DC Studios Boss James Gunn Reveals How THE FLASH Sets Up The New DCU; "[It] Resets Many Things, Not All"

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has addressed the role The Flash plays in setting up the new DCU, confirming that while some things are going to change, others will remain the same. Read on for details...

Original plans called for The Flash to end by softly rebooting the DCEU, replacing Ben Affleck's Batman with Michael Keaton's Dark Knight and swapping out Henry Cavill's Superman for Sasha Calle's Supergirl. From there, we'd have eventually got a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie, with both Affleck and Cavill expected to return.

That's all been scrapped now, with DC Studios embarking on its own plan to reboot the DCU with some new, and some returning, actors.

The Flash has undergone at least a couple of rounds of reshoots over the past year, with James Gunn and Peter Safran confirming they've consulted on the movie. The former recently answered a few fan questions on Instagram, including the notion that it's now going to reset everything. With that, he cleared up some long-standing confusion.

"Nope. Flash resets many things, not all things," the filmmaker teased. "Some characters remain the same some do not."

In other words, it sounds like The Flash is still going to reboot the DCEU, transforming it into the new DCU. We don't expect a big deal to be made out of that, though, and would guess it's going to have a relatively open ending so no specific characters are locked into the DCU that Gunn and Safran choose not to keep around.

So, anyone who wasn't in The Suicide Squad?

We kid, but remarks from Gunn during Monday's DC Studios press event may offer more context. "Some things are like a rough memory of what happens in the DCU," he said of whether the DCEU remains canon, "but once we hit Superman: Legacy anything can be changed."

It's all still pretty confusing, but a plan is in place, and we anticipate learning more in the coming months.

The Flash races into theaters on June 16.

Somehow Ezra Miller returned

@Kurne - I think Barry Allen should die and be replaced with Wally West, that way you get rid of Ezra Miller.

@marvel72 - Just find some way to get Barry stuck in the Speed Force, have the DCU introduce Wally West, have him be the main Flash for that universe and if they wanted to do Crisis on Infinite Earths a decade from now, have Barry show up as a small cameo.

@marvel72 - I think if The audience continues to reject Miller, this likely will be their plan.

@marvel72 - I’ve always preferred Wally to Barry anyways ( except for that time he killed those heroes ).

@Kurne - Ezra is not going anywhere until they start losing sponsors and advertisers. once it hits their pocket books then they will pull a 180 and dump him. until then they are going on the hope that everyone forgets by then and the movie if excellent will bring about forgiveness.

@Arthorious - Me too, when I started getting into comics, he was The Flash so he was always the best Flash to me.

I think it's not as confusing as it sounds... if and when Flash shows up again they will just do a straight out recast. DC/Ezra will release some bullshit letter about how HE decided to step away to continue focusing on HIS recovery so they don't look like assholes.

That or he kills himself. I'd consider both situations a win...

Na I'm joking. I hope he heals.

@UnderBelly - Again, they can't afford to shit on the movies already produced... they need that revenue and business confidence. You won't hear them talk about how they really feel on those movies until a year or 2 after release.

I hate Ezra as much as the next person but a suicide "joke"?

Do better with your life.

Confusing as F. Hard reboot is still the way to go. The DCEU had its moment but mostly was a misfire and mess. They need a clean break. Also this leaves Ezra Miller as the new universes Flash and a big NO to that.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 2/2/2023, 12:37 PM
@MrDandy - exactly why isn’t a hard reboot so difficult to do? Shoot the animated universe did it a few years ago. Justice League Dark Apokolips ended that universe so a new one could start.

@MrDandy - they dont want to alienate any snyderverse fans beyond what they have done. thats lost revenue no matter what you think about that segment of fans. soft reboot lets it count but not count at the same time. the history still happened but in story its foggy and or outright forgotten to characters. but to the real world the past movies still made a difference. you start fresh but at the same time dont flush the old down drain as meaningless and waste.

Sounds like a hard reset of everything would've been smoother. Just let go of what came before, is that so hard...

@GhostDog - if it was a full reset at least those upset by Cavill's unfortunate exit (Me for instance) could understand and appreciate that. But playing favorites feels more like a slap in the face.

I'd have been much happier with a completely clean slate.

So basically it's my fear. He's soft rebooting it. He's picking and choosing his favorites that will stay, and restarting everything else.

Not saying this won't work but... Not ideal. Wish he would've just gone all the way with a reboot, or all the way with sticking with the DCEU.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/2/2023, 9:41 AM
@KWilly - I agree. I think they should have chosen to stay and tried to repair the DCEU or made a clean break. This half-reboot is likely to confuse audiences and reeks of a studio wanting to have their cake and eat it too.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 2/2/2023, 9:59 AM
@KWilly - I feel if the movies that are already made had come out already then yeah it would have been a total reboot but they kind of have to allow what's already filmed and payed for be allowed a chance at success. To say they don't matter now before they even get out the gates will surely doom whatever box office potential they have, especially as its franchise filmmaking.

Batgirl is the exception as it was a made for TV kinda thing but to write off all those other expensive ones...ouch... WB would probably have had to sell DC to stay alive.

Which at this point, I'm not even against lol

@KWilly @MrDandy
I know that there is a vocal community that want to "burn it all down" and start fresh. While I understand that line of thinking, I believe it ignores one of the more attractive features of keeping some of the old-we will hopefully not retread old ground or overthink the creation of established material. Do I really need a 3rd interpretation of General Zod beyond Terrance Stamp or Michael Shannon? Or a new setup for Task Force X? Does Atlantis need a complete reboot or is the aesthetic shown in Aquaman the way they would like to keep it?

These concepts are already cemented in the minds of the audience and if a full reboot too place, there may be pressure to reinvent concepts that are proven to work. Now, there is an argument to be made that some of these concepts need a reboot. I personally hope that Superman: Legacy opens the door for a more optimistic "Smallville" take on Superman against the backdrop of the entire DCU rather than Snyder's alienated outsider. By picking and choosing what to keep, DC can keep select ideas consistent across their elseworlds while other ideas are reimagined.

That said, please, let's get rid of Miller as Flash, please.
