Last week, The Flash finally ended its run on The CW after 9 seasons. Despite the fact the Arrowverse's time has also ended, the show wrapped up on a positive note with Barry Allen continuing to protect Central City as its Scarlet Speedster...after gifting his powers to a few other potential heroes.
Now, showrunner Eric Wallace has revealed an alternate idea he had for The Flash's final episode which might have played out with an extra season or two.
"I got the emotional heart of it, but because there was no season 10, there was just no time to set it up," he tells Entertainment Weekly. "The ending that I did have in mind had the Negative Forces involved. We didn't get it quite as I wanted but the Negative Forces storyline would've been far, far bigger."
While he declined to reveal any additional details, the often confounding mythology surrounding the Negative Speed Force this series has introduced isn't likely to be something many fans will mourn missing more of.
In the same interview, Superman & Lois showrunner, and former The Flash boss, Todd Helbing also revealed his ideas for a different ending.
"I always thought that it was going to end with the newspaper: 'Flash vanishes in crisis,'" Helbing admits. "Obviously, once Crisis happened, can't do that anymore."
"And I had a similar thought to Barry becoming the lightning that struck him, where he gets caught in the future and the only way to protect him from Reverse-Flash is to basically create himself. I thought that would've been a cool ending."
That would have been fun to see and mirrors Grant Gustin's desire to have ended The Flash with the Fastest Man Alive's heroic sacrifice. The conclusion we got was by no means bad, though, and seems to have made most viewers of the show happy.
