WALKING DEAD: Robert Kirkman And David Alpert Talk Michonne, The Governor And More

With Michonne, The Governor and the Prison all set to make their debut in season three of The Walking Dead, fans of the comic book series will know that we have an awful lot to look forward to. Talking to Shock Till You Drop at last night's Saturn Awards, Robert Kirkman had this to say about the introduction of fan favourite character, Michonne. "I can say that I'm completely in denial when I see Danai [Gurira] walk out on set and jump off the page. As badass as she is in the comics, seeing her move and seeing her kill the zombies in motion is so much more intense that you can believe. Fans of the comics are going to love it. She's great."

The series has often taken liberties with the source material, and the trailer for the third season seemed to indicate that they will be handling the introduction of The Governor somewhat differently. Producer David Alpert assures fans that they needn't worry about the villain being toned down for television. "The Governor...if you're familiar with the books, we're totally going to go there this season. We're going to do some stuff that's going to shock some people who don't know the comics. We're bringing back Merle...It's going to get pretty intense and pretty crazy. The biggest thing I have to say is that, as the storytelling picked up at the end of season two, and the speed of events happening -- well, we're increasing it. Season three is going to be non-stop, in your face, intense. This is the point in the show that I've been excited about giving the audience since season one."

"Normally when you think of a prison, you think it's unpleasant," Alpert added when talk turned to the prison. We caught a glimpse of this location in the last episode of season two, and in season three, it play a MAJOR role. "It's a place you want to stay away from. It's a drain on society. You really think about it in negative terms. In this world, it represents hope. It's potential salvation -- unless you've read the books." Oh, and the biggest threat this season according to Kirkman? "In the beginning there were lurkers and walkers and biters. In season two there was the herd. Now we're bringing in man. Man is where we're going next." Definitely a lot more material for this season. Missing Tyreese though :-(

It's so sad to see that people like this show. It's so far from the comic I don't know why they call it Walking Dead. I'm glad I can't afford comics anymore. This series would be so much better if they had developed the characters like in the comic instead of the half ass way they did it. And there have been points where this show stops being a survival against the dead show and turns into Degrassi. Kirkman is a sellout.

@hessecorp sorry man, but you're a f&#*ing idiot. This show is great and I AM current with all the comic books. The feel, main plot points, and existing characters are very similiar. They have to make it different for TV otherwise all of us who have read the comics would know EXACTLY what was going to happen. You have to keep them as two separate entities, kind of like GOT ...or does that show suck too??

Hey no need to lash out at hessecorp, even though I think he may be a bit wrong as well. This show does a near perfect job getting the story and characters across, all while changing things up a bit. I think both mediums of the Walking Dead are stellar.

Really cannot wait for Season 3 to start. I've watched S1 and 2 so many times I've lost count. Super stoked, especially for the Governor.

Simply put, if you want the comics, read the comics. I'm glad it's not 100%. It minimizes predictability, introduced things that I've liked (Daryl), and made Shane into a great character, a character who in the comics died before he could even develop. If anything, it's so sad to see people hate on this show, usually without a justified reason.

At first, I was sad it wasn't spot on with the comics, but IM GLAD they've taken liberties now. As long as they stay somewhat on course with the source material I don't mind a few divergences. It keeps it fresh!

Sorry but I am going to have to side more with hessecorp on this one... The novels are fantastic and I wish they would have stuck to the source material more. I'm not saying I dont like the show I just wish there was more of the shared stuff between the two. Certain characters, different places they visit, hide, etc. I know I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth.

GoT doesnt really change the story that much they just use a shorter version, abridged.

@Flash: GoT Doesn't change the story that much? Catlyns whole attitude is different. Arya was Tywin's cupholder instead of Roose's and Roose is fighting on the front lines with Robb. Lollys was omitted and parts of her story were given to Sansa, and Sansa's best friend who they later attempt to pass off as Arya hasn't been seen since the beginning of season 1. Certain characters had their fates altered and others killed off differently or earlier in the story (Rakharo, The Tickler, Doreah, Irri, Pyat, Xaro) which I dare say affects things down the road. I could go on at length. It's still a good show but it is not simply abridged.

I like the show a lot, but it is just straight up depressing at times. I know its a post-apocalyptic world and everything but damn

I saw a complete turnaround in the last two episodes of the second season. It appeared as though they heard some of the comic fans bitching. Season two dragged on so badly until those last two episodes. From what I'm reading here, the third season is back to at least the spirit of the comics. I'm glad they've taken liberties with the plot. It's made it different from the source material, making it somewhat unpredictable for people familiar with the comic.
