There have been great expectations when it comes to Marvel’s much anticipated release, “Thor” and, having seen the film for myself at the world premiere, I can certainly say to the fans that it will more than exceed these expectations.
This film is totally different to anything Marvel has released before. It is a true epic. At times it feels like it is two films in one; a film of the superhero genre depicting a superhuman character among mortal men, and a fantasy/ adventure film set in the spectacularly created realm of Asgard.
Visually, it is a sight to behold. The special effects are beyond fantastic. The effects of Asgard, of Jotunheim, are on a huge scale, and the colours used give this movie a very unique aesthetic.
The score is absolutely exquisite. It’s funny because I’ve never been too impressed by Patrick Doyle’s scores in the past. In comparison to John Willams’ Harry Potter scores, Doyle’s was bland, but the score for “Thor” makes it clear as to why Branagh always uses him for his movies. It mixes a grand majestic style with a modern film score style.
I think the greatest thing about this film though, is its characters. Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor is absolutely wonderful and warm. He’s captivating to watch. He is the perfect mix of arrogant, honourable, sincere and hilarious. In the film, he really owns the role. He has created a really distinct and definable character, much in the same way that Robert Downey Jr. did with Iron Man. And I am sure that this role will boost Chris’ career as it has done with RDJ. Tom Hiddleston is a wonderful villain. It’s clear how perfect he is for that role, and how much effort he put into it. He is a really unpredictable and multilayered antagonist. All the casting is just absolutely perfect. Anthony Hopkins is amazing.
Branagh seems to be one of those directors who just have the knack of getting the best performances out their actors. Everyone in this film is sensational, and Branagh’s classical training certainly comes into play with the style of Thor being what it is.
There is such a great use of humour in the film. It’s absolutely hilarious at times, with much of the comedy coming from Hemsworth. Having said this, the film achieves comedy without detracting from the drama of any good comic book film. I loved all the scenes with Lady Sif and the warriors three. These actors too, were sensational.
There are several moments in the film (without spoiling anything) that will make the fans excited. One involves Hawkeye, another involves Thor ‘becoming worthy’, and yes, there are Donald Blake references. It’s all just absolutely fantastic. There’s plenty of super-fast hammer swinging and flying. And the post credits sequence is absolutely jizzworthy.
I must also say – it is by far the best cameo Stan Lee has made in a film thus far. I laughed SO HARD.
The ending of the film may disappoint some, and it will be interesting to see how Thor will return in “The Avengers,” but for the most part, the storyline is great. It’s really wonderfully devised.
This is a really simple review, but I just want people to know how fantastic this film is. Given that I am one of the first of the general public to have seen it, I felt I had this duty. Have faith that when the time comes for you to see it, you will not be disappointed. What this film really does above all is that it makes you ten times more excited for the avengers than you already were.
It was just so much fun. The action scenes were crazy-good and all Chris Hemsworth scenes are just delightful to watch. He is a true talent.
IT’S SO AWESOME!!!
I give it 9/10
