LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Producers Talk About The Show's Tone & Anthology Format

The CW's Legends Of Tomorrow looks set to have a big impact on the DC TV universe - even before it airs! The producers recently opened up about the spin-off's tone, and revealed that it will be an anthology series in the style of American Horror Story. Read on for more...

Though it's not due to debut until early 2016, we've heard plenty of interesting details about Legends Of Tomorrow so far. But where does The CW's latest superhero spin-off fit in comparison to the darker tone of Arrow and the more light-hearted world of The Flash"Ours will definitely be a little closer to [The Flash]," showrunner Phil Klemmer revealed, "It’s more like a caper, because it’s sort of like ‘Ocean’s 11′, where you have a team of misfits, a dirty dozen, and they’ve been sent on essentially a suicide mission." It seems it won't be all smiles though, as Klemmer teased a few darker moments along the way. "At a certain point, we will have darkness emerge and characters will betray one another and be tempted by the dark side. And others might not make it along for the full trip. And others might be lost in weird time periods.”

Unlike its sister shows, Legends Of Tomorrow will apparently possess a more unique storytelling format. “It’s an anthology show," Klemmer claimed, "This is not designed to go forever. This season is meant to be standalone." It's easy to see the appeal of this. Such shows are very popular at the moment - with the likes of True Detective and Fargo garnering widespread acclaim. While the DC TV spin-off may not be quite as self-contained as True Detective, viewers can hopefully still look forward to a similar vein of "tightly serialized" storytelling.

Additionally, this anthology format will have a big impact on future seasons as well.  "
The way we think of it is each arc, each season is its own separate movie," added EP Marc Guggenheim, "What we want to do is have each separate movie have its own identity. So almost to the point where each season was telling one big story that you could sort of subtitle, like the way you do subtitle American Horror Story, if that makes sense."

This seems to suggest that (were Legends Of Tomorrow successful enough to warrant a renewal) a second season would focus on a different villain, story and maybe even new heroes altogether! It's a significant depature from the kind of superhero shows we've seen so far, but it's also an interesting experiment. If things go to plan, we could be seeing all kinds of characters from DC Comics featured on Legends Of Tomorrow - potentially for years to come. What do you think of these developments? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Legends Of Tomorrow will premiere on The CW during early 2016.

As long as it features Felicity as the main character, I'm happy.

I remember back in season 1 when everyone was asking for more Felicity.

Damn the fans.

I'm gonna give this one a chance because of Captain Cold and Heatwave, since I loved them on Flash. I don't have real high hopes though, as Routh and Lotz give me headaches when they're on screen.

Ok sounds great. Was on board since beginning.

But Arrow S3 has given rise to some skepticism.

Soooo, this show will have no consequences on the Flash, super girl or Arrow??
Is that what they're getting at?

I hope this has a shorter episode run as well. It's much easier to follow a show with less filler episodes.

Good approach, this means no filler episode BS but good linear storytelling. But I do wonder what story will be for season 2 and the title Legends of Tomorrow will fit to that story?

I see this as DC/CW's response to the success of Marvel/Netflix's Daredevil.

"The way we think of it is each arc, each season is its own separate movie," added EP Marc Guggenheim, "What we want to do is have each separate movie have its own identity."

As visual effects become more affordable on TV, and these developers stick to characters that don't require an abundance of them. I believe television is the best home for the comic book genre.

@ManCalledSting

It's almost noon. I'm on my third jug of maple-y goodness. Still doesn't change anything. And I hate that damn Super Troopers movie. Wish they'd just make Potfest like they promised!

Judging by that description this was definitely meant to be a Suicide Squad show before WB made them changed because of the movie.

"Felicity is the center of the universe"

Lol!

I used to love felicity in season 1 but in season 3 she was so [frick]ing annoying. The whole Olicity thing is donkey poop.

How'd antman get on the arrow?

This whole "shared universe" is getting out of hand.

I've just started Arrow and I've really enjoyed it so far! It does get a bit soap-ish but i'm pleasantly surprised! I was blown away by how much I liked the Flash so I decided to give Arrow a shot!

@echoverthevoice - Nice. I think a lot of people forget how solid Season 1 & 2 of Arrow were amidst all this hate. I personally really enjoyed them, and at the time they were the best CBTV shows we had. Obviously now we've got Daredevil and The Flash, and Season 3 of Arrow is far from decent, but that's no reason not to enjoy it's early seasons.

I like Felicity. Arrow would be boring without her. I do wish she would stop by Central City more often though. It would be cool if they could turn her into a Firestorm villain somehow, just to bring her back to her roots.
