THE WALKING DEAD: Glen Mazzara On Last Night's Shocking Death

Obviously if you haven't watched last night's brilliant episode of The Walking Dead yet, SPOILER warning. But if you have, read on to hear showrunner Mazzara's reason for killing off yet another important character..

Okay so Axel wasn't exactly a major character, but he was heading that way. He and Carol were becoming close, we were starting to learn a little more about the jovial former inmate, then BAM, his head is gone. There was a rumor that Axel would be next to buy the farm but that was supposed to happen last week, so I think we kinda figured he was safe, for a while longer at least. His death was just the beginning of one of the most explosively tense scenes in the show's history, as The Governor arrived at the prison for a littler payback. Speaking to EW, Glen Mazzara explains why Axel had to be the one to go..

"That was a really tough choice because we had to have the Governor exact some revenge. If he just shot up the prison without resulting in someone’s death it would have looked completely impotent. So now you start looking at characters and which character is going to go. And we evaluated almost every character — is it time to kill this character or that character? Unfortunately, the axe fell Axel’s way. It was tough because there may have been more story with him. I think we were just finding that character. I loved what he added. It was just that someone had to go and that was a really, really tough choice. That was something that I wrestled with almost more than say, Lori, because I knew we were getting story out of Lori’s death. So this was a different kind of death that was tied into the existing story but it didn’t prompt further story. I did really feel that loss. That was a tough one. I wish…. I didn’t see another way out of it."

They should've kept Lori alive until last night's episode and killed her off, along with the baby, instead of Axel.

I'm not saying that Axel should've been kept alive, but his death, IMO, wasn't really all that impactful.

In this one episode I thought, okay he's kind of a good guy I wonder if he will be a part of the group properly and end up with carol or something, and just as we sort of get into the story he was telling that happens,I was shocked to say the least but yeah, the governor wouldn't of seemed much of a threat if he didnt kill someone to teach them a lesson
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:14 AM
Also, last night's episode was pretty average, IMO. The only great parts were Daryl smashing that walker's head in the trunk and the prison fight at the end.

Everything else was just...ok.

I agree with dr horrible,we would of hated the governer more and felt ricks rage for revenge if it was lori that was shot and died

Honestly I had a feeling his was going to die on last nights episode...early on when he was talking to Carol on bridge. I thought the Governor would've come then. After that, I thought well he's safe.

Man, his death came out of nowhere. It shocked me when I saw it!

If Tyrese's group had stayed, they could have killed the extra people there, his daughter maybe, Beth, and/or Lori. I think Axel was a poor choice. I don't know but maybe that's why Mazzara is moving on: too many poor choices this season?
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:19 AM
So talking casually and telling his backstory (of sorts) to Carol warrants him to "get some" from her? LOL. Daryl would've gotten plenty by now then.

I hope next week they show where Tyrese & his group went. Plus, I heard Morgan & Duane would be back this season.

I would have loved for Axel to have been revealed as the serial killer from the comics. They could have brought the Hispanic family in with the Dixons as well. More cannon fodder.

@batz11 Honestly, I don't think Axel was into lesbians. ;)

You really need to work on your [frick]ing headlines man. Why not say "blah blah comments on last nights shocking events, instead spoiling someone someone died, then putting the spoiler in the article description.
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 8:32 AM
Ror: You really need to work on your headlines man. Why not say "blah blah comments on last nights shocking events, instead spoiling that someone died in the headline then putting the spoiler in the article description.
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 8:36 AM
I mean why even put a spoiler alert in the article at all? You spoiled that someone died in the headline, and now anyone who hasn't seen it, knows someone dies, and that the article will reveal who. That's just ignorant, and inconsiderate.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:36 AM
@Paragon79 There is no spoiler in the article description, nor is there any spoiler in regards to who died AT ALL on main.

It just said someone died on the show. How is that shocking or anything when it seems like important characters are dying off each week?

Get a grip, idiot.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:38 AM
@batz11 LOL. That's true, I guess. But it's like they say: There's no love like prison love.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:41 AM
@batz11 It's not like they would post something like "CUMBERBATCH IS KHAN" on main either.

Oh wait...;)
MisterBabadook
MisterBabadook - 2/18/2013, 8:42 AM
I agree w/ Dr Horrible. It would've been so impactful to see Lori, or even Carol get shot in the head.
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 8:44 AM
The headline says "THE WALKING DEAD: Glen Mazzara On Last Night's Shocking Death", which implies someone that's a regular on the show died last night. Why not simply say "Glen Mazzara on the shocking events of last nights episode". That way people who haven't seen the show yet don't get it spoiled that a regular died. It's a given extras will dies pretty much every show, but saying its a "shocking death" spoils that it's someone that's regularly on the show that died.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:48 AM
@Paragon79 Seriously, man, WHO GIVES A FLYING [frick]?!

It seems like regulars are dying off the show every week anyway. People CHOOSE to click on the article if they want. They know someone dies, not who, when, where, why, how, etc.

Get the hell over it and move on.
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 8:52 AM
DrHorrible: I give a [frick]. I didn't even have to click on the article to know that someone regular on the show dies. And no, a regular doesn't die every episode. Oh and btw, you don't like my comments, get the [frick] over it and move on.
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 8:56 AM
All Ror had to do was put "Glenn Mazzara comments on last nights shocking events" and then put SPOILER ALERT in the description below the headline. Instead he put that someone regular died, spoiling that fact, because he knew more people would click on his article that way.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 8:59 AM
@Paragon79 I said it SEEMS like a regular dies on the show every week, you ignoramus.

By the way, how does knowing someone dies, but not knowing who dies, when they die, where they die, why they die, and how they die exactly ruin an experience?

(That last question is rhetorical, meaning I don't need a bile-filled answer from you in regards to it).

But, no matter. I won't waste any more of my time on you and your ignorant ways.

Good day. :)

Its not a "spoiler" when your watching a show with DEAD in the title.
Quit whining people..Bring On The Dead!
Paragon79
Paragon79 - 2/18/2013, 9:06 AM
DrHorrible: The fact you're so bothered by me saying the headline needs work, shows what kind of a person you are. I worked over night last night, and am just now able to watch the show. A little while ago I clicked on this site to see any if any news was up about any CBMs coming out, and the first thing I see is someone regular dies in last nights episode. Now I get to watch the episode knowing a regular dies, which takes away from the surprise I'd get not knowing someone regular died. If that really bothers you, you should go get a life man.
DrHorrible
DrHorrible - 2/18/2013, 9:14 AM
@Paragon79 I'm not bothered by that. I'm just bothered with all the crap you've said in other articles in general. Saying things that are trollish and trying to disguise them as "critiques" is just sad.

Nonetheless, I told you I wouldn't waste more time on you, so I won't.

Say hello to your mother for me. ;)

This week the show redeemed itself...after that long break the opening episode was just awful, easily the worst of the entire run.

Glad to see its back on track.
More Kills! More Thrills! Less whining from Glenn,Rick,Andrea & people who nit-pick about "spoilers"...stay off the internet jackasses!

Good acting by the guy who played Axel. His monologue kept people distracted and when he got hit it was like the shot woke people up. But him talking about never using guns was the sign. Ror whats up! If people didn't take the time to watch the show thats their problem! No problem with our titles at all since this info was leaked all over skynet as soon as he got shot last night.! Stop Bitching!

Paragon79, as was pointed out, I don't spoil WHO dies..is the fact that someone dies in this show a major shocker? No, but the way in which Axel dies so suddenly was shocking. And anyway, the ep aired last night and most fans will have watched it. If you missed it and still clicked on the article that says SPOILER in big red letters, well that's just tough isn't it?
