In the coming weeks, Kevin Smith will make his return to DC TV's
Arrowverse with his upcoming episode of
The Flash. It'll be episode seventeen of the show's fourth season, entitled "Null & Annoyed". This will be Smith's sixth time at the helm of an episode within The CW's
Arrowverse, having already directed three episodes of
Supergirl and two of
The Flash.
During a recent episode of his podcast,
Fatman on Batman, Smith discussed his work on the upcoming episode.
I was working on Flash for the last month. It was fun, we had a really nice time. It’s a good, funny episode. People are going to see it and be like ‘You f*cking jumped the shark with this.’ But it’s very funny. There’s some witty sh*t, and there’s some visual jokes.
While specific plot details are currently a mystery, there are a couple minor tidbits that we're already clued in on. The antagonist of the episode will be a gender-swapped iteration of the DC Comics character, Null. She has been described as: "An accomplished jewel thief who has escaped capture for a long time. Has the ability to manipulate gravity. Sassy, but dangerous." The episode will also feature the return of Danny Trejo as, interdimensional bounty hunter, Josh (Breacher).
Smith also detailed how the episode helped him feel more confident in his ability to direct, something which many fans of the show are already confident in as his episodes have been pretty great thus far:
I was delighted at how, it’s my third time doing a Flash, and I hadn’t done one in a while. The last one I did was the Killer Frost episode last season. So it was almost a good over a year in between episodes that I did. I always talk about ‘I don’t know how to direct! I’m a f*cking idiot!’ But I do know how to direct, I know how to do this.
And I got us out early and sh*t like that on some nights. Not because I’m good, just because I can put a scene together in my head where I’m like ‘We’ve got that, that, that, that, that.’ Sometimes, they get directors in that do a lot of coverage, cover everything to death, use every lens in the kit. I’m like ‘One lens, ten minutes, let’s go. We’re done.’ So I was able to move things along, get people home early, things like that. We had a good few weeks. And it’s a pretty fun episode.
"Null & Annoyed" does not currently have an official release date. It is preceded by the upcoming episode "Run, Iris, Run" which will premiere tomorrow on The CW. Are you looking forward to Smith's episode? What do you think about his prior episodes of The Flash?
