Marc Guggenheim On VIXEN's Debut In The ARROW-verse

Marc Guggenheim on introducing DC Comics superhero Vixen to the DCTV universe currently inhabited by Flash and Arrow. "We're going to do basically an animated spinoff."

Yesterday's announcement of an animated Vixen series set in the same world as Arrow drew universal approval from comic book fans.  Today, we have more info on the project from the individual spearheading development of the show, Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim.  Here's a rundown of what he shared with CBR.

+Guggenheim refers to the Vixen animated series as a spinoff, that will feature characters that currently appear on both Arrow and The Flash.   Guggenheim also adds that the series will be a 6-part origin story for Vixen.

+One fun scene Guggenheim teased was that Oliver (Stephen Amell) will find out that Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) kissed Barry (Grant Gusting) in the animated series.  Guggenheim says fans have been asking him for quite sometime whether Oliver would ever find out about that.

+Vixen will have  a "big magic component"; something not previously explored on either Arrow or Flash.

+The Vixen animated series will be set in Detroit as a reference to the characters Justice League Detroit comic book roots.

+Writers Keto Shimizu and Brian Ford Sullivan are working on the series with Guggenheim.

+Here's what Guggenheim had to say about the animated series serving as a backdoor pilot of sorts for a live-action introduction of Vixen on Flash or Arrow.  "We always say "never say never," and if the character resonates with people, that would be wonderful. I would love to be in a position where CW said to us, "Hey, we want a 'Vixen' live-action show." That'd be wonderful. We'll have to sort of see how things play out. But our goal really is to produce the highest-quality animated series. We want people to come to this who don't normally watch an animated show. We really want fans of "The Flash" and fans of "Arrow" to go to CW Seed. We really tried to approach it the same way we approach a pilot."

+As far as the characters from the live-action shows voicing their animated counterparts in Vixen, Guggenheim says many of the actors are just finding out about the project for the first time but the response from them has been encouraging so "all signs are good".

Hopefully, Vixen does eventually make her way over to the live-action Arrow and Flash TV shows.  With Katana, Black Canary, Huntress, Speedy and even Felicity Smoak, Arrow is definitely making it possible for The CW to have a Birds of Prey spinoff.

i think its being done like this as a test run to see if people would like a live-series before comitting a full crew and budget.

Since I'm one of the first people to get a comment up on here, I just want to send a blanket message to everyone that I apologize for my constant reporting. I realize how immature and foolish that was, although my feelings regarding the images of women that are frequently posted are still the same, I have no right to judge anyone specifically.

So, I'm admitting my wrongs as I have caused frequent irritation (sounds medical) to users on this website.

So, I won't be reporting everyone simply for the images that they post.

So are DC just trying to put out shows that mirror Marvel...? Thor/Avengers had Hawkeye then came Green Arrow, X-Men and Avengers had/have Quicksilver then came Flash, Ant-man is coming then comes Atom, Black Panther is coming then Vixen. (To be fair I know very little to no info about Vixen so I'm just going by the picture used.)

Not that it matters I just found it a bit funny.

I can't wait to see Vixen animated. Hopefully whoever they cast to be her voice can be her in live-action.

I like the idea of more characters in the Arrowverse and I am fairly sure Vixen was a part of Task Force X at one point. That said, as much as an all comic book character CW would make me happy, I kind of feel like DC and Marvel kind of just need to invest in their own tv networks at this point. Even if they don't have a ton of new shows quickly, there is enough legacy content in both publishers catalogs to really justify it.

@FearTheLiving

At this point they are using left over characters that WB/DC are not using in the movies minus the Flash.

At this point you will never see Batman, Superman, or WW on the small screen.

So I am confident they are not trying to copy Marvel in any way at all.

Ruhail - I hope not, I'd rather see them stick to the animated format. That way we can get more comic book cartoons, which has been severely lacking in the past few years.

An entire TV DC universe filled with Marvel "clones" and below C-listers while the movies use the characters that are inherently DC and A-listers.

I would love me a Spectre TV series set like Agent Carter in the 40's but spanning over the centuries.. Like a ghost like version of Punisher. Make it noir and sorrowful character study. Not much action.. Just lots of good writing.

The first African female Superhero within DC Comics and you give her a cartoon?

But wait, it'll still be set in the Arrow/Flash universe? lol

And yet "Supergirl" is getting her own television show?

NegativeNerd
NegativeNerd - 1/12/2015, 8:26 AM
@TheRationalNerd agreed. Don't get me wrong...I'm glad that Vixen is getting some love, but why not just give her an actual TV show just like Arrow, Flash, and the eventual Supergirl?
JoeMomma29
JoeMomma29 - 1/12/2015, 8:26 AM
I think it is a great to see DC combining their live action shows with animation. Heck Marvel just started connecting their animation to their movies.

Either way I am excited to see DC getting some balls on the small screen, animation, and soon digital series. We need something because 2015 is going to be a long year without any DC movies...........

JoeMomma29 - 1/12/2015, 8:29 AM
@NegativeNerd

Well first of all most of the DC shows are on the CW and their budget is not as big as the standard networks. I am sure most networks are shy on bringing a fairly unknown character to the small screen.

SuperGirl is different, she is well known yet her origins are not well known so it does make a case for a good television series.

Either way DC has such a large list of characters they can do shows from and their are other characters in my opinion that need some love...........

But it is great to see some shows based on female characters.

1. Agent Carter
2. Super Girl
3. Vixen

I assume they gave her this side project so they don't have to give everyone back door pilot type episodes like they did with Barry in the main series that could kill the pacing of main shows. The SS and BoP episodes sure as [frick] killed Arrow's season 2 momentum for just being blatant setup eps for those spin offs I can tell ya that.
