Nathan Fillion Talks About Becoming The Greatest American Hero

In an interview with MTV, the man who should have been Hal Jordan talks about his desire to star in the old TV show remake as well as comparing it with his own cancelled far-too-soon show, Firefly...

We already know that Fillion wants to put the malfunctioning tights on, find out below why exactly he feels so passionate about it...

"I think The Greatest American Hero is ripe for a comeback," Fillion told MTV News. "I know I'm Canadian, but I think I could put my hat in for that one."

"I just finished watching the DVD collection of it and thought it had some really great direction and I think it kind of slipped and slid around a little bit," he explained. "They changed the main character's name a couple times ... It seemed to be suffering from the same kind of mistreatment that Firefly suffered from—episodes being shown out of order, never for more than two weeks consecutively, [and] being preempted for different things."

Firefly was granted the chance to tie up loose ends and get the swan song it deserved with the excellent Serenity, But no such luck for Hero...

"It's too bad they just didn't just let it continue in this very strong direction and just let it become its own thing and let it grow and let it be incredibly strong," he said. "What better way to pay homage to something I enjoyed as a younger man than to do it again."

I realy like Mr. Fillion and think he would be great in a CBM. I am not sure GAH is the right one. That character is supposed to be kinds nerdy, right?

Like supermario, I too am not all that familiar with "Greatest American Hero." Though I might check it out since Fillion is apart of it.

Pity he didn't get the GL role, I think he was one of the best GL candidates, though I don't think he was quite as perfect as a lot of people say he was.

I hope he is part of the GL film in some way though. I see him as a perfect cameo as Martin Jordan, Hal's father who died in the airplane crash. It would be an awesome nod to the fans, and I can easily imagine him in the role.

I dont know if he was SUPPOSED to be GL but he does look like the part, aside from the fact that Ryan Renolds is a perfect wally west, I guess RR was already TOO eager to be a super hero and he is hot in hollywood right now. Still there are so many super heroes that he could even someday Kyle Ryner or any other supehero for that matter.

Fillion wouldn't be a bad Scott, but I think there are better choices out there.

Such as Bruce Greenwood, Dennis Quaid, etc.

Nathan Fillion for Martin Jordan!

Love the GAH. I think he's do a good job even if they kept it funny or made it serious. Hopefully it would have the same vibe as Firefly and have a little of both. Heck whomever gets the film rights should get Joss Whedon to write and direct it. That would be fantastic in my book.

I think that know that show, I am not sure where i saw it, but i was in one of those late night shows like nick at night thing... If i wasn't mistaken..it was about space ship visiting earth and gave this man super powers , like GL but the space left without telling him how to use his powers... So he it is like george of the jungle but instead of swinging from vines... he flies but don't know how to land and so bumps in to everything.

Fillion is AWESOME! Everything that I've ever seen him do has been fantastic.
Firefly,
Serenity,
Slither,
Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog,
Two guys and a girl and a pizza and whatever
He was even awesome as the a-hole dude in Blast From The Past.
Fillion deserves more exposure and I think that giving him this opportunity to play a sort of obscure character with a cult following is perfect for an obscure actor with a cult following.
Fillion as GAH would be the balls! I think it would pan out in a similar way to the effect that Transformers produced of revitalizing a fading property and giving some actors household recognition.

BTW, if the powers that be DO decide to make a STAR WARS movie about Han and Leia's kid, Fillion would be an excellent candidate. He always reminded me of a young Harrison Ford.

Fillion would be a brillaint Allan Scott FOR A PERIOD PIECE. But other than that, i'd give it to Ed Harris ;)

Nathan Fillion is awesome, though the GAH character was a bit more nerdy than he appears to be. I would have loved him as Hal Jordan, more so than Ryan Reynolds.

Also, not every series he has been in has died out, he was in Lost for like one episode. Plus Castle is fantastic, if they ditch that series someone running the station is an idiot.

Also @ Sirprize and Teabag, those just made my day. I think I may need to print it out at about movie poster size and post it at work.

I agree with some of you about Fillion being GL. That would have been an awsome break through for him in the CBM world! But getting to see him in any CBM will make me happy. He's a good actor, a funny guy and takes his roles seriously.

If you want to ensure your show has a short life, put it on FOX.

Guys, I would love Nathan as the GL. Yes, Ryan Reynolds should actually be The Flash. Guess What? It's not going to happen. Get over it. I was mad about it at first but, oh well.

As far as GMH, I remember watching that show back when I was 7 or 8 (I'm 34 now) and loving it. I knew most wouldn't know about it because it was early 80's and has gotten much re-run over the years. It was one of the few live action super hero shows out there. It was almost as good as the other ones that were out at the time (Wonder Woman, Incredible Hulk). I think what made the show cool was that the guy was kinda like a uncool joe-schmo teacher (though he had a hot girlfriend at the time). It's funny because he would fly crooked and when tried to land he always had to run into something (trash cans, dumpsters, etc.) to stop. Very original show idea.

@BEO - actually they gave him instructions but he lost them.

Nathan Fillion would be good for Ralph Hinkley! But, I'd also go with:

Jennifer Love Hewitt as Pam Davidson
James Woods as Bill Maxwell
Michelle Tractenberg as Rhonda Blake
Robert Pattison as Tony Villicana
Brandon T. Jackson as Cyler Johnson

Only ones I'm not sure about are: Paco, and Agent Carlisle!!!

This would be an awesome movie...not sure if Fillion could pull off the nerdy teacher, but a re-design wouldn't be ignored. Maybe a more serious version. Actually, a ore serious version without a FED, would probably have a Green Lantern feel.

@Jimdlux - Actually, Mr. H was NOT nerdy. He was the cool teacher. He's just a complete doofus in the suit (b/c, you know, flying and landing are difficult w/a manual), but if you look at how he acts w/the kids and how Maxwell interacts w/him, he's kinda too hip for the room.
