ARROW Exclusive: The Creator Of The Arrowverse Dishes On Killing The Hero Who Started It All

Netflix will soon release Tales of Arcadia: Wizards, and we spoke with executive producer Marc Guggenheim about it. We also asked about what it was like to kill off Oliver Queen and bring Arrow to an end!

The Arrowverse is often considered one of the crowning achievements of the CW, and is highly regarded when it comes to DC television programs in general. Starting with Arrow, the universe rapidly expanded over the years to include the likes of The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and the upcoming Superman and Lois and Green Arrow & the Canaries.

We recently spoke with one of the creators of the Arrowverse, who has been imprinting his creative fingerprint on the comic book television industry, Marc Guggenheim. When chatting with the executive producer/director/screenwriter in support of Tales of Arcadia: Wizards, we couldn't help but ask a few questions about Crisis on Infinite Earths, Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow.

Marc dishes on the death of Oliver Queen and whose decision it was, the tone of the series and Oliver's journey, and bringing the show to an end. As always, if you're interested in hearing the audio component of this interview, click play on the podcast player below. We chat about Arrow around 16:00.

Literary Joe: Was Oliver's fate your decision? I know Arrow is significant to you as it started it all. So, is that something that came from you, or is it something you had to learn to deal with?

Marc Guggenheim: I, from the jump, was always advocating for Oliver to die. And the reason for that is that if you look at who Oliver Queen is a person when you meet him in the pilot, he's this spoiled jerk before he gets marooned on Lian Yu.

But even when he comes back from those five years in hell, he's the equivalent of a serial killer, especially in the first season.

And I've always felt that the amount of blood he has on his hands has to be repaid with his blood ultimately. And it never really occurred to me that his story should end any other way.

Now, the original plan was that I always assumed he would die in the last episode of the show. But once we knew that Crisis on Infinite Earths was lining up with Arrow's final season, we changed some things.

Literary Joe: Right, it kind of worked out perfectly.

Marc Guggenheim: I think so. I know that there's a lot of fans who feel like Oliver deserved a happy ending. And I would say, for my money, that we gave him the Arrow version of one.

Arrow has always been a dark show, and I think the show has sort of thrived in its darkness. And that's one of the reasons why the idea that he would get a traditional happy ending, where he gets to run off into the sunset with his wife, and his daughter felt in congruence with the tone of the show.

Literary Joe: Definitely, and I think that from a character standpoint and from Oliver's point of view, I definitely think that the ending that he got is the ending that he's always expected he was going to line up based on all the choices in his life and based on everything that's led to this point.

Marc Guggenheim: Yeah, absolutely.

*This interview has been edited for clarity.*

What do you think of Guggenheim's comments regarding Arrow? What did you think of the final season?

Oliver has the best arc in the Arrowverse yet. His COIE moments were pretty much well earned through eight years. Stephen Amell played the role perfectly.

The death(s) of Oliver Queen was handled so poorly on so many levels.

For one, both of his sacrifices were for nothing. His first "sacrifice" was holding off the Shadow Demons long enough for 1 billion of Earth-38's people to evacuate to Earth-1. But then... The Anti-Monitor destroys Earth-1 anyway.
His second "sacrifice" was killing the Anti-Monitor and saving the universe. But then... The Anti-Monitor comes back anyway and the other heroes have to defeat him and save the universe instead.

Second, Oliver was killed TWICE and they still didn't have the cast of Arrow there to witness either of them. Why would you kill off Oliver without his best friend (Diggle) there?

Third, his sacrifices were corny and anticlimactic. His first sacrifice is in an off-screen fight to the death with a bunch of generic CGI demons. His second sacrifice was just a stare-down with the Anti-Monitor while the other heroes gave him strength by looking at him thinking happy thoughts.

Fourth, having two deaths in general was such a dumb idea. It cheapens his final words when he just comes back and then dies again with more final words.

Oliver should have made one ultimate sacrifice on his show with his cast in his series' final episode.

''he's the equivalent of a serial killer''

Truer words have not been spoken. Still, although a mass murderer, Oliver's arc got a pretty satisfying end (even though I skipped the sixth and seventh seasons).

I... was a bit frustrated and underwhelmed by the way Oliver was killed, twice, in COIE. They made a big mistake killing him at the end of the first episode. I get that they wanted to subvert expectations of the audience, but it was rushed and he should have been killed off in the 2nd episode. After ALL that build up in Arrow's final season, for him to get offed in the first episode was surprising and a poor creative decision. And since he had already been frustratingly killed off, his second death lacked the punch that they were going for, imo.

Anyways, the season 8 finale was one of the greatest, most impactful episodes in the Arrowverse and a terrific way for Arrow to close out its amazing run. Stephen Amell did a fantastic job in the role of Oliver, the best character in the Arrowverse and the guy that started it all.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Agreed. I felt his first death was rather anticlimactic and unnecessary.

Loved Stephen as Arrow. Can't wait to see what Charlie Hunnam brings to the DCEU.

Speaking of Crisis, am I the only one who found the last ever intro pretty funny? I died laughing when he said "and although I am now a Spectre". I'm just imagining how confused people who haven't watched since season 2 would be hearing that.

I feel the intro really sums up how much the show changed over time. You see how dark and grounded it was in the early seasons and then they have lines like that which emphasise how crazy the universe became.

@SnideCut - I will give credit to the Arrowverse in that it actually had the balls to show and mention other universes plus the characters/actors from said universes (even if they weren't well-received) like Ezra Miller's Flash and Robert Wuhl's Knox.
