The producers of the Arrowverse having been hinting at it for a while now, and tonight it happened. During the final installment of 'Crisis on Earth-X', one of the heroes did indeed meet their demise. If you haven't seen tonight's episode, stop here because obviously, a pretty major SPOILER follows.

The hero whose run came to an end was none other than one half of Firestorm, Professor Martin Stein, played by Victor Garber. He was gunned down by Nazis on Earth-X while trying to reactivate a gateway home and save Earth-1's superheroes.

Stein first made his meta-appearance as one half of team Firestorm with Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell). He has since gone on to join with the Legends where he bonded with Jax (Franz Drameh).

Since the birth of his grandson, whom he named after his first Firestorm partner, Stein had mentioned wanting to retire in order to spend more time with him and his daughter. Jax and Ray Palmer had been working on a way to separate them without killing them, and it was ultimately Cisco who discovered a way to make that happen. The consequence was that it would strip both of them of their powers.

This solution that Cisco worked out was actually what killed Stein, when he took the serum in order to stop the toll his injuries were taking on Jax.

The CW's DC superhero series will return for their mid-season finales next week, beginning with Supergirl at 8 p.m. ET/PT and continuing with The Flash (Tuesday at 8), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (Tuesday at 9) and Arrow (Thursday at 9).

Definitely cried.
I know most sites are saying they alluded to his death awhile now but I think me and many others thought they'd just let him retire with his family, leaving the door open for his return. That felt like a decent exit already...then they gotta do this and break our hearts.

@Himura - EXACTLY!

They never alluded to his death. We all knew he was leaving. But they put the wheels in motion to have him retire and be with his family. This is the road we all thought it was headed to, thus leaving the door open for a few cameo spots down the road and a happy ending for him.

This was an absolute surprise, but handled very well

Thoroughly enjoyed these 4 episodes

I did NOT expect him to die .. that came as a shock. The entire time I kept saying to my wife "Just give it a minute .. he'll be back"

Even at the funeral scene, when Jax was saying "I can still feel him" .. I was thinking he'd show up and say "That's because I'm still alive"

So well done to DC/CW for pulling this surprise off .. that and Tommy's return. I wished it but never though it would happen. So cool they brought him back for a cool arch.

I'll miss Stein, and I feel bad that he didn't get to retire to be with his family. That's a sad moment, but at the same time, DC/CW showing they are actually NOW willing to go down that road again after killing off most of Olivers family.

Sometimes I wish I didn't follow sites like these. I remember it being of the season he was saying this was his last season and he wasn't renewing his contract, so the whole season I was saying to myself how are they going to get rid of him,

Maybe they'll go find his steam punk doppelgänger from another Earth

Crisis On Earth-X Notes

1. So...Instead of getting Martian Manhunter...we got Alex...On top of that....Her reason for being there...was for her to just hoe it out with Sarah?
2. They missed there chance to introduce Bart Allen at the wedding. That would have been awesome.
3. After fighting their Earth X counterparts...Why is it that they could not figure out the identities right away?
4. Cool to see RF again....however....It would have been nice if he mentioned how much faster Barry got...on that same note...By now he should be faster than him right?
5. The whole Tommy twist....meh as [frick]. I found most of the twists were lackluster.
6. STEEEEEIIIIIIIINNNNNNNN NOOOOOOOOOO!
7. The Leo and Ray thing played on a little too thick 2nd time around.
8. They downplayed the effects of Kryptonite so badly.
9. Holy [frick]! RED TORNADO THO!!!

All in all...Crossover was pretty good.

Poor Dig, I'm just picturing him sitting there, in his chair, squeezing his stress ball for days wondering where everyone went.
