Saving the franchise- Transformers

bringing dignity back to this series

Editorial Opinion

This is my first in what will hopefully be a recurring editorial series. This article will focus on a franchises from old movies, cartoons, and comics. I will bring up their rise and drastic fall. With that lets get our feet wet with the first series that BEGS for better things, the Transformers.

The Transformers was created to be the ultimate marketing tool for American kids, mostly aimed towards the young male demographic. Hasbro created a show that was simply made to sell their product, and it worked. The transformers to me is the most profitable toy line next to Barbie and GI Joe. The premise is very simple; GIANT alien robots that can turn into cars, planes, boats, guns, dinosaurs, bugs, and all other things cool. Their are the Autobots, the good guys who are mostly cars fighting the evil Decipticons who are more of the militaristic types involving tanks, jets, trains, construction vehicles, and a cassette player( GO Sound wave). As their popularity grew, Hasbro realized that eventually they would lose profits if they kept selling the same characters, so they decided to make a movie in the late 80's and KILL off a vast amount of their characters(mostly good) and introduce a new line of characters for kids to have their parents go out and buy. It wasn't a really good movie to say but it was edgy considering that it was violent, killed characters and some profanity(Spike says Sh*t in some edits).

As time gone by we had many anime versions, a cgi animal version, and a recent revival with the animated series giving tribute to the old series(Spike voices Megatron, thats awesome) and we had 2 god awful live action movies. This is where the series has hit a bus crash.

The Transformer movies were made by the king of evil himself, Michael Bay, a man who is not only racist, but has no idea how story telling works, how characters interact, and no concept of REALISM. The films were made for the only purpose of making lots of money and giving up story and plot for toys and profit. The latest schlock we got was so god awful it made a mess load of money. It was incoherent, poor written, HORRIBLY ACTED, and down right terrible. Nothing made sense in the film and didn't deserve to be made. With all this said, how can WE....THE FANS of the transformers get great movies that can be fun and engaging to everyone. I will break down each part that could fix this series and bring it back. Let me start with Directing.

Director: first thing first...Michael Bay should never be allowed to make this film series. He has no idea how it works. All he thinks about it as nothing but giant explosions and racism. Bay is nothing more of an attack dog, point and he goes for it, thats all he is good for, he makes films that are bad but make money because he is good and blowing stuff up on screen. For a series like this involving giant robots and a galactic war that has lasted be ages, the best directors I can think of doing this series any justice is either Paul Veerhoven or Jon Turteltaub. Paul is best known for making Robocop and Starship Troopers. Both of these films are satires of corporations(robocop) and military Starship Troopers) but are entertaining and engaging. As for Turtletaub makes good money for Disney and with the upcoming Sorcerers Apprentice, he can handle CGI action films pretty well...Oh another guy who could do this justice is Timur Bekmambetov, the guy behind WANTED. I loved his takes on Night and Day watch so he can handle CGI well also.

Story: This seems to be the hardest thing for the writers to come up with. HOW HARD IS THIS TO MAKE. It's simple, Good robots vs Bad Robots, have them land on earth and interact with humans, the world, destroy places and have an epic battle, the end. However to make it simpler, just make the Pilot episode of the 80's cartoon into a movie, and set it up from their.

Characters: This is pretty obvious, have the main focus be the transformers. The problem with the 2 bad movies is that we follow the human characters WAY more than the cool robots. Also the human element in these movies are pointless, they have no use other than shouting like crazy or doing something stupid. All the autobots and decepiticons are unique and cool, plus they have so many great personalities and recognizable to all of us.

Style: Now this is more or less dictated by production cost. Do we have a total CGI movie like Pixar movies or do we try and do the Live Actions better justice. I would pick a CGI movie but have Pixar doing it, because it would be so awesome and really well done.

And thats all that I can say on this for now. I would love to see these changes be done to this awesome franchise. Im sure many of you have your POV's and I look forward to seeing what you all have to say. My next, if this is a hit, will be Godzilla, not a bad series, but my hopes for the Legendary re imagining. Til next time BlackAirs out!!!

i don't know if its really fair to call the first movie a bus crash.

i know most of the transformers fans are upset about the way they look in the movies. but lets be realistic here. the oldschool transformers are based off of vehicles from the 80's. unless people want a transformers movie to take place in the 80's, it doesn't make much sense to use the original styles. and as everyone knows, their robot forms resemble their vehicle forms. so i think the way they look is a weak argument. (not that you said that, but you know as well as i do, that its a HUGE complaint with most people that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.)

as for the story, i thought the first was worlds better than the 2nd. it was a coherent plot, with almost no holes. the acting was fairly decent, and it had good action. the second is the bus crash, because it seems like Bay just did away with everything that made the first one so good.

also, the story almost has have humans. i know the old cartoon didn't really have anything to do with humans aside from Spike and his father, but think about it. its completely ridiculous to think that these giant robots are waging war on our planet without human governments getting involved. it just wouldn't happen. so by having the Autobots working with the government, i think it actually lends a little realism to the story that the old series did not.

but its giant robots fighting...how can you have it be done realistically. Have the human element but don't make them the central focus, they should be support characters. My problem with the new looks was that they looked like meshed up pieces of metal. The old school look would have meant that they were pay tribute to the characters....OR have them already be on earth and just modernize them, but not be like what they are now. I think the old look is pretty cool. I seen youtube vids of people making transformers stuff and they were much better than the movie ones

i agree, i liked the oldschool look better! i just don't have much of a problem with the new ones. they're what i would picture a giant transforming robot to look like...if those things were real, that is lol.

and i'm a fan! i grew up watching the cartoon, and i have SOME of the comics. if you haven't read it, you should check out All Hail Megatron. its a newer comic series. its really cool stuff!

Thanks for mentioning that. I actually picked it up out of curiosity and loved it. I reviewed it in my comic reviews this week.

oh really??? i ahven't read volume 2 yet, so let me know how it is. i'm sure its awesome :)

i have another one called Transformers Omnibus. its pretty big, but only like 20 bucks. its newer stuff too. but in that, Megatron and Prime are fighting, and they both get pulled through this portal thing, and they emerge as the Fallen. so the Fallen is like a Optimus/Megatron hybrid. its pretty cool too. not as good as All Hail Megatron, because it gets a little confusing, but still pretty good. :)

WORST ARTICLE EVER!!
"Story: This seems to be the hardest thing for the writers to come up with. HOW HARD IS THIS TO MAKE. Michael Bay I think did fine, they just need to do a better job to help distinguish what robot is who when they throw down. Bay is hardly racist, the guy who does Sponge Bob's voice came up with that voice. You can't say you never met someone like that robot, the problem with people is they automatically think if a character/race is portrayed in some way they think that character is representing the entire race. That's bull shit, just more overly P.C. crap. Get over it.

Story: I agree with topgooner.

Characters: The reason we follow and have the human element is to help keep connection with the characters and events unfolding. It's hard to relate to robots from outer space. Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying that's the reason.

Live action or all CGI? Well to be honest I think the live action is working fine, all CGI would be great but to be honest I don't think it would be as successful, unless they moved away from making it too realistic. Because if you go too far into realism why not just make it a damn live action?

I say its just pretty unfaithful to the original story. Basically ROTF ruined the chance to make a Best Wars movie. And why would Megatron bow down to the Fallen?

Soundwave did nothing at all. I mean they could of atleast had him transform and fight a little. And RC was just like Cyclops in Wolverine Origins. They put them in for nothing.

They said they didnt want to put them in the first film cause they would have to explain why there are robotic genders. Bull. And dont get me started on that android chick. I mean WTF!?

Michael Bay needs to stop raping other peoples stuff and make his own original film.

I feel like if a movie can make close to 400 million dollars in the theaters, it's doing at least a couple things right.

I agree with Stumblin on the racism thing...you can't think that just because he made the voice of two little robots more Ebonics oriented means he hates the black community.
