So, I'm a kid of the 1990s. As far as comic book based shows go, we had the best shows in the 90s. Especially from Marvel.
*X-men
*Spider-Man
*Iron Man
*Fantastic Four
*Hulk
And then came the 2000s. Marvel brought us new shows. Some good. Some bad. Including:
*X-Men: Evolution
*The Spectacular Spider-Man
*The Avengers:Earth's Greatest Heroes
*The New Avengers
*Wolverine and the X-Men
*Ultimate Spider-Man
*Iron Man: Armored Adventures
The list is a combination of both the good and bad shows. However, I noticed that we never had an animated Thor show. This actually shocked me. After Dr. Strange, Thor is one of my favorite Marvel heroes.
So, this is how I would go about making a Thor animated series.
Title:
I had come up with several possible titles for the show. The first one I came up with is the unoriginal
Thor: The Animated series. However, adding "The Animated Series" to the end of the Hero's name seemed like something DC would do. Next, I cam up with
Thor: Legends of Asgard and
Thor: God of Thunder. God of Thunder was quickly dropped because it's the name of the horrible movie based game. Legends of Asgard I dropped because it just didn't seem to fit. I finally came up with
Thor: Defender of the Nine Realms. Good title, I thought. It summed it up quite nicely. Because that is what Thor does, he protects all nine realms.
Setting: Much like
Iron Man: Armored Adventures, I want this Thor series to focus on a more adolescent Thor. Unlike Armored Adventures, however, I don't want the series to star Thor much younger. In my series, I want Thor to still be an adult, but just younger. More brash and cocky.
Tone: I want the tone similar to the tone set in
The Avengers and
Iron Man 3.
When I say that, I mean the tone is serious most of the time, and it even gets dark. But, there is still some room for comedic and lighthearted moments. Like one of my favorite lines in
Avengers is when Thor attacks Loki, and Loki vanishes, revealing it was a double. And Loki says "Is there ever going to be a time when you don't fall for that?" The tone should be a balance of drama, action, and comedy.
Animation Style: For a comic show, I would prefer traditional animation. One the whole, I prefer it to CG. As for the style of the drawings and such, I would want something similar to the style of
Young Justice:
Cast: No show is complete without it's cast. And cast is what we'll be talking about now. I will tell you that is was tough, sticking to TV and voice actors.
Joseph Morgan is best known for his roles as Niklaus ""Klaus" Mikaelson in the CW Supernatural drama
The Vampire Diaries and its upcoming spinoff
The Originals, and as Lysander in
Immortals.
Watching Chris Hemsworth, as well as other Marvel adaptations, Thor has a very melodramatic voice with a slight British hint to it. Morgan has very powerful, very commanding deep voice that I believe would suit the God of Thunder just fine. It's easier to see Morgan voicing the role than it is to see him physically playing it. But that's just because he lacks the body type in my opinion.
Listen to his voice. He has HUGE POTENTIAL for the God of Thunder.
Kelsey Grammer is known for his role in
Cheers and it's spinoff
Fraiser as well as voicing Sideshow Bob in
The Simpsons.
I chose Grammer for Odin because of his voice. He has this very powerful voice. The only concern is that would he do it? I mean, he does guest spots all the time. But, at this point in his career, would he really come back to do television? I think so. I mean he did do
Boss.
A variant of his Sideshow Bob voice might be nice. That elegant accent, only stronger and bolder.
JK Simmons (
The Legend of Korra) was also considered.
Lauren Graham is noted for her roles as Lorelai Gilmore in
The Gilmore Girls and as Sarah Braverman in the NBC drama
Parenthood.
If this were for live-action, this would be a bit of a stretch. But for voice acting, Graham is perfect for Frigga. A lot of Graham's roles are as strong mothers. It doesn't get much stronger than the Queen of the Gods.
Dana Delaney (
Body of Proof, Superman: The Animated Series) was also considered.
Gabriel Mann is known for his role as Nolan Ross in
Revenge and as the voice of Bruce Banner (not the Hulk) in both
Wolverine and the X-Men and
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
All I can say is watch
Revenge! Mann's character has a lot of mannerisms similar to Loki. I think his voice is perfect for the Trickster God.
In my series, Loki is portrayed as more of an anti-hero. He isn't truly an antagonist. He works and plays both sides of the field. You don't know what his true motive is until he reveals. He wouldn't truly become an antagonist until the final season or the last three seasons.
I think he just has the perfect voice for Loki.
John DiMaggio is known for his roles in
Futurama, Teen Titans, and
Batman: Under the Red Hood. I've seen him do both comedic and dramatic work. While Volstagg was originally written as comic relief, he has become more than that and I think DiMaggio would be great at bringing out that balance.
Among his many credits, Matthew Mercer is known for voicing Tygra in the
Thundercats reboot and Tony Stark/Iron Man in
Iron Man: Rise of Technovore. It was his Tygra that convinced me he could be Fandral.
For Fandral, Nathan Fillion (
Castle) was also considered.
While researching, I found that Stan Lee based Hogun off Charles Bronson. So, I asked myself, who has a voice that could emulate that type of tough guy role. Bader came to mind. Especially his voice for Batman in the mediocre
Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Guy Gardnir in the sadly short lived
Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
Lacey Chabert is known for her voicing Meg in the first season of
Family Guy, Zatanna in
Young Justice and Gwen Stacy in
The Spectacular Spider-Man.
At first, I was against casting Chabert as Jane. All of her credits in voice acting have her as these really young characters. To this point, I don't even know how I came about considering her. But I do believe she would own the role.
Crispin Freeman is known for his voice over work. Some of his best credits are as Red Arrow in
Young Justice, Guan Yu in English cast of the
Dynasty Warriors video game franchise, and Itachi Uchiha in the English cast of
Naruto.
Honestly, I was shocked that this guy had a lot of versatile roles. He is really great at changing his face to fit a role. What sold me on casting him as Heimdall was that he voiced Guan Yu.
Just some samples of his work.
Stana Katic is known for her portrayal of Kate Beckett in
Castle and as the voice of Talia Al Ghul in
Batman: Arkham City
What can I say? Tough girl as the female warrior? Seems to fit to me.
Villains: Like any good comic book, there's always a rogues gallery the hero faces. Thor is no different.
Troy Baker is known for his voice work as Abel Nightroad in the English cast of
Trinity Blood and as Clint Barton/ Hawkeye in the upcoming series
Marvel's Avenger's Assemble.
Looking for someone to capture Absorbing Man was a lot of hell! Troy Baker, like Crispin Freeman, has a very versatile voice that he can easily change for many different roles.
Ron Perlman is known for his voice work as Slade in
Teen Titans and the Lich King in
Adventure Time with Finn and Jake among many other TV and film credits.
I was surprised to see that Perlman actually did a lot of TV work. I first heard him voice acting when he did Slade. I was blown away. And then to see other TV credits. Without a doubt, I know he'd be the best choice to bring the vicious troll to life.
Among his voice work credits, David is best know for voicing Mongul in
Young Justice, Flame King in
Adventure Time with Finn and Jake, and Tombstone in his first appearance in
The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Do I have to explain this one? It's Keith David.
I always want to remain true to Norse mythology and call him Fenrir. But neverless, Clancy Brown has one of the most distinctive voices in show business. I think his deep growling voice would be best for Fenris.
Jim Cummings most known credits are as Kraven the Hunter and the Goblin in the video game
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Hondo in
Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Cummings is another voice acting great. He has a very identifiable voice and it's great. Especially for villains. Using a variant of his Goblin voice from Shattered Dimensions, I think he would be amazing as the king of the Frost Giants.
Among his many notable voice roles, Kevin Michael Richardson is known for voicing Cleveland Brown Jr. in
The Cleveland Show, Trigon in
Teen Titans, and Kilowog in
Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
If there is anything Kevin Richardson is known for, it’s his booming deep voice. His voice gives a powerful presence to both heroes and villains alike. Ymir is a MASSIVE ice giant, so he needs a HUGE voice.
Grey DeLisle is best known for voicing Mandy in
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Aya in
Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Princess Azula in
Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Honestly, Grey DeLisle is my favorite female voice actor. Her villains are amazing. Especially Azula. So casting her as the evil sorceress was a no brainer.
Phil LaMarr's voice credits include Jack in
Samurai Jack, and Kit Fisto in
Star Wars: The Clone Wars among others.
LaMarr could come up with the perfect voice for the Executioner. I also believe his voice would sound amazing with Grey DeLisle's.
Dee Bradley Baker's known credits include Tarrlok in
The Legend of Korra and Ra's Al Ghul in
Batman: Arkham City.
What convinced me to cast Baker was his Ra's Al Ghul in in Arkham City. It was the same voice he used for Tarrlok in Legend of Korra. To me, that voice would be suit Malekith.
Jennifer Hale's best known voice credit is as the Jedi Bastila Shan in
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
While Hale herself is so so, but she has a really hot voice, Especially as Bastila. And for the Norse Goddess of death, you need a combination of evil, sexy, and alluring. Hale. 'nough said.
Besides being Luke Skywalker, Hamill is most famously known for The Joker in various
Batman Adaptations, Skips in
Regular Show, and Malefor in the Spyro reboot series
The Legend of Spyro.
Hamill! One of the great voice actors. He is known for his villains. The Joker. And Hamill can do monsters really well.
As for Mangog's look, his look in the comics is rather simple. Not that that is an issue. Now,
Thor: God of Thunder was an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE video game. However, I did like Mangog's look in it. So, for a series, I would like to see something based on that appearance. Not the whole look per se, but something inspired by it.
North has many many MANY voice credits. Including Nathan Drake in the
Uncharted series, the Penguin in
Arkham City, and Deadpool in various Marvel projects.
Nolan North is probably the greatest voice actor out there. I said probably, so there is room for error. I first heard Nolan as Deadpool and Nathan Drake. So I thought he always voiced rogue type characters. Then I played Arkham City, and I learned he was the Penguin. He just blew me away. So I realized he had the potential to be a monstrous dragon (I.E. Fafnir).
Tim Curry is know vocally for G. Gordon Godfrey in
Young Justice.
Tim Curry has a really distinct voice. He is known mostly for his villainous roles. So this was really easy.
