no appealing to the fanbase with any sort of remake.

The film is epic. The sequels....eh, not so much.

@Izaizaiza - I see it at the cinema as well, I believe it was celebrating something to do with cinema and it cost me only £1.

If you say people only like the movie because Brandon Lee died couldn't you say the same about Heath Ledger and The Dark Knight.

@marvel72 - I'm not saying people only enjoy the movie because Brandon Lee died, but I am saying that the movie gained a lot of fame and notoriety because of his death. If he hadn't died, I think it would have been a one and done footnote in the lead up to better comic book movies. The dark Knight is a great film, but I think it too benefited at the box office and the award shows because of ledger's death.

The original is a classic.

Are you high?

@lazlodaytona - It certainly has a particular mid-90s, b movie charm. I do like the miniature sets for "Detroit"

@AmazingFILMporg - Not currently, but maybe if I did get high it would help me get through the rest of the film. I think because I'm old, I remember when it came out and we all saw it, enjoyed it well enough while in the theater, and promptly forgot about it... Except for the bit about Lee being shot

Brandon Lee would have been a megastar after that role. He would have had a career similar to Johnny Depp or Keanu Reeves, and it would all have been because of The Crow.

@Izaizaiza - Hey I’m on your side. I always found the Crow to be incredibly overrated. It’s fine. But not excellent. Not terrible. Just fine. Some people love it a lot, and great for them. But the last time I watched it was about 5-6 years ago, found it ok, and not sure I ever need to watch it again.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 10:02 AM
@Toecutter - I'm mostly joking. I was looking forward to watching the film for the first time in 30 years, and I did think it had some b movie charm... But it was not as good as I expected it to be. Regardless, I hope the remakes good, but if I'm being honest it doesn't look any better than the original to me.... And I think face tattoos are almost always a mistake on characters

Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 10:04 AM
@mountainman - Yeah, there are some fun aspects to it. I love the miniature sets of fictional Detroit, but after 45 minutes I had to turn it off. I'll probably finish it up sometime the next week or two, but it wasn't great

Toecutter - 3/19/2024, 10:47 AM
@Izaizaiza - Nah, it's cool. I can see why some think it's overrated as a film, but I can also see why it's so beloved. An example would be Batman 89. It's not that great of a movie, but that doesn't stop it from being so iconic and marking an era.

Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 11:06 AM
@DudeGuy - You know, I actually think part of the issue here is that I'm old 👴🏻. I was 25 when the crow came out, so I have zero nostalgia or romantic memories about it. That's not to discredit people who truly love the film, but I do think it makes a difference. I love the original Superman, because I was eight or nine. When that came out. I can objectively look at the flaws, but I love that [frick]er with all my heart
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 11:07 AM
@Toecutter - Yeah, I agree with that. 100%. Another thing that I just mentioned to somebody else is that I'm [frick]ing old. I was 25 when the crow came out, so I have no nostalgia or romantic memories about it. The original Superman came out when I was nine, so although I can view some of The flaws with that film, I will love that son of a bitch till the day I die
DudeGuy
DudeGuy - 3/19/2024, 11:40 AM
@Izaizaiza - I get it. At the end of the day this is all subjective. I know we get passionate about the stuff we love and think everybody should love it as well. The Crow has always been a cult classic that appeals to certain people. Same goes for its source material. For me, the movie is an example of something that I like better than what it’s based off so that’s really my only attachment to the IP. Although I do respect Obarr and the story behind him, writing it. Most people I’ve talked to who have seen the original love it just as much as I do. But for one person I know who has seen it, there’s probably five who haven’t.

Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 11:52 AM
@DudeGuy - Yeah man, and I'd love discussing this stuff which is why I come to this site. I'll always give my opinion, but my goal is never to shit on anything other people love?

@Izaizaiza - art is subjective. On the surface it's easy to see how someone would dismiss The Crow as just another low-budget revenge thriller. But it's something else. Maybe it's extra-normal appeal was lost on you.

Some people see a blue and white dress, some see a gold and black dress.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/19/2024, 1:45 PM
@ObserverIO - art is certainly subjective. Which is one reason I love art criticism! Art criticism is the art of articulating what one values in a piece of artwork. As long as there isn't a disconnect between what somebody says and the actual art, you could have two polar opposite opinions, both beautifully articulated, and equally valid.

It seems to me that much of the love for the original crow comes from nostalgia, and the legend that grew around Lee's death. That said, I'd love for somebody to articulate why they think the film is fantastic. I can point out a few things that I think are good, like those wonderful miniatures of the fantasy version of Detroit. As a whole though, I find the film pretty forgettable

I understand all the about the 'look' but the original movie and it's sequels weren't that great either, it's more just that it's tied to Lee's legacy.

This new one for what it's worth may be an entertaining watch, not one i'll be paying for, but a watch none the less.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 3/19/2024, 9:40 AM
@UniqNo - I respectfully disagree.
It's not just about Lee.

This was a comic film that took a HUGE chance in it's time and it worked all around. Yes, the sequels sucked. The original is a good, but very brutal story.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/19/2024, 9:48 AM
@lazlodaytona - The director makes it about Lee and his legacy. It's not a bad movie, but it's not great. Ok i understand about the cult following etc, but i'd imagine if Lee survived it would not have had such reverence. Kind of the same thing for TDK with Ledger's performance, as good as it was.

The face tattoos aside, this looks good. I think the idea that you cant make more movies because an actor died is ridiculous. I loved both heath Ledger as Joker and Chadwick as Black Panther, but the characters transcend the actors people.

I just watched the original crow last night with my gf and that movie has so much damn personality that it was fun to watch just for how different it was. I'm also convinced the city was Gotham and that they 100% based HeathLedger's joker look on him.

Biggittyb76 - 3/19/2024, 9:27 AM
Everyone seems so interested in what the director of the ‘94 film thinks. If you read the comic, even the ‘94 film wasn’t that faithful. How about let’s ask James O’Barr what HE thinks of the trailer. I loved the comic. I loved the Lee version. Didn’t care for the sequels/interpretations. This one looks pretty good. I wasn’t expecting a shot for shot remake of the comic. It’s been 35 years. It’s ok to update the source material. Bill Skarsgard goes all in on everything he does. I’m going to go see it. No one ever seems to like any trailer or ‘first look’ of anything anymore. What does it really matter at this point? People talked so much shit when they heard Heath Ledger would be the Joker and that was before even a single frame of the film had been shot. SMH

The sad thing here is that all they had to do was continue the line of Crow follow ups by letting this be it's own thing instead of recycling/trashing the original film. Simple and effective. Or even use a new motivation for revenge as a new plot driven directive other than the soulmate route. Simple solution. The sequels did it.

But NOPE.

Hollywood today is on a bender for remaking favorites just to groom and manipulate people into accepting their awful decisions just to trick the audience back into theaters.

@TheLight - If they could just ADR the surnames, this could be a legacy sequel. And it would probably be better received.

It will fail because it's remaking the beloved original. One fatal mistake.

Can't they ugly sonic this thing?
