Director Kenneth Branagh told the L.A. Times that he was initially hesitant to go 3-D on Thor because he felt it was all "math and physics" and way over his head, but he warmed to the idea:

"We came to feel that in our case 3-D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience.

"It's another draft of the story that can reveal itself in a different way," he said. "I had a healthy degree of skepticism up front ... I've become somebody extremely excited about working with possibilities of doing it this way.

"A pretty careful conversation is what we've been having for quite some time about what we know has to be the most sensible decision: Is it led by story? Can this offer a different type of experience and exploit what we have in the story? It absolutely can ... we travel very long distances in the movie and the opportunity to export and exploit the journey of the hero is really offered up as a great potential enhancement here."

Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Rene Russo, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Thor opens May 6, 2011!

-----

For his part, The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston said that he still has his doubts about 3-D, though he now considers it "a new challenge" and "exciting":

"I think [3-D] tends to be overused and can be a little bit gimmicky. A lot of people are using 3-D now because they feel have they have to ... that will come and go and the pictures that deserve to be in 3-D will continue to be. When it's done bad, it can make you carsick."

The First Avenger: Captain America stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough and Hugo Weaving.

The First Avenger: Captain America opens July 22, 2011!

@yousaman: According to an early interview with Branagh, the Asgardians are less "gods" and more like a high-tech alien race, which kind of fits with Marvel's interest in making everythig grounded in science.

Not crazy about Thor being an "alien" rather than a "god" myself, but we'l see...

Awesome find. They look interesting. I like the high-tech feel to it. However, I hope Loki gets a better costume.

A couple of weeks ago, when Thor's pictures were first released (right after Captain America's), a producer on the Thor movie said he was surprised how "disco shiny" his suit looked in those released pictures. He added that it does not at all look that way in the movie and works well with what they're trying to do. I think this new pic is more of the "disco shiny" look, so I'm guessing that everything will look much better on film. Give it a chance.

Hmmm....dont know if this was the way to go. I'm afraid going with a futuristic feel will make the movie look dated in a short amount of time. A more Medieval look would have been timeless.

Eh, costumes may look better in motion. Not crazy about this pic. What's with Odin? Looks like he just farted and knows his sons are in the backdraft.

Thor's chainmail does look better here than the previously released photo.

@Brent

"According to an early interview with Branagh, the Asgardians are less "gods" and more like a high-tech alien race"

Coincidentally (or maybe not) this was pretty much Jack Kirby's view when dealing with the Asgardians (and the New Gods, and the Eternals...), very much like teabag noted above. Still, I'd personally prefer a little less Star Wars and a little more Beowulf, but it's all good.

@SP- Sorry, but I think it's awesome. In normal Marvel cont., they're not really divine, but get extended life from the Apples of Idunn. Can't really say if it follows the comics or not because I haven't seen a trailer with story info. I'm impressed that they kept the green and gold motif for Loki. Overall, I'm expecting great performances, which takes precedence over costumes and sets any day for me.

@Brent- but Kenneth, also, spoke much on doing research into the Norse mythology as well. I think the "alien" thing relates well to Marvel's Thor.

@Star- I don't think we'll get helmets in promo pics. Movie yes, promo pics no.

COSTUMES ARE AWSOME I THINK..

..THEY AREN'T DATED TO A POINT OF TIME YET SHOW THESE ARE BEINGS BEYOND OUR WORLD, GETTING THE BASIC FEEL OF THE ORIGINAL LOOKS BUT BRINGING IT TO TODAY. I THINK THOUGH IF WE SEE THEM WITH HELMETS IT WILL MAKE IT ALL COMPLETE....
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 7/14/2010, 6:32 AM
Odin's costume has a pretty metallic look to it, and he's the clostest one to the camera. It looks kind of like the same materail used for the Iron Man armor costume. Anyway, if in the right lighting, Thnor's costume looks as good as this, I think it's look very good in motion.

I think the real make or brake this movie is gonna have is at comic con with the first footage

Remember if your going to the panel for marvel movies don't (wink wink) record it all and put up online for the world to see. Dont do it (wink wink)

So now Thor is NOT a Norse god? What a huge insult to our Scandinavian friends! This is similar to calling the Greek gods an "alien race". Look, just because we don't worship these guys is no reason to dishonor and disrespect their mythology. Part of what made Thor interesting was his perspective as a "god among men".
So is Asgard now a spaceship? And the Rainbow Bridge is merely their transport beam? EPIC STUPID!

Anyway, between that horrible idea and the ridiculous armor the lead characters are wearing (Odin looks like a cyborg Transformer), that's ten bucks that can be budgeted somewhere else next year.

Is this Thor??? Or Flash Gordon!?!?!

Hmmm - dangerously camp. I am sure that after post production things will look ALOT cooler.

God - I hope there is a non-3D option in the cinemas too.

Man, I am not used to being this moany! I will stop...

the Earth X series noted the Asgardians as a sentient alien race with no form other than what was projected on to them. They were the final evolutionary form of humans manipulated by the Celestials.

awesome. i think this futuristic kinda look helps a lot with the believability that they exist in the same universe as iron man etc. i really love this. cant wait.

3D what dumb ass said "Let's show this in 3D" . 3D movie suck. I'm not real sure about the costumes, won't say till I see the movie. Atleast the destroyer looks good.Thor is way to small.

@teabag...good point on the costumes. They definitely look more futuristic in the earlier comics. I'm sure Branagh/Feige were following that concept. They made the story more science-based to help fit in with the movie-verse they've created. I think, in the end, it will all work well with the other Avengers on screen.

Guys, Thor and the Asgardians aren't aliens in the comics, and they probably won't be aliens in the movie.

They're an ancient race of gods created when the Elder Gods died, along with all the other pantheons in the Marvel universe. The reason they wear futuristic armour is because they have existed for millennia, mixing magic and technology as they developed.

Anyone complaining about the look they're going for in the movie are basically complaining about how Kirby originally designed the characters in the first place. And I'm pretty sure dissing Kirby is a crime.
MassExecutions

Tea, Upupandaway, and the others that have mentioned it are right. This is the way Kirby did it in the comics. This is the first time a film has actually looked Kirbyesque. Besides, why should Asgardian culture be static? Maybe they looked like vikings centuries ago when the interacted with the vikings, but now they look like this.

Also, don't worry about the alien thing. It will be just like the comics, I bet. Its just an analogy to distinguish them from the way other mythological gods have been portrayed on film.

Finally, Hiddleston looks like the freaking EMBODIMENT of Loki in that picture just from the expression on his face. Perfect casting.

I think that the armour looks a bit too shiny too, but maybe this is their "ceremonial armour", they are after all a royal family. I expect they will look better in battle scenes when they have a bit of mud and marks from axe and sword blows on them.
