New TITANS Pilot Details Revealed And It Sounds Like It Will Be Even Darker Than BATMAN v SUPERMAN - SPOILERS

While all the signs are pointing to the DC Films Universe moving away from the dark tone which was established by movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, it looks like the DC Universe streaming service will be embracing that in a big way. An early, spoiler-laden review for Titans has popped up online this weekend and, well, there's lots here to talk about before it premieres.

As well as Robin's relationship with Batman, we learn more about characters like Raven and Starfire, not to mention some big changes to Dick Grayson and some big hints about the show's villains.

To check out a breakdown of the show's pilot episode, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button. There's nothing here which will outright ruin things for you but these details give us a better idea
about what to expect. So, take a look and then let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

It's R-Rated And Dark In Tone

While the Teen Titans have typically been portrayed in quite a light and comedic fashion, Titans is anything but. Apparently, there are multiple F-Bombs and S-Bombs, while the action is described as being seriously brutal with snapping bones, blood, and, well, some people even get mangled!

It's not quite as adult in tone as Jessica Jones but it is considerably darker than anything else DC Entertainment has produced for television. However, before you go expecting a very grounded take on these characters, it's said that Titans doesn't shy away from embracing the comic book roots of these characters and "it doesn't ever really aim to be realistic." Sounds good so far, right? Keep reading...

Introducing The Heroes

It's said that the pilot puts the spotlight on three heroes: Robin, Raven, and Starfire. However, things kick off with a flashback as we pay a visit to The Flying Graysons and the night Dick Grayson's parents were killed. We also get a taste of Raven's "unstable psyche and untapped power." It sounds like she has a deeply disturbed and demonic individual residing inside her and everyone is aware of how strange she is. We see that she's bullied in school and it sounds like that will play a big role in her arc.

It's also said that her introduction leads to the appearance of a mysterious hitman known as The Acolyte. Not much is revealed about what he's up to but he "prompts some change within Rachel’s life that launch the entire show into motion." Needless to say, fans are sure to have some theories!

Robin Hates Batman

When we meet Dick Grayson, he's left Gotham City and is now based in San Francisco. He hated the Caped Crusader for reasons which aren't elaborated on but it sounds like he's afraid of becoming like Bruce Wayne. Surprisingly, this version of the character is working as a police detective but he doesn't play well with others and has shut himself off with the world after working with the Dark Knight.

Why he hasn't ditched the Robin persona to become Nightwing isn't clear but that could be something which happens over the course of the season, especially as we know Jason Todd will be showing up.

What's The Deal With Starfire?

There's been a lot of controversy surrounding set photos showing Starfire's rather unique look but it turns out that there's an explanation for that. The reason she looks like she's stepped out of the 1970s is because she attended a disco party shortly before getting in a car crash while being chased down by some armed goons. Her mission also looks set to intertwine with the other Teen Titans members.

It's said that she can speak multiple languages and has a number of passports. Her powers, meanwhile, are portrayed very similarly to her comic book counterpart which is bound to please many fans.

How Things Wrap Up

Apparently, the end of the pilot features some huge surprises and what the site describes as, "The absolute greatest, the most jaw-dropping moment of the pilot happens here, and it’s so good." That's presumably referring to some sort of big reveal about who the show's lead villain will be but it seems we'll have to wait and see. The reviewer's overall impression seems to be very good so it doesn't sound like the show is going to disappoint when it hits the DC Universe streaming service later this year.

Anything Batman related should be dark

@Imfunnyhow - I agree. When you add Raven you gotta go pretty dark too. Anyone who has a demon attached to them is not a light fluffy character.

The problem is that there's risk of a one-dimensional hero universe. We can't have a dark Batman, dark Superman, dark Cyborg, dark Robin, dark Beastboy, dark Aquaman etc.

It also shows those in charge don't understand the character dynamics and balance.

For example: Batman disappearing when people turn around is a cool signature move...so what does WB/DC do? They make ALL of the Justice League do it...expect for Flash. Even clunky Cyborg. Now it's not so much his thing but just something they all do.

Everyone can't be jaded, dark and mysterious. That isn't some brush you use to define an entire brand. Having so many dark characters diminishes Batman as a whole because all characters start to behave in the same way and the tone falls flat. Without balance the entire experience will feel like a black hole.

I'm still waiting for Superman-of-steel to actually become Superman and stop whining about the whole idea of being a hero.

I like everything I heard except that it will be heavy R Rated. Unneeded really. If it is true I wonder if it something executive producer Akiva Goldsman demanded and if Berlanti and others allowed. The latter has found success in DC without making it so gritty, more when DCEU and DC itself has been trying to be less like that in the overall picture.

Still interested in the whole show though.

@NinnesMBC - R rated is usually better.

ftf530 - 6/30/2018, 11:03 AM
@NinnesMBC - Other than the few comic characters like deadpool, who at their lowest rating still need to be TV-14 or something similar...

I just don't understand the whole "this rating is better" thing

I think there shouldn't be any expectation based on the rating - It should just be whatever the story that was meant to be told calls for.
Battabing
Battabing - 6/30/2018, 11:12 AM
@ftf530 -
The Marvel Netflix shows are all TV-MA, which is R+.
BullyFU
BullyFU - 6/30/2018, 12:02 PM
@Battabing - Not really. TV-MA and R are quite different. The ratings between TV and Film is quite different and if you think MA is some sort of R+, making it closer to an NC-17 rating, I suggest you read up on the ratings. The Netflix shows don't drop F bombs or have nudity, like R rated films do. Even PG-13 films are allowed to have 1 F bomb but Walking Dead has been around for 7 years before they finally allowed 1 of those, despite it maintaining an MA rating the whole time.

TV and film ratings are quite different and other than TV-14 and PG-13 being similar you can't really equate the higher ratings to that of their film/tv counterpart. MA covers A LOT of ground and if this series is MA then that's a good thing because there will be very little restriction on what they can show or say. That doesn't mean they need to overdo it though. It only makes sense for criminals to swear or for someone to be naked during a sex scene instead of clinging to a sheet because showing bare breasts to your partner would just be "weird" or something. I hope they don't go overboard with it because dark does not equal good. This isn't HBO either. Showing somethings will only help people get immersed in the world they build a little easier and it may help some with the predictability.

@BullyFU - yet... You understood his point right? Tvma and r are virtually the same.
PBIRD

Dark or Not dark does not matter. Most TV dramas that do the best are super super dark. Breaking bad, Game of the Thrones, The Following, Homeland... etc... etc... etc. Just make it GOOD. That is all we want. Good. And dont be afraid to put some budget into your special effects. I think Flash does a pretty good job at that, keep that standard.

Something marvel is about 100 miles behind on (except Ghost Rider... he was legit boss).
ftf530
ftf530 - 6/30/2018, 11:07 AM
@PBIRD - I think part of the reason they were able to do that is because

1) being the only major network show running in primetime of the marvel line-up, they always were working with more money than the netflix shows, which were only possibly due to low cgi budgets and a huge pact with NYC.

2) I really think the only reason we've gotten SO MANY netflix shows is because they're able to be made so cheaply... I think the netflix budget for them is normal, and that their tax incentives pay for most of the effects, if not all the CGI

3) stuff funded otherwise seems to have bigger CG budgets - based on what I've seen of Cloak and Dagger and Runaways (pace issues aside, runaways did some colorful stuff that Netflix has never tried to attempt as far as the marvel shows - or effect drive shows - go).

@PBIRD - that being said, season 4 of AOS is still my second favorite season of tv from Marvel TV

only beaten by s1 of Legion and followed up with s2 of legion.

I'm a broken record by now, but everyone needs to watch legion s1. Wow.

DaHyro

Man... I wish DC would let the movie characters appear on the TV shows. They stopped Deadshot, Waller, and Deathstroke from appearing on Arrow and I assume they won't let Cyborg on this.

Imagine how cool it would be if we had the five Titans in live action?

Given that Cy is gonna be in Doom Patrol and for all we know has been casted already, I wouldn't be surprise if he shows up in the final episode of the season, only to become a mainstay on the team in season two.
OptionFour
OptionFour - 6/30/2018, 11:51 AM
@DaHyro - They've already started to do that. They're allowing Cyborg on Doom Patrol and Superman has been used a fair bit in Supergirl now. I think we've already seen a reversal of their position on that.

naterator - 6/30/2018, 12:22 PM
@DaHyro - i think it would be amazing if the dceu and this attribute tv universe they are making (hopefully)one day cross over for an infinite crisis scenario. ..allowing cinematic characters and small screen characters to appear on both sides. That would set DC apart from the Marvel formula for sure.

I don't know why people are complaining about the R-Rating. The OG Teen Titans comics dealt with some pretty adult themes. This is actually a pretty good fit for Titans.
