THE BOYS Season 4 Begins Production As Jensen Ackles Seemingly Teases His Return As Soldier Boy

An Instagram post shared by Karl Urban has confirmed that production is now underway on the fourth season of The Boys, and a comment from Jensen Ackles might indicate that Soldier Boy will return.

The Boys star Karl Urban (Billy Butcher) has shared an Instagram post confirming that cameras are now (or soon will be) rolling on the fourth season of the Prime Video series.

Urban is enjoying a drink with costar Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell) in the photo, but Jensen Ackles' comment ("Pour me a double... I'm on my way") has led to speculation that season 4 could see the return of Soldier Boy.

The one-time leader of Payback survived the events of the season 3 finale, but he was incapacitated after going supernova and placed back on ice. We assumed this would take him out of the game for a while since it's hard to imagine anyone from either side taking such a potentially catastrophic risk by setting the amoral Supe free again, but we wouldn't rule out Homelander seeking a reconciliation!

It was revealed that Soldier Boy is actually Homelander's biological father towards the end of season 3, and even though their family reunion didn't exactly go swimmingly, blood is thicker than water - even for a sociopath like Homelander.

Plot details for season 4 are still under wraps, but the first new cast members were recently announced, with Orange Is the New Black‘s Susan Heyward and The Following‘s Valorie Curry joining the fray as rookie Supes Sister Sage and Firecracker, respectively. We also learned that Cameron Crovertti (Ryan) has been upped to series regular, which is hardly surprising after the sinister final shot of season 3.

During a recent interview with Collider, Kripke confirmed that Ryan will be focal point of the fourth season.

"Moving forward, Ryan is a really important part of it. Both Butcher and Homelander have very good reasons to fight over Ryan because the stakes could not be higher. If Ryan goes Homelander's way and then there are two Homelanders in the world, then that's a nightmare for the planet. If Butcher can get Ryan into the light, then that's probably actually the best weapon they have against Homelander. It's always been a show about family, and so much of Season 3 was about fathers, so I think it makes sense that Season 4 is about sons."

Ryan already seems to have chosen "Homelander's way," but that doesn't mean he's beyond saving. Butcher made a major mistake by pushing the easily-influenced youngster away in the false believe that he'd be safer without such a fatalistic father figure in his life, but this completely backfired when Victoria Neuman gave Homelander his son's location.

The Boys, for me has been one of those rare shows where it’s just been getting better as it’s been going on. Sure, there are problems and nitpicks, but it’s a show that i genuinely look forward to sitting down and watching. Can’t wait for the next season!

Love this show and I still beleive that this franchise is where James Gunn and Taika Waititi would best fit with their directing styles.

@Forthas - idk about waititi, but gunn would fit after super & peacemaker. the show is getting a lot more serious with each successive season though, so idk how well they'd even fit

@tmp3 - I think the show needs to have moments of levity as well as gory violence. To me that seems to be what Gunn wants to do but he is restricted by Disney. Waititi is not so much into the gore but he can make adult subject matter funny.

Really loved season 3. Last 30 minutes or so of the final episode were a bit of let down but it still left me immediately wanting seasons 4 and 5.

this show's getting better with every season, and the ending to season 3 was so unnerving to watch that this might be my favorite cb tv show outside of watchmen now

can't wait until the next season

I genuinely enjoyed season 3, but I'm sure I was In the minority when I say soldier boy was a letdown most of the season. Hope he gets more to do next season

Season 4 can't get here soon enough, imo

and you knew damn WELL that wasn't the end of Soldier Boy though I have a sneaking suspicion he's not going to be exact same dude when he's revived

I don't think there will be an immediate use of Soldier Boy next season. They just want to have him available for use in future seasons/plots if they decide to.

Excellent, Soldier Boy was the MVP of season 3.

I hope we get to see Homelander bust him out, only for SB to blast and depower him. I wanna see what kind of sociopath (or psychopath, I don't know the difference is) Homelander is without his powers

@Nightmare - I hated the Finale. Nothing really happened. The whole season felt like a waste because of the finale.

They keep making Homelander seem to be so unstoppable Superman force. But he hasn’t shown to be all that powerful. He bleeds from fighting other supers. Like just hit him with a [frick]ing giant bomb or something.

Him being turned into the antagonist felt forced, until the last 30 minutes of the last episode, he wasnt portrayed as "bad" (certaintly not worse than Butcher).

The Boys is by a landslide the best comic book adaptation made for “TV”. It consistently gets better with its writing and it’s acting.
