THE BOYS Star Jensen Ackles Reveals How He Was Cast And Whether Soldier Boy Could Be In Season 4

Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles has revealed what led to him joining The Boys as Soldier Boy, while also sharing some thoughts on whether the character will be one-and-done or part of season 4.

Jensen Ackles worked with The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke on five seasons of Supernatural, so the news that they were set to reunite on the third season of the Amazon series wasn't too surprising in many ways. However, while the actor consistently impressed as Dean Winchester, it appears the streaming service wasn't immediately convinced when Ackles was suggested for the role of Soldier Boy.

"Sony was talking to some much bigger names than me [they] wanted to bring in for season three," Ackles said on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside Of You podcast. "So Erik was like, 'Look, I know you can do this, but we're going to have to convince the powers.'"

Ackles had to film an audition tape for the role and worked closely with Kripke to get it ready. Then, it was time to show it to the studio. "I was like, 'Look, if you're going to go to bat for me, I want to give you the biggest bat I can. So tell me if there's anything else I can do, and he's like 'You're good.' So he went to bat for me and then boom that was it. But I worked for it. It wasn't just like 'Hey, we want to bring you on for season three,' I had to earn it."

Many fans had assumed Ackles was offered the role straight-up given his history with Kripke, so the fact that he had to earn it - beating bigger names in the process - just shows what a talent he is.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Supernatural alum was asked if Soldier Boy will be a one-and-done role similar to Aya Cash's Stormfront in The Boys' second season. "I don't know," Ackles admitted. "The door is not closed, I'll put it that way." That definitely sounds promising, and we just hope he has time considering the actor is now developing a project with Warner Bros. and DC!

The Boys season 3 is set to premiere on June 3.

This guy is an incredible actor who should have given away Supernatural around its fifth season (it was awful afterwards) and become a mega movie star. He’s very, very underrated and was far better than that show even at its best (his costar on the other hand is a lovely guy but not a very good actor). He’s very versatile and has exceptional dramatic chops.

Since he was in the running for Captain America back when the casting was going on I assumed that was the motivation behind getting him on "The Boys".
But glad he got the part, great actor.

I believe the fans realize the talents of Jensen's acting more than the suits running these various studios which is why I'm not surprised of the situation around him landing the part of Soldier Boy. He is very adept at not only drama but also comedy. Hopefully he will get more opportunities to showcase his talents in future projects. Glad he will be in "The Boys" and can't wait for its premier.

I really enjoy this show. I had not read any of the comics so it’s all new to me.

@Nunyabiz - to be fair most of the show isn't 100% comic book accurate

@TheMandalorian - I honestly think it’s a terrible show too but I see the potential in Ackles. I think he’ll do great as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was my pick for Star-Lord, thought he would have been perfect for the role.

Stuck around on Supernatural too long, far too talented an actor to be only one character for 15 years. Can’t wait to see him in this

Wonder if he auditioned for the role the same way Soldier Boy auditioned for a spot on The Seven.
