ARROW: Who Is Holding The Mantle Of Ra's Al Ghul In The Arrowverse?

With the 16th episode of Arrow this season exploring the return of the League of Assassins, it's time to ask, who is Ra's Al Ghul?

To start off, let's go into the description of episode 16 this season. The following episode will be titled "Thanatos Guild" and the description goes as follows:

Nyssa Al Ghul (guest star Katrina Law) returns to Star City to warn Thea (Willa Holland) that a group of renegade League of Assassins members are planning to attack her. This group, led by Athena (guest star Kyra Zagorsky), is intent on finding a mysterious box that Malcolm left behind and will stop at nothing to get it. Nyssa helps Oliver (Stephen Amell) come to a life-changing realization.

Firstly, Arrow welcomes back the return of Nyssa Al Ghul which is interesting as she was last seen during the fifth season finale in which she helped Oliver take down Prometheus who was working with Talia Al Ghul. In this episode, Nyssa will be going directly to Thea and who is the father of Thea? The previous Ra's Al Ghul... Malcolm Merlyn. Now, season 4 saw Oliver hand Nyssa the title of Raish Al Ghul but the real Heir to the Demon would've been Thea as she was Merlyn's daughter and so because of that, Nyssa was never really Ra's and Oliver didn't have the authority to hand Nyssa the title as he didn't kill Ra's/Merlyn. So that leaves us with the question, who is currently Ra's Al Ghul in the Arrowverse?

Well, in the promo of episode 16 this season, Nyssa informs Thea that she is an Heiress to the Demon and that's something that she can never run from. In saying that, it seems pretty clear that Thea Merlyn-Queen is Raish Al Ghul in the Arrowverse. However, what's more interesting is why are the renegade League of Assassins attempting to attack Thea? From what we know, the group of renegades will be led by an individual known as Athena. The character will be played by Kyra Zagorsky who is known for her role in the series titled, "Helix".

Athena as told by the directors of the show will bare a scar on her face and is determined to protect the legacy of her deceased leader Malcolm Merlyn, her character is also a former protege to Malcolm which makes this fight all the more personal for her. However, being a former protege, Athena's motivations for attacking is to potentially claim the title of Ra's Al Ghul.

Recently there have been constant rumors that Willa Holland who plays Thea on Arrow will be leaving after the 16th episode, however, such news has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, should Thea leave Arrow this season, who will then take the mantle of Raish Al Ghul? From what we've seen on the show, it really should be Nyssa Al Ghul, Talia Al Ghul or Oliver Queen will reclaim the title. However, the writers may also decide to keep Thea as Raish Al Ghul but it'll be a behind-the-scenes kind of story where they would have Thea guest star in certain episodes if she does in fact leave the show.

What do you think though? Who should take the mantle of Head of the Demon? Or should they make it so that the mantle becomes completely disbanded to refrain anyone else attempting to take up the role? Let us know in the comments!

So Ra's can appear on both Arrow and Gotham? Maybe this is why he was "killed" on Gotham so early in season 4.

1.) The League of Assassins were disbanded in Season Four by Nyssa.

2.) Athena is leading a renegade faction of former members of the League of Assassins, who wish to re-establish the organisation.

3.) Nyssa destroyed the ring that made people 'Ra's al Ghul.'

If the League of Assassins were to return, it would have to be in an all-new form, with different practises and a different leader. I don't think Arrow would ever dare kill Thea off as the show never kills off any of its main characters for good (Laurel is still counted in this as we still have Evil Laurel on-screen, who more or less acts the same as dead Laurel) and, worst case scenario, Thea would just be written out like Roy was with the option of coming back.
