BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Writer Suggests That The New Series Won't Be A Reboot After All

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans were not happy when news broke that a reboot was in the works, but new writer Monica Owusu-Breen has now implied that the series might actually be a continuation of sorts...

It looks like fans of Joss Whedon's beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer may not have to worry about seeing all-new incarnations of their favorite characters when the new series premieres.

Writer Monica Owusu-Breen sent out a Tweet to assure devotees of the cult classic horror drama that this new take wouldn't be setting out to replace the old show, while strongly implying that this new version wouldn't actually be a reboot at all.

Though we may not see any of the classic characters put in an appearance, this certainly suggests that the new series could be set in the same universe as Whedon's and simply focus on a different Slayer and her Scooby Gang.

That's all Owusu-Breen can say on the matter for now, but hopefully we'll find out a little more soon. In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments.

The announcement last week about re-booting the character of Buffy in that way must've prompted her and the staff to re-work their approach to this. Expanding that universe without touching what has been done before works for the best and for eveyrone, that way it leaves the door open for the old gen cast to come back if they decide it.

@NinnesMBC - I would have been fine with a reboot, as long as they do something different and dont retread what was done before. When it comes to a type of continuation, since Joss is involved its fine, although I would proffer it if he was showrunner. But Joss is at least involved in some capacity, so as long as the new showrunner does good im fine

Weird, when we say "there is only ONE (insert popular character that got rebooted)", we get branded with any "-ism".
But lo and behold when someone like Anita Sarkeesian complains, then it's justified.

Huh no gender swap for the lead cast then?! BOO that is so 2016! Absolute politically incorrect!

@boiling - speaking of, I'm finally watching Ghostbusters 2016 for the first time and it is AWFUL. Nothing to do with gender swapping, it's just plain bad.

@boiling - That would be different, but if they wanted to focus on a trans slayer, it could work, just dont make it Buffy, it needs to be a new character

@GreedoSarducci - I agree. Even for a film that isn't a reimagining of an earlier film, it's terrible. It's nothing but bathroom humor, a huge cast of actors pretending to be five years old with the men having an IQ lower than the Rotten Tomatoes score for Trailer Park's “Suicide Squad” and the cameos are just pointless. It could be all men. Hell, it could have starred the surviving cast, and it would be just as nightmarishly bad. Paul Feig has done some good work in his career, but “Ghostbusters”(2016) isn't good at all. It has nothing to do with them being women. As a matter of fact, I feel the film is sexist, because the script seriously abused these poor women.

How this film got a 75% when “Batman v Superman” got a 27%, I still have no clue.

@SisterSunday52 - It got a 75% from critics because of the “girl power” shit.
Nothing else.
A really bad remake that wasted the cameos from the original.
They could’ve easily cameod as the original Ghostbusters handing the women one of their franchise offices.
What a horrible let down.

@madhombre - My favourite part of that whole ordeal of a movie was when someone on Facebook said that the movie was inspiring and if she watched it when she was a little girl she might have grown up to be an engineer. Then my lil sis was all like "Well I am an engineer and I thought the movie was shit!" Ah, family <3

@E4Nigma - Hopefully at some point we can get some classic Buffy cast cameos if this really is set in the same universe as the original tv series

@dracula -

I would love to see Spike cameo. He's my favorite Buffy character.

@E4Nigma - As cool as that would be its not going to happen, James Marsters said he would only play Spike again, up to 5 years post Angel season 5, since he wouldnt be able to pull off the ageless vampire anymore

@dracula -

We'll see. His schedule is pretty clear and we now have the technology to de-age characters.

@E4Nigma - Yeah we can de age actors now and it can look good, but has it ever been done on a tv budget

@dracula -

That's a good question. Hollywood should put it to a test.

@MasterMix - I would proffer a continuation, but there are good reboots and remakes, plus at least Joss Whedon is involved in this one

SethBullock - 7/26/2018, 6:32 PM
@MasterMix - Except when Whedon rebooted Buffy in the 90s after the lame movie to make a fantastic TV show.

@Madad - Never watched charmed, but you're probably right.
MasterMix
MasterMix - 7/26/2018, 8:52 PM
@dracula - Yeah, but he's not the same Joss Whedon. His charm is much less endearing nowadays.
MasterMix

@KoolerThanJesus - Rebooting something that's already bad like the movie is easier then rebooting something good like the show.
SethBullock
SethBullock - 7/27/2018, 1:01 AM
@MasterMix - Yeah, I know, and I was not a fan of a reboot for the TV show, but I found funny that you said that reboots never work when this show was a reboot for the movie. XD
MasterMix
MasterMix - 7/27/2018, 6:47 AM
@KoolerThanJesus - I was typing fast. I meant TV reboots never work.
