DC Studios Boss James Gunn Says He'd "Of Course" Like To Work With THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin

DC Studios co-CEO and SUPERMAN helmer James Gunn has confirmed he'd be open to working with The Flash star Grant Gustin after the actor recently expressed a desire to play the new DCU's Barry Allen...

Grant Gustin had a lengthy stint playing the Arrowverse's Fastest Man Alive in The Flash, and the show reached its natural conclusion with a truncated ninth season last year.

The actor has since moved on to other projects and recently made his Broadway debut in Water For Elephants. During a recent signing, Gustin was asked if he'd play Barry Allen again if DC Studios came calling, to which he said, "Yeah, if James Gunn asked me to play The Flash, I would do it again. I trust James Gunn."

Plans for the character are somewhat unclear; despite the controversies surrounding Ezra Millar, Warner Bros. Discovery and Gunn gave the actor and last year's The Flash movie their full backing. The SUPERMAN director even went so far as to declare it "one of the greatest superhero movies ever made."

Those words came back to haunt the filmmaker amid negative reviews, a so-so response from fans, and a dismal haul at the global box office. At this stage, fans would welcome Gustin back to the role, though we'd guess the Scarlet Speedster will be sidelined for the next several years.

Responding to a fan on Threads who pleaded with him to cast Gustin as the DCU's Flash because his "talent is going to waste," Gunn responded by saying, "Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project."

"But of course I’d love to work with him at some point," he concluded.

If and when DC Studios chooses to reintroduce The Flash, we'd assume it will involve a completely fresh start and a new actor (heck, it might be better to just head down the Wally West route, skipping Barry altogether).

It's been nearly a year since Gustin marked his departure from the DC TV series when he took to Instagram to say, "I said goodbye to The Flash and my Flash family on Saturday. Very special day, with moments I will cherish for the rest of my life. My family got to see my last shot as The Flash - that’s something I could’ve never imagined nearly 10 years ago when I started this journey."

"I got a chance to thank the crew, who have worked longer hours than anyone can imagine and are the reason we were able to accomplish 184 episodes of The Flash. More than anything I’ll miss chatting and laughing in between takes (and sometimes during takes) with so many of them. Regardless of how challenging this journey was at times, I know I laughed every single day at work for the last 9+ years.”

"Honored to have had the chance to play this iconic character," the actor concluded. "I gave it absolutely everything I had. That’s all for now."

Perhaps "for now" should have been taken literally! After all, say what you will about The Flash, but Gustin was infinitely better as this superhero than what we saw from Miller across multiple big screen projects.

Kidding aside (somewhat) , he could be a good younger Jay Garrick imo.

Did they expect Gunn to say No I hate that actor? They should ask him about Jared Leto lol

@xfactor - Gustin will be brainiac. or Toyman. Or credited as random stranger 4 who dodges a car coming at him.

I would love that but just like the rest of the JL I think it's better if someone else gets a shot. Pretty much anyone would be an upgrade over Miller.

@MCUKnight11 - I wonder if they go with Barry or Wally though

It would be a nice way to distinguish from the previous live action versions by having it be Wally.
MCUKnight11
MCUKnight11 - 3/7/2024, 12:44 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I say do both and Garrick. If Hal and John can coexist, so can they. That way, both the JL and Titans have a speedster.

@MCUKnight11 - true I guess

Depends on how many heroes are already established in this universe and for how long.

@MCUKnight11 @TheVisionary - with Batman already getting Damian as Robin, I'm expecting that atleast Grayson is around. And if Grayson is around, I wouldn't be surprised if the first Titans team (including Wally) is already around

@bkmeijer1 - @TheVisionary is a coward who blocks all people who might slightly disagree with him.
He should get the b-balls to unblock and actually have an intelligent conversation with other users on this site. Some of us can civil disagreements.

Sometimes I do wonder who blocked. I know I blocked quite a few users, so logging out is definitely gonna show me a lot more commenters.

@bkmeijer1 - wally fits gunn better plus he is friends with rosembaum so i feel he would honour that. Plus, he is definitely influenced by the animated series. I could see jack quaid or cameron monagham as wally given they seem to be looking at people in their late 20s early 30s for the main squad.

And speaking of Rosenbaum, I think it'd be funny if we get that moment where Lex learns Flash's secret identity.

Bring in Grant. It should've been him in the 1st place. They would've beaten the D+ tv to film nonsense with an already established universe.

He’d love to “work” with him at some point.
Well Grant, Hope you’re ready to be a cameo or background character that has nothing to do with the flash.

The missed opportunity was having Gustin instead of Miller in the DCU. I doubt Gustin will get a chance to wear the suit again.

Also , an out of the box choice but I would be down for him as Kite Man too…

The Flash showed that only died Grant have good dramatic chops but also comedic aswell so leaning into that side of him could be fun!!.

I wouldn't be opposed to it. The CW shows are mostly subpar, but he was good casting. Luckily Snyder wasn't in charge of those as well lol

Zack Snyder says "more people probably saw ‘Rebel Moon’ than saw ‘Barbie’ in the theater, right?”
"Say right now it's almost at 90 million views, right? 80 to 90 million accounts turned it on, give or take. [Netflix] assumes two viewers per screening. That’s like 160,000,000 people supposedly watching based on that math. 160,000,000 people at $10 a ticket would be…That’s $1.6 billion...That’s how crazy Netflix is. That’s the distribution model they’ve set up...You could turn it on your phone right now and watch it right here if you wanted. This model, this machine they’ve built is really something else."

I'd take Grant over Ezra as another Flash for a Crisis movie. Austin Butler my pick for DCU Flash.

Steel86

@TheVisionary25 - Thats a really good pick. But imo Arrow is more of a Hawkeye type character in the way of I'd have him in films teaming up and in JL movies but not a solo film. And I think Austin is on the brink of being the next really big star.
Did you see Dune 2?

Considering this universe is already starting with holdovers from an old universe, I 100% believe Gunn has some for of Crisis in mind down the line. In that situation you 100% have Grants Flash show up
Steel86
Steel86 - 3/7/2024, 2:02 PM
@Twenty23Three - Personally I'd kill Ezra off pretty quickly and have Grant and whoever Gunn's DCU Flash will be carrying the load for the rest of the film. Now if you use Grant do you add the TV shows in with the movies to really Crisis it up or just use him and stick to the movies?
