Stranger Things star David Harbour is set to be voicing the obscure character Frankenstein in the Creature Commandos animated TV series for the newly-rebooted DCU. All seven-episodes written by co-CEO James Gunn.

While not much regarding the DC project has been released to the public, Harbour spoke a bit about his character during an interview with Collider (full Interview here) while promoting his newest film, Grand Turismo [The interview was held before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strike].

Yeah, we recorded a bunch of stuff, and I mean, not only do I get to play in the DC universe, but I also get to play, like, the James Gunn DC universe; which is a whole new, exciting thing. I didn't know what it was when it was sent to me -- I met with James and he sort of laid out a lot of stuff, it's really exciting; he considers it some of the best stuff he's ever written; it's hilarious, and the character's great. I think you know it's been announced that it's Frankenstein, and it’s a very colorful, terrific character.”

Not only does Harbour give a little insight on James Gunn's take on Frankenstein for Creature Commandos, but supposedly Gunn also helms this project which he solely wrote all the episodes for, as, "the best thing he has ever written."

Gunn has outstood himself with his contributions, both contained in the Marvel, and DC universe, so we should be in for a treat if he pats himself on the back with his work on Creature Commandos.

It seems Harbour's experience voicing Frankenstein, and working with Gunn in general has been nothing short of a fun time, and we are very excited to witness the final product.

Creature Commandos will be released on the streaming service Max in 2024.

Creature Commandos is an upcoming American adult animated television series based on DC Comics featuring the team Creature Commandos. Produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, it will be the first television series in the DC Universe (DCU). It focuses on a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller. All seven episodes were written by James Gunn.

Frank Grillo stars as Rick Flag Sr. in the series, alongside Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee

What Gunn actually meant

"It's really some of the weakest stuff I have written but I was on a deadline and had to get this out of the way so I could work on Superman. It's a cartoon anyway so who really cares all that much"

@Goldboink - how’d you get all of that from “It’s the best thing he’s ever written”?

It's the simple opposite of what he said filtered through a cynical lense.

@Goldboink - Where were you when he was saying The Flash was the greatest comic book movie of all time?

Maybe James Gunn thought he was heading up the Cartoon Network when he came up with this idea.

I loved the Weird War Tales shit in the early 80s - truly WTF whackadoo DC shit right up there with 'Gorillas sell comics...turn the goddamn JLA/JSA/Teen Titans/everyone into gorillas!' or 'Dinosaurs sell comics...have every book put a T-Rex on the cover at some point'

So I don't automatically hate this - but it is a crazy project for sure.

Fine. Let me be the first to say it.

It looks like the hulk.

@Lokiwasright - Kirby based his Hulk on Frankenstein.

What if Gunn was like, “This isn’t even the top five things I’ve written.”

'Creature Commandos' is the best thing James Gunn has ever written like 'The Flash' was the best superhero movie ever made?

@markcassidy thanks for including the interview took place before the strike. It’s small, but it matters

I’m open to watching this but I already am missing the Snyderverse as I liked the contrast between DC and Marvel movies. I’m not ready for Gunn’s reboot to make the DCU like Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad. It’s not that I don’t like those movies it’s that I can’t picture a serious DCUniverse under Gunn’s direction… and I’m aware people will disagree but I’d rather Nolan give us some DC movies again than Gunn’s comedic style.

@slickrickdesigns - I wish Matt Reeves was more open to taking the reigns of the new DC universe. But I understand his decision to focus on just the Batman side of things and keeping his world separate, especially with how shitty WB is as a studio
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 8/9/2023, 4:27 AM
@JFerguson - Matt Reeves was basically already doing the work that Zaslav wanted.
He successfully rebooted Batman and was overseeing a TV spin-off that he wasn't writing or directing while also flirting with the idea of a Superman movie set in the same universe. If they just said "Do what you're doing but faster and with an eye to a Justice League movie" then DC would be cookin.

So the guy who said the flash was the best superhero movie ever made says this is the best stuff he's ever written and hope we buy. OK.

@braunermegda - I love everything he’s done but he’s not for everyone. His stories have “heart” maybe it’s a bit much at time. Dude knows his comics though. I’ve been a huge fan of his since Super

Hopefully this means we will get to see a live action Frankenstein and open up more of the supernatural side of DC with S.H.A.D.E
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 8/9/2023, 7:51 AM
@GreenAerrow - apparently all these actors will be bringing a live action version of their character to screen... at some point... if the DCU even gets that far... it may be dead if Superman is a flop
GreenAerrow
GreenAerrow - 8/11/2023, 8:04 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - yeah I saw that but like you said we don’t even know if it will get that far. I mean it can’t get worse than it’s been right? Right?
