After teasing the appearance of a major Batman villain, showrunner Caroline Dries has officially revealed which of the Dark Knight’s foes will stir up trouble in the first season of Batwoman.

Today, during San Diego Comic-Con, Dries confirmed (via CNET) that the famous villain Thomas Elliot, a.k.a. Hush, is one of the many threats Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) will have to face. However, comic book fans should expect a different twist on the character, as we will apparently see a new take on his origin.

"The character of Tommy Elliot who ultimately becomes the supervillain Hush but we're seeing his origins of why he hates Batman so much," Dries explained.

While Hush will likely be the most talked about reveal from the panel, it was announced that Burt Ward, who played Robin in the classic 1960’s Batman series, will also make an appearance at some point in Season 1.

Batwoman is currently scheduled to premiere October 6, 2019 on The CW network.

A CW-fied Hush...

@BlackBeltJones -
To be fair, they have pulled off these types of villains really well in the past. Merlyn, Zoom, Reverse Flash, Prometheus, Deathstroke, ETC. They are also really good with mysteries.

The problem is that the main villain of the season is going to be Alice, so how are they doing Hush?

Is this going to be a Cayden James/Ricardo Diaz situation? Or will Hush be a villain of the week like Komodo and Godspeed?

How so? Was the wording confusing?

"Is this going to be a Cayden James/Ricardo Diaz situation?"

In other words - is Hush going to be the main villain of the first half of the season, while Alice takes over the second half.

Other examples of this are Brother Blood/Deathstroke (Arrow Season 2) and Ricardo Diaz/Emiko Queen (Season 7).

"Or will Hush be a villain of the week like Komodo and Godspeed?"

Komodo and Godspeed were villains with major arcs in the comics (like Hush) that were relegated to single-episode appearances in the CW shows.

For those who don't get what I am referring to.

Komodo (major criminal mastermind in the comics):

Godspeed (Professor Zoom-level villain in the comics):

Both villain of the week characters on the shows.

Makes sense because in this way Hush can mess up with everyone, specially Kate if he chooses to show up looking like Bruce which, if he does, would be our first look at the Arrowverse's version of Bruce, they'd have to hire someone to portray Bruce while also being Hush.

Hush is one of my fave villains and his story arc was the first Batman comic I read exactly 10 years ago. Glad he is finally getting more notoriety. His backstory is also pretty dark. They also described him as being the 2nd villain after Alice so if there are power shifts dynamics between them, the better.

Hush is a terrible character anyway. Batwoman can’t make him worse than he already is.

Hush is a great character. He was just wasted in the Arkham games.

Read Heart of Hush, Hush Money, House of Hush, Batman Eternal, and Batman Beyond: Hush Beyond. All great stories that make good use of the character.

Even Jeph Loeb's Batman: Hush (the set-up for the character) isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. The only bad Hush stories are Hush Returns, Preludes to the Wedding, and his side mission in Arkham Knight.

@Darkknight2149 - I’ve read Loeb’s Hush, he’s hilariously terrible. His motivation is laughable. Just a god awful character in general.

If the only thing you have read is the Jeph Loeb story, you clearly haven't read enough. He was barely in it, it only explained the bare minimum of his backstory, and it was more about the mystery than anything else. It didn't do anything with Hush but set him up for future stories.

There's a lot more to it than him being one of Bruce's friends who suddenly tried to kill his parents just to take their money.

House of Hush by Paul Dini is considered the definitive Hush story, and it's the one that explained his backstory and made him a central character in the Batman mythos. It also served as the template for all of his future appearances.

Hush is a dangerous criminal mastermind with one of the most tragic and f**ked up backstories in Batman's recent rogues gallery. His relationship to Bruce is also complex and interesting, as is his mental instability.

Besides Heart of Hush, I would especially recommend the sequel House of Hush and Batman Eternal. Steer clear of Hush Returns (which DC mostly ignores and has never collected in its entirety) and the Preludes to the Wedding: Nightwing vs. Hush one-shot, though. If you dislike Jeph Loeb's run, those two abominations are much worse.

@Darkknight2149 - i really really cant see anyone salvaging him from his weak and unintentionally hilarious foundations. He’s just a Mary Sue with a stupid origin.

Based on what? He didn't even make a proper appearance in that story until the very end, and even then, they barely explained his origin.

I would read up on the character instead of making assumptions based on an introductory story where he was a glorified blank slate.

If you don't want to read House of Hush (which explained his backstory), or any comic that he's actually in, then ask around. The Jeph Loeb story was more about the mystery than creating a fully developed villain. It was Paul Dini that did that.

Good job WB/CW. Bats has about 15 villains that would make a good main protagonist on film, even though they keep recycling the same ones, and you steal one who's origin is so closely tied to Bruce and waste it here. That HQ movie wastes another. There are penty of B-teamers to go around.

OT: How is there no article yet about Snyder's vero activity today. Apparently it's a bombshell that WW was supposed to kill Steppenwolf. (eyeroll)
